Can You Get a Copy of Your Car Title Online in Georgia?

You cannot complete a duplicate car title application entirely online in Georgia, but the state’s DRIVES e-Services portal lets you pre-fill the paperwork before finishing the request in person or by mail. The replacement fee is $8, and most applicants receive the new title in the mail within 7 to 10 business days after processing.¹ If you need it the same day, the Georgia Department of Revenue office in Atlanta can print one at the counter.

What You Can Actually Do Online

The DRIVES portal offers a pre-application for title and registration. You fill in your information ahead of time, then bring the confirmation to your county tag office to finish the transaction.² It saves time at the counter but does not replace the visit.

You can also check the status of a title through the portal, which is useful once your application is in the system. The final step, though, requires either an in-person visit or a mailed submission.

Who Can Request a Duplicate Title

Only the registered owner can apply. If the vehicle is titled to more than one owner, every listed owner must sign the application.³

If you cannot go in yourself, someone else can act for you using Georgia Form T-8, the Limited Power of Attorney for motor vehicle transactions. The form must be an original, signed and notarized, and the attorney-in-fact has to bring a copy of their driver’s license or state ID. Form T-8 expires 12 months from the date it was signed.⁴

What You Need to Apply

The core document is Georgia Form MV-1, the Title/Tag Application. You can download it from the Department of Revenue website, pick one up at your county tag office, or start it through the DRIVES pre-application.⁵

To complete the form, have these on hand:

Your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), copied from the vehicle or your registration
Your current license plate number
Your full legal name and current address, matching your Georgia driver’s license or state ID
Your driver’s license number

Submit the form to the tag office in the county where you live, or to the Department of Revenue directly where applicable.⁶

Three Ways to Submit

Same-Day at the DOR Office in Atlanta

If you need the title immediately, the Department of Revenue office in Atlanta issues replacements the same day. Your vehicle record has to be current, with no outstanding registration fees, insurance lapses, or unresolved lien issues. The fee is still $8. This is the only route that lets you walk out with a title in hand.

In Person at Your County Tag Office

Bring your completed Form MV-1, a valid Georgia driver’s license or state ID, any supporting documents, and payment. Staff can review everything on the spot, which prevents the back-and-forth that mailed applications sometimes cause. Once the county processes it, the Department of Revenue prints and mails the title, and it usually arrives within 7 to 10 business days.³

By Mail

Mail your completed Form MV-1, supporting documents, and a check or money order to the Georgia Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicle Division, P.O. Box 740381, Atlanta, GA 30374. Between transit time in both directions and processing at the DOR, plan on several weeks.

Fees and Add-On Charges

The replacement title itself costs $8, and the new title carries a brand indicating it’s a duplicate.¹ In person, you can pay by cash, check, or card. By mail, use a check or money order.

Other charges can appear if your vehicle record isn’t clean. A lapsed insurance penalty runs $25 for failure to maintain continuous liability coverage. If you missed your county’s registration renewal window, the late penalty is 10% of the ad valorem tax due plus 25% of the license plate fees, with a minimum $5 ad valorem penalty.¹ These have to be cleared before or during your duplicate title application.

If There’s a Lien on the Vehicle

You can still request a duplicate when a loan is active, but the replacement title goes to the lienholder rather than to you. If you need the physical title while the lien is in place, talk to the lender first.

If the loan has been paid off but the lien was still on the old title, you’ll need a completed and signed Form T-4 (Lien or Security Interest Release) from the lienholder, submitted with your MV-1. The county tag office may verify the T-4 before accepting the application, so make sure the lienholder fills it in completely.⁷

Special Situations

Title Lost Before a Sale Was Completed

If you bought a vehicle but the seller lost the title before signing it over, the previous owner has to apply for the replacement. Once they get it, both parties then complete the title reassignment on the back of the new title.³ There is no shortcut. If the seller is uncooperative or unreachable, this becomes very difficult, which is the reason not to hand over money without a signed title.

Inheriting a Vehicle

When the registered owner has died, the process involves more paperwork. You need Form MV-1 and the original title in the deceased person’s name with any liens released. The title fee for an estate transfer is $18 rather than $8.⁸

Georgia accepts any of the following as inheritance documentation:

A certified copy of Letters Testamentary from the probate court, if the estate has been probated
A certified copy of a Year’s Support order, if the surviving spouse or minor children obtained one
An Affidavit of Inheritance (Form T-20) with a certified copy of the death certificate, if the estate was not probated; if there is only one heir, a copy of the court’s “No Administration Necessary” order can substitute for the T-20

If the original title is not available, a replacement cannot be issued in a deceased person’s name. Whoever holds the title has to request a duplicate and assign it to the estate before the heir can take ownership.⁸
