Can You Get a Duplicate Car Title Online in Louisiana?

You cannot get a duplicate car title online in Louisiana. The state’s Express Lane portal handles several motor vehicle transactions over the web, but duplicate title requests are not among them. If your original title was lost, damaged, or never arrived in the mail, you’ll apply through the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) either in person or by mail using Form DPSMV 1799.

Mail is the slowest route. The OMV doesn’t publish a guaranteed turnaround, and several weeks is typical. Some applicants report waits of eight weeks or longer.

You can bring the completed DPSMV 1799, a valid photo ID, and payment to any OMV field office or authorized public tag agent.6Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. When the Owner Has Died

If the registered owner has passed away, a duplicate title in their name is off the table unless the duplicate title affidavit was already notarized before the death. Instead, Louisiana Revised Statute 32:707.1 provides a transfer process for a deceased person’s vehicle. Each person with an ownership interest signs an affidavit stating their relationship to the deceased, whether they know of a will, and that they’re transferring their interest to the applicant. These affidavits are submitted with the title application.

If the estate is in court-supervised succession, the executor or administrator can sign on behalf of the estate. The OMV may ask for additional documentation. For anything beyond a simple family situation, a Louisiana succession attorney can keep the application from being rejected.

Selling the Car While You Wait

You can’t legally transfer ownership of a titled vehicle in Louisiana without a properly assigned title. A bill of sale alone won’t do it. If a buyer is lined up and your original title is missing, start the duplicate process right away. Using a public tag agent with expedited processing is the realistic way to keep a private sale on schedule, since the replacement can be ready the next business day.
