Old Saybrook and some other offices handle standard permits only and do not test for motorcycle endorsements or commercial learner’s permits.

Every appointment must be booked in advance through the DMV’s online scheduling system. Walk-ins are not accepted.

The One Part You Do Online: The Work Zone Safety Course

What to Bring to the Appointment

You need two forms of identification, with at least one from the primary list. Primary documents include a U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport, or passport card. Secondary documents include a Social Security card, a certified school transcript, or a military ID, among others.3Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles. You also need two separate proofs of Connecticut residency. They must come from different sources, be dated within 90 days, and show your name and Connecticut address. The computer-based knowledge test is offered in 11 languages: Albanian, Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, English, French, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Hard-copy written tests are available in 24 additional languages, including Haitian Creole, Korean, Hindi, and Urdu.1CT.gov. Get a Learner’s Permit The permit is valid for two years from the issue date or until you obtain your driver’s license, whichever comes first.

If You Fail

Failing is not the end of the process. Connecticut does not publish a mandatory waiting period before retaking the exam, but you will need to book a new appointment at a hub office. The practical delay depends on scheduling availability. Use the time to review the sections you missed, especially road signs and right-of-way rules.
