You can play the New York Lottery online, but not by buying a single ticket from the state’s website the way you’d grab one at a bodega counter. Your Two Online Options
The official New York Lottery site and app do not sell individual tickets. For online play, you’re choosing between the state-run subscription service and a licensed courier.
The Subscription Center at mynylottery.org is run by the New York Lottery itself. You prepay for a set number of drawings in Lotto, Mega Millions, or Millionaire for Life, and the Lottery enters your numbers automatically until the subscription runs out.
Courier services like Jackpocket and Jackpot.com are private companies licensed by the New York State Gaming Commission. A few limits worth knowing before you sign up. The Lottery does not issue refunds on active subscriptions. How Lottery Courier Services Work
Once you place an order, the courier has 24 hours during normal business hours to complete the purchase, and for draw games the ticket has to be bought at least 30 minutes before the drawing cutoff. After the purchase, the courier sends confirmation with the serial number, game details, and a watermarked image of both sides of the ticket. You have to be physically in New York State when you place the order and when you initiate payment. Couriers charge a service fee on top of the ticket price. Amounts vary by company, and some collect at deposit while others collect at checkout. If you win under $600, the courier redeems the ticket and credits your account. What the Official App Is For
The free New York Lottery app doesn’t sell tickets. It scans barcodes on retail tickets to check for winners, shows the latest winning numbers and jackpot amounts, and points you to nearby retailers. Useful for players who buy at the counter, not a workaround if you want to play from your couch.
Age and Location Requirements

You have one year from the drawing date to claim a draw-game prize in New York. Miss that window and the money is gone.
Taxes on What You Win
Lottery prizes are taxable, and withholding starts before the payout hits your account. For prizes over $5,000, the Gaming Commission withholds 24% for federal income tax up front.7Internal Revenue Service. Prizes of $600 or more get reported to the IRS and New York State on tax forms. If you don’t provide a Social Security Number, the Gaming Commission may apply backup withholding.5New York Lottery. Privacy for Winners
New York does not offer general anonymity for lottery winners. Names are public information, unlike in states such as Delaware, Kansas, or Maryland. A pending bill in the 2025–2026 session, S2613, would bar the Lottery from disclosing a winner’s name, address, or other identifying details without consent, but it has not been enacted as of early 2026.9New York State Senate.
