You cannot renew a Mississippi CDL online. The state’s online renewal portal is limited to Class D and Class R licenses, so Class A, B, and C commercial drivers must visit a Department of Public Safety driver license station in person.1Mississippi Department of Public Safety. Official Mississippi Department of Public Safety License Renewal Federal regulations require every state to run identity, medical certification, and Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse checks before issuing a renewed CDL, and those checks have to happen at a station window.2eCFR. 49 CFR 383.73 – State Procedures
Why the Online Portal Won’t Accept a CDL
This isn’t a Mississippi quirk. Before any state renews a CDL, it has to verify your medical certification through the Commercial Driver’s License Information System, confirm your citizenship or lawful permanent residency, query the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse, and verify your Social Security number if that wasn’t done on a prior transaction.2eCFR. 49 CFR 383.73 – State Procedures Several of those steps involve document inspection the online system isn’t built to handle for commercial credentials.
If you try to use the DPS self-service portal with a Class A, B, or C license, it will stop you. You can either walk in during business hours or book an appointment through the DPS online appointment system, which lists CDL renewal as its own category and tends to move faster than a walk-in.
What You Can Still Handle Online
The renewal itself requires a station visit, but a few related tasks can be done digitally and will shorten the time you spend at the counter.
- Your medical examiner submits your physical exam results electronically to FMCSA’s National Registry within 48 hours. Mississippi then pulls those results and posts them to your driving record automatically. Give it enough time after your exam before you try any credential transaction; if the results haven’t loaded, the state will reject your request.3Mississippi Department of Public Safety. - Address changes go through the DPS self-service portal. One catch: the DPS does not mail credentials to post office boxes, so if your post office doesn’t deliver to your physical address, you have to visit a station.4Mississippi Department of Public Safety. Change Address
- Appointments for CDL renewal, knowledge tests, medical card updates, and out-of-state transfers can be booked online for your preferred station.
What to Bring and What It Costs
Arriving prepared will cut your station time considerably. Pull together:
- Your current CDL.
- Your Social Security card, if your SSN hasn’t already been verified on a prior transaction.
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency. A valid passport or birth certificate usually satisfies this.2eCFR. 49 CFR 383.73 – State Procedures
- A current medical certification. Your status must show as “certified” in the system; CDL holders who let the medical examiner’s certificate lapse can become “not-certified” and lose the CDL.5Mississippi Department of Public Safety. Medical Certification Requirements
- Two documents proving Mississippi residency, such as a utility bill and a bank statement.

At the station you will also confirm your medical self-certification category, which describes whether you drive interstate or intrastate and whether you fall under excepted or non-excepted operations. Most CDL holders who cross state lines fall under non-excepted interstate and need a current DOT medical certificate on file.8Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Hazmat Endorsement Adds Steps
If your CDL carries a hazardous materials endorsement, plan ahead. Federal law requires the state to submit your fingerprints to the Transportation Security Administration and get a security threat assessment back before the endorsement can be renewed.9eCFR. 49 CFR Part 1572 – Credentialing and Security Threat Assessments
Mississippi uses the TSA Universal Enrollment Services program for hazmat fingerprinting, so this step is no longer done at DPS stations. You visit one of over 340 UES enrollment centers to be fingerprinted and enrolled. The DPS recommends starting at least 60 days before your CDL expires, since the TSA review takes time. Walk-ins are accepted at UES centers, but appointments get priority. You will also need to pass the hazmat knowledge test at your local CDL station.10DPS Driver Service Bureau. If Your CDL Has Already Expired
Mississippi CDLs run for five years and expire at midnight on your birthday.6DPS Driver Service Bureau. Driver Service Fees Letting yours lapse doesn’t immediately bar renewal, and the formal late fee is only $1.00.7Mississippi Department of Public Safety. DPS Driver Self-Service Portal – Frequently Asked Questions The real cost is driving on an expired commercial credential, which exposes you to fines and can jeopardize employment and insurance.
Federal rules cap CDL validity at eight years, and the Clearinghouse and medical certification checks the state runs on renewal mean that long-expired credentials can trigger retesting at the state’s discretion.2eCFR. 49 CFR 383.73 – State Procedures Renew before expiration, or within a few months after, if you want to avoid that risk.
After You Leave the Station
Once your renewal is validated, DPS processes and mails your new card within 48 hours. Allow another three to five business days for delivery.11DPS Driver Service Bureau. Frequently Asked Questions The card goes to the physical address on your license; the DPS does not mail to P.O. boxes or alternate addresses, so confirm your address is current before you complete the renewal.4Mississippi Department of Public Safety. Hang on to whatever paperwork you receive at the counter until the permanent card arrives. If you’re stopped or pulled into a roadside inspection during the waiting period, that documentation shows your renewal is in progress.
Military members stationed outside Mississippi should contact DPS directly about accommodations, since the standard process is in person.
