Can You Renew Your Driver’s License Online in Missouri?

You can renew your driver’s license online in Missouri if you’re between 21 and 49, hold a standard non-commercial license, didn’t renew online the last time around, have no changes to your name or address, and don’t need a REAL ID-compliant card. Everyone outside that group has to visit a license office in person.

Who Qualifies

Online renewal through the Department of Revenue is an exception, not the default. You need to meet every one of these conditions:

  • You’re between 21 and 49 years old.
  • You hold a Class F (standard operator) or Class E (for-hire) non-commercial license, or an instruction permit. Commercial driver’s license holders aren’t eligible.
  • You’re a U.S. citizen with a verified citizenship indicator already on file.
  • You renewed in person last time. Online renewal is only available every other cycle.
  • Nothing about your name, address, or other personal information needs to change.
  • Your license is in good standing, not suspended, revoked, or canceled.
  • You’ve had a vision examination within the past 12 months.

The vision exam is the requirement people miss most often. The results need to be on file before you start the online application, not submitted afterward. The Department of Revenue’s document checklist confirms that all non-commercial applicants must show a completed vision exam from within the prior 12 months.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Online Renewal Will Not Give You a REAL ID

This is the catch most people don’t see coming. A license renewed online is not REAL ID-compliant. Federal REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025, so a standard Missouri license alone won’t get you through a TSA checkpoint for a domestic flight or into secure federal buildings.2Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID

Getting a REAL ID-compliant Missouri license requires an in-person visit with original documents proving your identity, lawful U.S. status, Social Security number, and two proofs of Missouri residency.3Missouri Department of Revenue. Missouri REAL ID Information There’s no online path to your first REAL ID.

A valid U.S. passport works at TSA checkpoints as an alternative. If your license is your only federal ID, think carefully before renewing online. Travelers who arrive at a TSA checkpoint without acceptable identification now face a $45 fee to use the agency’s ConfirmID verification process.2Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID

What It Costs

Most Missouri drivers hold a Class F license. A Class E license covers for-hire driving, such as transporting passengers or delivering goods for pay.4Missouri Department of Revenue. Driver Guide Base renewal fees:

  • Class F, 6-year renewal: $25.50
  • Class F, 3-year renewal: $16.50
  • Class E, 6-year renewal: $33.00
  • Class E, 3-year renewal: $24.00

Drivers between 21 and 69 are issued six-year licenses, so most online renewals come to $25.50 for a Class F or $33.00 for a Class E.5Missouri Department of Revenue. Permit/Driver License/Nondriver ID Fees Paying by credit or debit card online adds a convenience fee of 2.0% plus $0.25 per transaction, roughly $0.76 on a $25.50 renewal.6Missouri Department of Revenue. How to Renew Online

Have your current driver’s license number, Social Security number, date of birth, a valid email address, and a credit or debit card ready. The Department of Revenue accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express.6Missouri Department of Revenue. Driver License Resources

Go to the MyDMV portal at mydmv.mo.gov and select the driver license renewal option. The system asks for your identifying information and checks eligibility. If something disqualifies you, such as a recent online renewal or an address change on file, it will send you to a license office instead.

Review your information carefully before submitting payment. Your renewed license uses the photo already on file from your last in-person visit, so there’s no option to upload a new picture. Once the transaction clears, you can print a temporary license to carry while you wait.

If Your License Has Already Expired

Missouri gives you a six-month grace period after expiration to renew without retaking any tests, and there’s no late fee. Two things to keep in mind. You cannot legally drive on an expired license even during the grace period, so renew before you get back behind the wheel. And if the full six months lapse, the grace period is gone: you’ll have to pass the written exam, vision test, road sign recognition test, and driving skills test at a Missouri State Highway Patrol examination station before applying for a new license.9Missouri Department of Revenue. When Online Isn’t an Option

Drivers 70 and older cannot renew online. The license term also drops from six years to three at age 70, and a vision test is required at every in-person renewal.10Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Revised Statutes of Missouri, RSMo Section 302.177

In-person renewal is also the path if you need a REAL ID, hold a commercial license, need to update any personal information, or renewed online last cycle.
