You can register a car online in Florida only if you are renewing an existing Florida registration. First-time registrations, including vehicles you just bought or brought in from another state, have to be handled in person at a county tax collector’s office or motor vehicle service center. If you already have a Florida plate, renewing takes a few minutes through the state’s MyDMV Portal or the MyFlorida mobile app.1Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Who Can Use the Online System
The online portal is for renewals only. If your vehicle has been titled in your name in Florida before and the registration is still in the state’s system, you’re eligible. You can choose a one-year or two-year renewal.1Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Renew or Replace Your Registration
You cannot register online if the car is new to you, new to Florida, or otherwise has never been titled here under your name. Those transactions require a VIN inspection, an original title, and documents a clerk has to verify in person. Jump down to the first-time registration section if that describes you.

What You Need Before You Start
Pull these together first:
- A way to identify yourself in the system: your Florida driver’s license number, your license plate number, or the PIN printed on the paper renewal notice the state mailed you.
- Active Florida insurance the state can verify electronically. Your policy must meet the Florida minimums of $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability.
- The birth date of the first registered owner, which the system uses to look up your record.
- No outstanding stops on your record. Unpaid tickets, fines, or other holds will block the renewal, and you have to clear them with the issuing court or agency first.
You do not need a title, a bill of sale, or any purchase paperwork to renew. Those documents only come up for first-time registrations.
Renewing Step by Step
Go to the MyDMV Portal at mydmvportal.flhsmv.gov, or open the MyFlorida app. Sign in with your identifying information, pull up your vehicle, and pick a one- or two-year renewal.
You can pay with a credit card or a checking account. The portal adds a $2.00 non-refundable convenience fee to each transaction.3Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. MyDMV Portal A credit card payment carries an additional $4.00 processing fee; a checking account payment carries a $3.75 processing fee.1Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. It’s your temporary proof of renewal until the paper documents arrive.
What It Costs
Florida’s base registration fee is tied to vehicle weight, not value. For a standard passenger car, the annual base fees are:4Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Fees
- Up to 2,499 pounds: $14.50
- 2,500 to 3,499 pounds: $22.50
- 3,500 pounds or more: $32.50
Most sedans and SUVs land in the top bracket. Your checkout total also includes other statutory items, like the license plate replacement surcharge ($2.80 a year, credited toward a $28 plate replacement every ten years), county-specific fees, and the processing fees above. A two-year renewal doubles the base fee. All in, a typical passenger car renewal runs roughly $50 to $90 per year.
When Your Decal Arrives
Your new registration certificate and validation sticker come by mail within 7 to 10 business days.1Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. If nothing arrives after about 20 calendar days, contact FLHSMV customer service or visit a local service center to request a lost-in-transit replacement. Keep your emailed confirmation in the car in the meantime. Florida requires a paper or electronic copy of your registration to be with you whenever you’re driving.
If You’re Registering a Car for the First Time
New Florida residents and anyone who just bought a car that needs to be titled in their name can’t use the online portal. You have to go in person to a county tax collector’s office or motor vehicle service center, and new residents have 10 days from establishing residency to do it.6Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. New Resident – Welcome to Florida Residency starts when you take a Florida job, enroll children in a Florida public school, register to vote in Florida, file for a homestead exemption, or live in the state for more than six consecutive months.
For a car coming from another state, bring proof of identity for every owner, proof of Florida insurance, the original out-of-state title, and a completed Application for Certificate of Title (HSMV form 82040). You’ll also need a VIN verification, which a tax collector employee, a law enforcement officer, or a licensed Florida dealer can perform.6Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. New Resident – Welcome to Florida Getting your Florida insurance in place before you officially move makes the 10-day window easier to hit.
If you bought from a Florida dealer, the dealer usually handles the title and registration paperwork. A private-party purchase is on you: bring the signed title, a bill of sale, and the same identity and insurance documents to the tax collector. Florida does not require a safety or emissions inspection for passenger vehicles.
Other Ways to Renew
If the online system won’t work for your situation, you have two other options. You can walk into any county tax collector’s office or motor vehicle service center and renew at the counter. In-person is also where you handle anything the portal can’t do, like replacing a damaged plate or correcting information on your record.
You can also renew by mail. Send your renewal notice, proof of Florida insurance, and a check or money order to the tax collector’s office listed on the notice. Mail is the slowest route, so if your birthday is close, use the portal or go in person.
