You cannot get a same day ID in California. The DMV does not print permanent plastic cards in its field offices, so you leave your appointment with a temporary paper document and wait for the real card to arrive by mail. Plan on roughly four weeks if you applied in person or by mail, and about two weeks if you used a DMV kiosk for an eligible renewal.1California Department of Motor Vehicles. Processing Times
There is no expedited or rush option. Paying more will not speed it up, and no field office can produce the card on the spot.
What the Temporary Paper Document Will and Won’t Do
The paper you walk out with covers a lot of ordinary situations. It will usually get you through an age check at a store. It will often work for routine errands where someone just needs to see your name and photo.
It falls short in two places that matter.
The first is the airport. TSA does not accept a temporary driver’s license or identification document at security checkpoints.2Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint If you have a flight in the next few weeks and no passport, the temporary will not get you on the plane.
The second is private business discretion. Banks, car rental counters, notaries, and other institutions are free to refuse the temporary and insist on the plastic card. No law forces them to accept paper. If you need ID for a specific transaction on a deadline, call the business first and ask whether the temporary will be enough.
How Long the Permanent Card Really Takes
The DMV publishes two timelines:1California Department of Motor Vehicles. Processing Times
- In-office or mail application: about four weeks.
- DMV kiosk, for eligible renewals only: about two weeks.
Some people get their card faster. The DMV does not guarantee a delivery date. If 60 days pass with no card in your mailbox, check the status through the DMV’s online tool or contact the DMV directly.3California Department of Motor Vehicles. Identification Cards
If You Need Identification Before the Card Arrives
For flying, a U.S. passport or passport card is the practical workaround while you wait. TSA accepts it in place of a state ID.2Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint
California’s mobile driver’s license through the CA DMV Wallet app is not a shortcut either. To set it up, you scan your physical card into the app, which means you need the plastic card in hand first.4California DMV. CA DMV Wallet California law also still requires you to show a physical card to law enforcement during a traffic stop, so the app does not replace the card even once you have it.5California DMV. mDL Q&A
Bring the Right Documents the First Time
The fastest way to turn a four-week wait into a much longer one is to show up without the right paperwork and have to come back. The DMV requires proof of identity, your Social Security number, and California residency.3California Department of Motor Vehicles. Identification Cards
For identity, bring one original or certified document such as a U.S. birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport, or a Permanent Resident Card. The name on it has to match your current legal name. If your name changed through marriage, divorce, or a court order, bring the marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order to connect the names.
For your Social Security number, bring the card itself, a W-2, or a pay stub showing the full nine digits.
For California residency, bring two separate documents showing your name and current California address. Utility bills, rental or lease agreements, mortgage statements, and bank statements are commonly accepted. Photocopies are not accepted in any of these categories. Bring originals or certified copies.
You can start the application online through the DMV’s eDL 44 portal, upload documents ahead of time, and bring a confirmation number to the office to shorten your time at the counter.6California DMV. Apply Online for a Driver License or ID Card You still sign in person, have your thumbprint scanned, have your photo taken, and pay the $40 fee, which is nonrefundable whether or not your application is approved.7California DMV. Licensing Fees Booking an appointment through the DMV’s website cuts wait times substantially compared to walking in.
Decide on REAL ID Before You Go
Since May 7, 2025, REAL ID enforcement is active at every TSA airport checkpoint. Travelers who arrive without a REAL ID-compliant card or another federally accepted ID like a passport face delays and a $45 identity verification fee through TSA’s ConfirmID process.8Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID
A standard California ID card is marked “FEDERAL LIMITS APPLY” and will not get you through airport security on its own. A REAL ID-compliant card carries a gold bear emblem and is accepted at TSA checkpoints, federal buildings, and military installations.
Both versions cost the same $40 and are issued at the same DMV office. The REAL ID requires documents from a slightly more restrictive acceptable documents list for identity, Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency.3California Department of Motor Vehicles. Identification Cards If you ever expect to fly domestically without a passport in your pocket, choose the REAL ID while you are already at the counter. Either way, the card still arrives by mail in the same two-to-four-week window.
