Can You Hunt on Sunday in North Carolina: Hours, Archery, Dogs

Sunday hunting in North Carolina is legal with firearms on private land and on most public game lands, but you have to work around a three-hour mid-morning blackout, a 500-yard buffer from places of worship and residences, a ban on using dogs to chase deer, and a flat prohibition on taking migratory birds. Archery hunters get a much freer day. Everything below is how those rules actually fit together.

The 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Firearm Blackout

Hunting with a firearm on Sunday is prohibited between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.1North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 103-2 – Method of Take When Hunting on Sunday That window roughly covers church service hours and was part of the political compromise that made Sunday hunting possible in the first place. You can hunt the morning before 9:30 and the afternoon after 12:30, but you cannot carry the morning hunt through the blackout.

The only place this time restriction does not apply is a licensed controlled hunting preserve. Everywhere else, private or public, the clock is the clock.

Private Land: Permission in Writing

On private land, Sunday firearm hunting for wild animals and upland game birds is open to the landowner, the landowner’s family, and anyone carrying the landowner’s written permission.1North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 103-2 – Method of Take When Hunting on Sunday Written permission means a signed, dated document from the landowner, lessee, or their agent, dated within the past 12 months. Keep it on you. A wildlife officer can ask to see it, and that same document doubles as your defense against a trespass charge under G.S. 14-159.6 if the land is posted.2North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 14-159.6 – Trespass to Hunt, Fish, Trap

Public Game Lands: Open, but Not All of Them

Since 2021, Sunday firearm hunting has been allowed on public lands managed for hunting, subject to the same restrictions that apply on private land.1North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 103-2 – Method of Take When Hunting on Sunday The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission opened 51 state game lands and four national forests to Sunday hunting. Roughly 42 other game lands remain closed to Sunday firearm hunting.

Before you drive out, check the NCWRC’s current regulations or the specific game land map to confirm Sunday is open where you plan to hunt. One species-specific closure to know: bear hunting on game lands in the Coastal Bear Management Unit is prohibited on Sundays.

Buffer From Places of Worship and Residences

You cannot hunt with a firearm on Sunday within 500 yards of a place of religious worship or any accessory structure connected to it.1North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 103-2 – Method of Take When Hunting on Sunday That’s about a quarter mile in every direction, and in thick woods a small church can sit inside your hunting area without you realizing it. Scout for buildings before Sunday, not during.

On private land, the NCWRC also enforces a 500-yard buffer from any residence not owned by the person doing the hunting.3NC Wildlife. FAQ – The Outdoor Heritage Act

No Running Deer With Dogs on Sunday

Taking deer with a firearm when the deer are run or chased by dogs is prohibited on Sunday, on both private and public land.1North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 103-2 – Method of Take When Hunting on Sunday Dogs are still allowed for other kinds of hunting on Sundays; the ban is specific to deer.

Archery Is Treated Differently

The Sunday statute governs the use of firearms. Its restrictions, including the 9:30 to 12:30 blackout and the 500-yard worship buffer, are framed around firearm hunting. Bow and crossbow hunters are not subject to those firearm-specific limits and have the full Sunday available. You still need landowner permission on private land, and you still have to follow every other NCWRC season, bag, and method rule that applies to your quarry.

Migratory Birds: Not on Sunday

Migratory game birds are the hardest no in the Sunday framework. Hunting them on Sunday is prohibited unless the NCWRC specifically authorizes it, and as of the 2025-26 season, no such authorization is in place.1North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 103-2 – Method of Take When Hunting on Sunday The NCWRC’s published migratory bird regulations confirm no migratory game birds may be taken by any method on Sundays.4NC Wildlife. 2025-26 Migratory Bird Seasons

For duck and goose hunters this matters even on days when the game land is open and your federal stamps are in order. Waterfowl stay off-limits. The federal frameworks recognize North Carolina’s statewide Sunday prohibition and close all Sundays to migratory game bird take in the state, with a partial offset: the state’s season length can be extended by one day for each Sunday that falls within the regular hunting season.5Federal Register. Penalties

Violating the Sunday hunting statute or related NCWRC rules is a Class 3 misdemeanor.1North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 103-2 – Method of Take When Hunting on Sunday For a first-time offender under North Carolina’s structured sentencing, that generally means a fine rather than jail. Hunting the blackout window, firing within the worship buffer, or taking a migratory bird on Sunday all land in that category.

Trespass is a separate and heavier charge. Going onto posted private land to hunt without written permission is a Class 2 misdemeanor under G.S. 14-159.6, which can carry up to 60 days in jail depending on the offender’s record.2North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 14-159.6 – Trespass to Hunt, Fish, Trap If the Sunday violation involved deer, wild turkey, or bear, additional mandatory minimum fines under G.S. 113-294 can apply on top of the Sunday penalty.

The NCWRC can also suspend your hunting license, and because North Carolina is part of the Wildlife Violator Compact, a suspension here can be recognized by other member states.6North Carolina Administrative Code. North Carolina Code 15A NCAC 03O 0604 – WVC Reciprocal Recognition of Suspensions If an officer determines the violation was unintentional, they have discretion to issue a warning ticket instead of a citation.7North Carolina General Assembly. Narrow Exceptions

A few situations fall outside the Sunday restrictions entirely. Hunting on military reservations under exclusive federal jurisdiction is exempt. NCWRC-authorized field trials are exempt. Actions taken in defense of your property are permitted regardless of the day.1North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 103-2 – Method of Take When Hunting on Sunday Licensed controlled hunting preserves are exempt from the firearm time blackout, though the other Sunday rules still apply there.
