You can hunt coyotes at night in Georgia year-round on private land, with no closed season, no bag limit, and no requirement to tag or report your harvest. Coyotes are classified as nongame, and they sit on the short list of species the state specifically allows to be taken after legal daylight hours. The catch is that the rules change sharply on Wildlife Management Areas, and a few equipment and setback laws can turn a legal hunt into a misdemeanor if you ignore them.
When You Can Hunt
Standard legal hunting hours in Georgia run from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. Coyotes are an exception. Along with raccoons, opossums, foxes, bobcats, feral hogs, and alligators, coyotes may be hunted at night on private land.1eRegulations. Georgia Hunting – Hunting Information The clock never stops. There is no closed season and no limit on how many you can take.2Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Non-Native and Invasive Species Info
Coyotes fall outside the game-animal categories that carry seasonal restrictions, bag limits, and harvest-record requirements under O.C.G.A. 27-1-28.3Georgia Department of Natural Resources. License You Need
Every hunter aged 16 or older needs a valid Georgia hunting license. The annual resident license costs $15; the non-resident annual license is $100.4Georgia Department of Natural Resources. If you were born on or after January 1, 1961, you must complete an approved hunter education course before you can buy that license.6Fastcase. Weapons, Lights, and Calls
Georgia places no firearm restrictions on nongame animals. O.C.G.A. 27-3-4 allows rifles, shotguns, and handguns of any caliber for taking nongame species and feral hogs, and bows and crossbows are also permitted.8Justia. Georgia Code 27-3-4 – Legal Weapons for Hunting Wildlife Generally On private land after dark you can run a centerfire rifle in whatever caliber you prefer.
Lighting is where coyotes get treated more leniently than other nighttime quarry. Hunters pursuing raccoons, opossums, foxes, or bobcats at night must carry their light on the body, on a helmet or hat, or on a belt system. Coyotes are not on that list.1eRegulations. Georgia Hunting – Hunting Information That leaves handheld spotlights, weapon-mounted lights, and scanning setups available to you. There is also no voltage cap on lights used for species that may be hunted at night. Night vision and thermal optics are not restricted for nongame hunting. Electronic calls are legal for coyotes, which matters a great deal when you are trying to bring one in after dark.9eRegulations. Bear, Turkey, Feral Hog, Alligator and Small Game
Suppressors
Suppressors are legal in three places only: on your own private property, on another person’s private property with verifiable landowner permission, or on public lands in areas specifically designated by the DNR. Using one anywhere else is a misdemeanor. If you are convicted of hunting big game out of season or at night with a suppressor-equipped firearm, your hunting privileges are suspended for three years.8Justia. Georgia Code 27-3-4 – Legal Weapons for Hunting Wildlife Generally Federal NFA rules still govern ownership.
Permission on Private Land
Private land is where the night-hunting framework works best, but you need the landowner’s permission. Hunting on someone else’s land without consent carries a minimum $975 fine for a first offense, with higher fines and license revocation for repeat violations.10Justia. Georgia Code 27-3-1 – Requirement of Permission to Hunt on Lands of Another Entering land without authority can also be charged as criminal trespass under O.C.G.A. 16-7-21.11Justia. Georgia Code 16-7-21 – Criminal Trespass
Written permission is not required by statute, but keeping a signed note with the landowner’s name, property boundaries, and authorized dates settles any question a game warden might raise. That matters more at night, when a 2 a.m. presence on rural property will naturally invite scrutiny.
Wildlife Management Areas Are Different
This is where hunters get into trouble. The general WMA rule prohibits night hunting except for raccoon, fox, opossum, and bobcat during open dates. You may take a coyote at night on a WMA only incidentally, while already legally hunting one of those four species.12Georgia Secretary of State. Georgia Administrative Rules and Regulations – Subject 391-4-2 Hunting Regulations Going to a WMA solely to night-hunt coyotes is not allowed.
The weapon rule tightens too. Centerfire rifles are prohibited for any nighttime hunting on WMAs, state parks, voluntary public access areas, and federal lands unless a specific regulation says otherwise.12Georgia Secretary of State. Georgia Administrative Rules and Regulations – Subject 391-4-2 Hunting Regulations If a coyote shows up while you are legally raccoon hunting on a WMA, you have to take it with small-game weapons: a shotgun with appropriate loads or a rimfire rifle, not the flat-shooting centerfire rig most predator hunters prefer.
WMA access also requires either a valid Georgia hunting or fishing license or a Georgia Lands Pass for anyone 16 or older.13Legal Information Institute. Georgia Comp. R. and Regs. R. 391-4-9-.06 – Georgia WRD Lands Pass Shooting from a motor vehicle on a WMA is illegal unless you hold a disability accommodation permit and are on a designated handicapped-access road with the vehicle stationary.12Georgia Secretary of State. Georgia Administrative Rules and Regulations – Subject 391-4-2 Hunting Regulations
Setbacks and Safety Zones
Darkness magnifies the consequences of a bad shot because you cannot see what sits behind your target. Georgia makes it a misdemeanor to discharge a firearm on or within 50 yards of any public road, and there is no hunting exception.14Justia. Georgia Code 16-11-103 – Discharge of Gun or Pistol Near a Public Highway On WMAs the buffer is 600 feet from any dock, house, structure, bridge, road, boat ramp, marina, or open recreation area.12Georgia Secretary of State. Georgia Administrative Rules and Regulations – Subject 391-4-2 Hunting Regulations
There is no statewide minimum-distance law for firing near an occupied dwelling on private land outside a WMA, but counties and municipalities often set their own buffers. A quick call to the county before you set up a nighttime stand near houses is worth the time.
Handling the Carcass
Georgia classifies coyotes as a rabies vector species. Wear gloves when handling a carcass and avoid contact with saliva or blood. If a coyote has scratched or bitten a person or domestic animal, the Georgia DNR requires that you contact the county animal shelter or health department and follow their instructions for rabies testing.3Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
