You can use a Michigan Enhanced Driver’s License to enter Canada and return to the United States at any land or sea border crossing. The EDL is accepted by both U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Canada Border Services Agency as proof of identity and U.S. citizenship, so one card handles the crossing in both directions.1Canada Border Services Agency. Travel and Identification Documents for Entering Canada It costs $45 for a first-time applicant and doubles as your regular Michigan driver’s license.2State of Michigan. Enhanced License and IDs
Where the EDL Works and Where It Doesn’t
The EDL was created under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, the federal rule that since June 1, 2009 has required travelers to show a document proving both identity and U.S. citizenship when re-entering the United States from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, or the Caribbean.3U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Enhanced Drivers Licenses: What Are They? The card has an RFID chip that transmits a reference number as you approach the booth, which lets officers pull up your information before you hand anything over. Michigan ships a protective sleeve with the card that blocks the chip when you’re not at a checkpoint.2State of Michigan. Enhanced License and IDs
Here is the limit that trips people up: the EDL is good only at land and sea crossings. If you fly to Canada, you need a passport. The same goes for any other international air travel.2State of Michigan. Enhanced License and IDs So the card is the right tool if you drive across a bridge or tunnel or arrive by boat, and the wrong tool the moment you buy a plane ticket.
One useful side benefit: the EDL also meets federal REAL ID standards, which became mandatory for domestic air travel on May 7, 2025.4Transportation Security Administration. TSA to Highlight REAL ID Enforcement Deadline of May 7, 2025 A standard Michigan license that isn’t REAL ID-compliant won’t get you through a TSA checkpoint for a domestic flight. The EDL will.
Who Can Get One
Three things have to be true. You must be a U.S. citizen, a Michigan resident, and eligible for a standard Michigan driver’s license.2State of Michigan. Enhanced License and IDs If your license is currently suspended, revoked, or restricted, you can’t get an EDL until the underlying issue is cleared.
Non-drivers aren’t shut out of the border-crossing benefit. Michigan also issues an Enhanced State ID with the same citizenship and residency requirements, minus the driving piece.
How to Apply
The initial application has to happen in person at a Secretary of State branch office. There is no online or mail option for first issuance. Branch staff review your documents and conduct a short interview to confirm your identity and citizenship.5State of Michigan. Enhanced License and ID
Documents to Bring
You need one document proving U.S. citizenship, chosen from this list:5State of Michigan. Enhanced License and ID
- A valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card.
- A certified birth certificate with a raised seal or stamp, issued by a U.S. government agency or territory.
- A Consular Report of Birth Abroad (Form FS-240, DS-1350, or FS-545).
- A Certificate of Citizenship (Form N-560 or N-561).
- A Certificate of Naturalization (Form N-550, N-570, or N-578).
You also need documents verifying Michigan residency and your Social Security number. A photo is taken at the branch. If you don’t already have a certified copy of your birth certificate, order one before your appointment.
Name Changes
If your current legal name doesn’t match the name on your citizenship document, you need official proof linking them: an original marriage certificate, a certified divorce decree, or a court order. More than one name change means more than one document, enough to build an unbroken chain from the name on your birth record to the name you use now.5State of Michigan. Enhanced License and ID Gathering the paperwork before you walk in beats making a second trip.
Fee and Timing
A first-time EDL costs $45, compared with $25 for a standard Michigan driver’s license.5State of Michigan. Enhanced License and ID The card typically arrives within two to three weeks, though the Secretary of State advises allowing up to 45 days.2State of Michigan. Using the EDL at the Canadian Border
Canada accepts the EDL. The Canada Border Services Agency lists the U.S. Enhanced Driver’s License as a valid document for proving identity and citizenship on entry, which means the same card you’ll use to come home will also get you in.1Canada Border Services Agency. Travel and Identification Documents for Entering Canada
At the booth, Canadian officers may ask about the purpose and length of your visit, any goods you’re bringing in, and whether you have a criminal history. Short, direct answers are the right approach. You don’t need to show anything beyond the EDL in most cases, though carrying your vehicle registration and proof of insurance is sensible, since Canadian provinces require drivers to be insured. ArriveCAN is no longer required for land crossings.
A Valid EDL Doesn’t Guarantee Entry
Canadian border officers can turn away anyone with a criminal record, and the threshold is lower than most Americans expect. A single DUI conviction, even one from years ago, can make you inadmissible, because impaired driving is treated as a serious criminal offense under Canadian law.6U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Entering Canada and the United States with DUI Offenses
A conviction isn’t necessarily permanent. Canada recognizes “deemed rehabilitation”: for offenses punishable in Canada by less than ten years in prison (which covers most DUIs), you may be considered rehabilitated automatically ten years after you complete your entire sentence, including any driving prohibition or probation. You can also apply for individual rehabilitation after five years.7Canada.ca. Rehabilitation for Persons Who Are Inadmissible to Canada Because of Past Criminal Activity If you have any concern about admissibility, resolve it before you drive to the crossing. A denial at the border wastes the trip and creates a record.
Crossing with Children
Kids add paperwork most parents don’t plan for. Canada recommends that a parent traveling alone with a minor carry a signed consent letter from the other parent, along with a copy of the child’s birth certificate.8Canada.ca. Minor Children Travelling to Canada The letter should be in English or French, signed by the non-traveling parent, and include that parent’s address, phone number, and a photocopy of their signed passport or government ID.
Divorced or separated parents sharing custody should bring the custody documents with the consent letter. A sole-custody parent should bring the custody decree and can sign the letter alone. If the other parent is deceased, bring a copy of the death certificate.8Canada.ca. Minor Children Travelling to Canada
Children need their own travel documents, and they can’t get an EDL because they don’t hold a driver’s license. A U.S. citizen child can use a passport or passport card for the crossing. Plan the paperwork for each family member separately.
Expiration, Renewal, and Taking Care of the Card
Michigan driver’s licenses, including EDLs, are valid for four years and expire on your birthday in the fourth year after issuance.9Michigan Legislature. Michigan Code 257.314 – Michigan Vehicle Code (Excerpt) An expired EDL will not get you across the border, so check the date before you plan a trip, not after you’ve packed.
Renewal is simpler than the first application. Most EDL renewals can be done online, by mail, or at a self-service station, as long as a new photo isn’t required (that’s roughly every 12 years). The renewal fee is $38, or $45 if you renew late.5State of Michigan. Enhanced License and ID
The RFID chip can be damaged by bending, scratching, or excessive heat. Keep the card in the protective sleeve it came with, which also prevents the chip from being read by unauthorized scanners.2State of Michigan. Enhanced License and IDs If the chip stops working, you’ll usually learn about it at the booth.
If Your EDL Is Lost or Stolen in Canada
Reporting the card lost cancels it immediately, and a canceled EDL can never be used at the border again. If this happens while you’re in Canada, contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate, or speak with U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the port of entry when you reach the crossing to return home.2State of Michigan. Enhanced License and IDs CBP has procedures for getting U.S. citizens back into the country without their primary document, but expect more questioning and more time.
The practical hedge is a backup. A passport card fits in a wallet, is accepted at the same land and sea crossings, and turns a lost EDL into an inconvenience instead of a stranded trip.
