Where Alcohol Is Allowed

You’ll need to use plastic or aluminum. Cans, plastic cups, and insulated tumblers all work. No glass, anywhere on the sand.
Private beach areas tied to hotels, resorts, and vacation rentals run on their own house rules. Many beachfront properties let guests drink on their designated sections, but policies vary. Ask before you haul a cooler down.
Where Alcohol Is Prohibited
Two categories of beach near Destin ban alcohol on the sand entirely: Okaloosa County parks and Florida state parks. Confusing one of these for a general public beach is what gets visitors ticketed.
Okaloosa County Park Beaches
Okaloosa County Ordinance Chapter 16, Section 16-43 prohibits alcohol at county parks and recreational areas in unincorporated parts of the county. Several of the busiest beach access points in the Destin area fall under this: James Lee Park, Newman C. Brackin Park, and the area around the Island Pier. If you’re walking onto the sand through one of those parks, treat alcohol as off-limits.
There’s one narrow exception. Section 16-43(n) says the prohibition does not apply within “appropriately licensed establishments at the Island Pier, Newman C. Brackin Park and James Lee Park and any other establishment in a county park as approved by the board of county commissioners.”2Okaloosa County. Henderson Beach State Park
Henderson Beach State Park bans alcohol entirely. Florida state parks prohibit alcoholic beverages, and rangers enforce the rule at the entrance. There’s no warning until after you’ve paid the admission fee, so leave anything alcoholic in your car before you pull up to the gate.
What Happens if You Get Caught
Drinking in a county park where it’s banned is a county ordinance violation. That charge can apply on any beach, including the ones where drinking is otherwise legal. Beach patrol picks up during spring break and summer weekends. Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies work the sand and water in peak season, so getting spotted isn’t a remote risk.
The Glass Container Rule
Glass containers of any kind are prohibited on every Destin and Okaloosa County beach, regardless of whether alcohol is allowed where you’re sitting.1City of Destin. Broken glass mixed into white sand is nearly invisible and a real injury risk for anyone walking barefoot.
