Can You Renew Your NC Driver’s License Online?

Yes — you can renew your NC driver’s license online if you hold a standard Class C license, your record is clear, and your license hasn’t been expired for more than two years. The renewal runs through the myNCDMV portal, takes about ten minutes, and costs $52 for drivers under 66 or $32.50 for drivers 66 and older, plus a small card processing fee.¹

Before you start, it’s worth confirming you qualify. The portal will catch disqualifiers automatically, but knowing them upfront saves the trip through the form.

Who Qualifies for Online Renewal

Online renewal is limited to standard Class C license holders whose records and credentials meet several conditions. You cannot renew online if any of the following apply:

Your license is suspended, or you owe outstanding debt to the DMV.
Your license carries a restriction other than “Corrective Lenses” (or code “24” on a full provisional license).
You hold a commercial driver license (CDL), a Class A, or a Class B license.
You hold a limited provisional license, a learner permit, or a limited learner permit.
You have a U.S. government document indicating legal presence of limited duration.

Your license also can’t have been expired for more than two years. Past that point, North Carolina treats you as a new applicant and requires the full examination — knowledge test, road signs test, vision screening, and road test — all in person.²

You can apply to renew during the 180-day window before your license expires. The DMV won’t accept an application filed earlier.³

Two Consecutive Online Renewals

North Carolina used to require alternating between online and in-person renewals every cycle. That rule has loosened. Non-REAL ID licenses and state ID cards can now be renewed online two consecutive times. REAL ID licenses can also be renewed online for a second consecutive cycle, but only if you had an in-person visit with a new photo taken since your last renewal.¹

If you’re not sure whether your recent photo counts, don’t guess. The portal runs an eligibility check before it asks for payment and will tell you.

What You Need Before You Start

Have three pieces of information ready so the portal can pull up your record:

Your current North Carolina driver license number. The license must have been issued after January 2000.
The last four digits of your Social Security number, or your I-94 number, or your alien registration number.
Your date of birth.

Keep your physical license nearby. The license number needs to match exactly as printed. You’ll also need a credit or debit card — the portal doesn’t accept anything else.

How the Online Renewal Works

Start at ncdot.gov/dmv and click “Renew Now.” That sends you to the myNCDMV portal, where you enter your license number, the last four of your Social Security number, and your date of birth. The system checks eligibility automatically. If something disqualifies you, it will say so before you pay anything.

Once verified, the portal walks you through a short set of confirmations. You’ll affirm that your name hasn’t changed, that your address is still correct, and that you haven’t had any changes in vision or physical ability that would affect your driving since your last renewal. These attestations stand in for the in-person screening a DMV office would run.²

Next comes payment. Enter your card, confirm the amount, and submit. The portal generates a confirmation immediately. Save or print it. If you have an existing photo on file with the DMV, no new photograph is required and the system reuses the one already in your record.²

What It Costs

North Carolina charges $6.50 per year of the license’s duration. Drivers aged 18 through 65 get an eight-year license, so the renewal fee is $52. Drivers 66 and older get a five-year license for $32.50.⁵ These amounts took effect after a fee adjustment on July 1, 2024, and the next scheduled increase isn’t until fiscal year 2028–2029.

Online transactions add a 1.85% credit card processing fee. On a $52 renewal, that comes to roughly $0.96. It’s not optional. In-office card payments carry a slightly lower processing fee at 1.22%.⁶

After You Submit

Keep using your current license for all driving purposes until the new card arrives or the old license becomes invalid for another reason.² Hold onto that confirmation receipt. If your current license expires before the new card shows up, the receipt paired with the old license shows you’re legal to drive.

The new card arrives in the mail within 20 business days — roughly four weeks on the calendar.¹ If it hasn’t shown up by then, contact NCDMV. The problem is usually a mailing address mismatch.

REAL ID and Online Renewal

Your first REAL ID cannot be obtained online. Federal law requires physical inspection of your identity documents (birth certificate, Social Security card, two proofs of residency), so a first-time REAL ID issuance has to happen at a driver license office.⁷ Once you have a REAL ID, later renewals can go online if you meet the photo requirement described above.

Since May 7, 2025, federal agencies have been enforcing the REAL ID Act for domestic air travel and access to secure federal facilities. A standard North Carolina license without the gold star won’t get you through a TSA checkpoint by itself. You’d need a U.S. passport, passport card, military ID, or another federally accepted document instead.⁸ If you fly regularly and don’t yet have a REAL ID, an in-person renewal lets you upgrade at the same visit.

If You Can’t Renew Online

If the portal rejects your renewal for a suspension, a license expired beyond two years, a CDL, or a needed REAL ID upgrade, an in-person visit is your only option. North Carolina’s driver license offices accept walk-ins. Wait times vary a lot by location and time of day. Midweek mornings tend to be quieter than Monday mornings or Friday afternoons.

For an in-person renewal, expect a road signs test and vision screening. Bring your current or expired license, your Social Security card if it’s not already on file, and any documents you need for a REAL ID upgrade if you’re combining errands.
