Who Can Renew Online

Your Temporary License and the Card in the Mail
After the payment clears, you can download and print a temporary paper license. It’s valid for 30 days and counts as legal proof of your driving privilege while you wait.6Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. If You Don’t Qualify for Online Renewal
Anyone who’s on the wrong cycle, needs a name or address change, or wants to upgrade to a Star ID has to renew in person. What Happens if You Let It Expire

After the 60-day grace period, you’re driving on an invalid license, and you can be cited. An expired license also creates insurance trouble. Insurers can deny claims if you’re in an accident without a valid license, and a citation can push up premiums or trigger a cancellation.
You have up to three years from your expiration date to renew without retesting.
