You can register a salvage-titled vehicle in Nevada, but not with the salvage title itself. The vehicle has to be repaired by a licensed shop, pass a shop inspection and a DMV inspection, and be re-titled with a permanent “Rebuilt” brand before the DMV will register it for road use.1Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. First, Confirm It’s Salvage and Not Non-Repairable
Nevada draws a hard line between the two. A salvage title can be rehabilitated into a rebuilt title and registered. A non-repairable certificate cannot: that vehicle is permanently barred from the road no matter how well it’s restored.1Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Salvage Vehicles If you’re buying a damaged vehicle to rebuild, check the paperwork before you pay. The wrong document turns a project car into a parts bin.
Get Pre-Repair Authorization if the Vehicle Is Five Model Years Old or Newer
For vehicles five model years old or newer, you must take the car to a DMV inspection station and get an Authorization for Vehicle Restoration (Form VP-209) before any repairs begin. The DMV will not title or register the vehicle without it. Vehicles six model years old or older skip this step entirely.1Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Salvage Vehicles
This is the step most people miss. Starting repairs first can force you to undo work or struggle to prove what was original to the vehicle. If your car qualifies, go to the DMV before you touch it.
Have the Repairs Done by a Licensed Shop
The work must be performed by a Nevada-registered garage, licensed body shop, or licensed rebuilder.2Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code 482-223 – Application for Title for Rebuilt, Reconstructed or Specially Constructed Vehicle Repairs must meet the standards commonly applied in the automotive repair industry. Safety equipment has specific federal rules: deployed airbags must be replaced in compliance with 49 C.F.R. § 571.208, and damaged seatbelt assemblies must be repaired or replaced to the standards in 49 C.F.R. § 571.209.3Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Salvage Title and Non-Repairable Vehicle Certificate Guide
The shop is required to keep written records of all work performed, including dates and identifying information for any parts used. Those records become part of your paperwork trail, so insist the shop documents everything, especially major components sourced from other vehicles.
Pass the Shop Inspection (Form VP-064)
Once repairs are complete, a licensed garage operator, body shop owner, or rebuilder (or their authorized employee) inspects the vehicle and completes the Certificate of Inspection/Affidavit of Vehicle Construction, Form VP-064. The inspector must certify that the work meets manufacturer standards for mechanical fitness and safety, that the vehicle has been properly repaired, and that all original safety equipment is present and operational.2Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code 482-223 – Application for Title for Rebuilt, Reconstructed or Specially Constructed Vehicle
Ownership documents must accompany the form, along with copies of any title or purchase documents showing information about components sourced from other vehicles.4Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Certificate of Inspection/Affidavit of Vehicle Construction Every inspection item has to be marked “pass.” If any item is marked fail, left blank, or improperly marked, a brand-new form and a fresh inspection are required.
Pass the DMV Inspection and Receive a Rebuilt Title
After the shop portion of the VP-064 is done, take the vehicle to a DMV inspection station. The DMV inspector verifies the VIN, checks that the vehicle matches the documentation, and confirms the rebuild meets standards. Once the DMV inspection is complete and the registration requirements are satisfied, the vehicle can be titled and registered.1Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Salvage Vehicles
The new document is a standard blue Nevada Certificate of Title, but it carries a permanent “Rebuilt” brand. That brand cannot be removed, and every future title issued for the vehicle will carry it.1Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Salvage Vehicles
Fees and Insurance
A first-time Nevada title costs $28.25.5Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Vehicle Registration Fees Registration is a separate charge that varies with the vehicle’s weight, type, and other factors. Vehicles registered in Clark County or Washoe County must also pass an emissions test, which adds cost. Budget for repair receipts, shop inspection charges, and towing if the vehicle isn’t running.
Nevada requires liability insurance on every registered vehicle with no grace period. The minimums are $25,000 for bodily injury or death of one person, $50,000 for bodily injury or death of two or more people, and $20,000 for property damage, all per accident.6Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 485 – Motor Vehicles Insurance and Financial Responsibility You must carry proof of Nevada liability insurance in the vehicle or on a mobile device at all times.7Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Insurance
Rebuilt-title vehicles are harder to insure in practice. Some carriers refuse to write policies on them. Others charge higher premiums and may limit or decline comprehensive and collision coverage. An insurer may require its own inspection or ask for repair receipts before issuing a policy. Call around before committing to a rebuild project, because adequate coverage at a workable price can be the hardest part of the whole process.
Why the DMV Denies Rebuilt Title Applications
Most denials come down to inspection failures or missing paperwork. The common ones:
- Any failed, blank, or improperly marked item on the VP-064. Substandard welds, frame misalignment, missing airbags, or non-functional seatbelts all trigger failure, and a single bad item means starting the inspection over on a new form.
- Missing ownership documents, parts receipts, or a completed VP-064. Receipts for major components from other vehicles need seller details and the donor vehicle’s identifying information.
- A VIN that doesn’t match DMV records, which brings delays and a possible investigation.
- Skipping the pre-repair Authorization for Vehicle Restoration on a vehicle five model years old or newer.
- A non-repairable certificate instead of a salvage title, which bars registration no matter how good the repair.
You can usually fix the problem and reapply. Correct the failed items, gather the missing documents, and run the inspection again. Misrepresenting the vehicle’s condition or history is a different matter and can turn an administrative problem into a fraud case.
Disclosure Rules if You Sell the Vehicle Later
Anyone who transfers an interest in a motor vehicle must disclose in writing, before the transfer, any information they know or reasonably should know about whether the vehicle is salvage, rebuilt, or reconstructed.1Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Salvage Vehicles It is also illegal to remove or conceal any marking on a title that identifies a vehicle as salvage or rebuilt.8Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 487 – Repair, Removal and Disposal of Vehicles Violations are felony offenses when the vehicle is valued at $250 or more, which covers nearly every car on the road.
You also cannot remove a salvage vehicle from Nevada with the intent to sell it without first obtaining a salvage title, a rule aimed at people who try to retitle the vehicle in a more lenient state to shed the brand.
