In Tennessee, you can take the driver’s test online only in a narrow case: the written knowledge test is available at home for applicants aged 15 to 17, with a parent or guardian acting as proctor.1Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security. Who Qualifies for the Online Test
The at-home option is restricted to teen applicants between 15 and 17 years old applying for a learner permit. A parent or legal guardian must supervise the entire session.1Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security. Driver License Knowledge Permit Test Online
If you’re 18 or older and applying for your first Tennessee driver license, there is no online testing option. The state directs adult first-time drivers to schedule a knowledge test appointment at a Driver Services Center.2Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security. Adult First-Time Drivers
How the At-Home Knowledge Test Works
Two devices are required. The parent or guardian installs the Tennessee Proctor ID (PID) App on their own phone or tablet from the Apple App Store or Google Play. The app requires at least an iPhone 6 running iOS 13.1 or a comparable Android device. The teen takes the test on a separate device, such as a computer or laptop, through the testing portal at tn-wt.iddls.com.3Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security. Once the proctor is registered in the app, they scan a QR code to verify both their identity and the teen’s identity before the test starts. At the 30-minute mark, the proctor scans another QR code to confirm the test environment hasn’t changed.1Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security. The state recommends studying the Tennessee Comprehensive Driver Manual rather than relying on practice tests alone.4State of Tennessee. Tennessee Driver License Online Practice Test
What Happens If You Fail
You get two online attempts, and you have to wait at least 24 hours between them.1Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security. The Road Test Has to Be In Person
There is no remote version of the driving skills test. You schedule it through the Tennessee Department of Safety’s online portal, though applicants under 16 or from out of state submit a scheduling request instead.6State of Tennessee. How Do I Make, View, or Cancel an Appointment at a Driver Service Center
The test lasts about 15 minutes. An examiner rides in the passenger seat while you demonstrate signaling, turning, backing up, lane changes, and safe following distances. Before you start the engine, the examiner inspects the vehicle you brought: lights, horn, mirrors, seatbelts, tires, windshield, doors, and the dashboard warning lights. An active check-engine, ABS, airbag, or tire-pressure light is grounds for rejection, and you’ll have to reschedule.
If you fail the road test, you can’t retest the same day. The mandatory wait depends on how many errors you made, and the same rule applies to every subsequent failed attempt.7State of Tennessee. Failed Road Test
You’ll Still Need to Visit a Driver Services Center
Passing the knowledge test online doesn’t finish the process. You still have to go in person to complete a vision screening, submit your documents, and receive your learner permit.
