Bet365 is legal in Michigan. The Michigan Gaming Control Board approved its launch as an online sports betting and casino platform in April 2026, so if you are at least 21 and physically inside the state, you can register, deposit, and place wagers through the app or website.1Michigan Gaming Control Board. Who Can Bet
You must be at least 21 to open an account or place any wager. The Lawful Sports Betting Act defines an authorized participant as someone with a valid account who is at least 21 years old.3Michigan Legislature. Lawful Sports Betting Act – Act 149 of 2019 Betting while underage is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail, a fine of up to $10,000, or both.4Michigan Legislature. Residency doesn’t matter, but your physical location does. Each time you try to place a bet, the platform checks where you are using geolocation technology required by the MGCB, and it will block the wager if you’ve crossed into another state.5Michigan Gaming Control Board. Anyone on the MGCB’s responsible gaming database is blocked from opening an account at any licensed Michigan sportsbook, and so is anyone who has enrolled in the state’s voluntary self-exclusion program.3Michigan Legislature. Lawful Sports Betting Act – Act 149 of 2019
Signing Up and Funding Your Account
Registration requires your full legal name, date of birth, current address, email, and the last four digits of your Social Security number. The verification feels heavier than a typical app signup because the Lawful Sports Betting Act requires operators to build in fraud detection and anti-money-laundering checks.3Michigan Legislature. Download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, and grant location permissions the first time it opens. You cannot bet without them. On desktop, you may need to install a small geolocation plugin that performs the same check through nearby network signals.
Once your account is verified, head to the cashier to deposit. Bet365 accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Maestro debit cards, and prepaid cards. Deposits are typically instant. Withdrawals usually take one to three business days to reach a debit card or bank account, though bet365’s internal processing often finishes within a few hours.
What You Can and Can’t Bet On
Michigan is relatively permissive. College games and college player prop bets are both allowed, which puts the state ahead of many others on market variety. The MGCB’s rules do carve out several categories:
- No wagers on high school events or any contest where most participants are under 18.
- No pari-mutuel horse racing through a sportsbook; horse betting runs under a separate regulatory system.
- No bets on whether a specific athlete will suffer an injury.
- No casino-style games through the sports betting product; roulette, poker, and dice fall under bet365’s separate internet gaming license.
- No wagers on events whose outcome is already known.
The MGCB can also prohibit any event or wager type it considers a threat to betting integrity.6Legal Information Institute. Michigan Administrative Code R. 432.745 – Authorized and Prohibited Events
Taxes on What You Win
Winnings are taxable income at both the federal and Michigan state level, whether or not you receive a tax form.
Federally, the sportsbook files a Form W-2G when your winnings reach $2,000 or more and the payout is at least 300 times the size of your wager, under the thresholds in effect for 2026.7Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754 (Rev. January 2026) When a payout exceeds $5,000, bet365 withholds 24% for federal income tax before paying you. Smaller wins still have to go on your return; the IRS expects all gambling income to be reported, form or no form.
Michigan taxes gambling winnings at its flat income tax rate of 4.25%. There is no separate gambling bracket. The winnings add to your other income on your state return.
You can deduct gambling losses, but only on your federal return and only if you itemize on Schedule A. The deduction can’t exceed the gambling income you reported for the year, so losses never create a net deduction against ordinary income. Keep detailed records of dates, stakes, and outcomes if you plan to claim it.8Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 419, Gambling Income and Losses
If You Need to Step Away
Michigan runs a voluntary self-exclusion program that covers every licensed online sportsbook and casino in the state, bet365 included. You can enroll for one year, five years, or life. Once you’re on the list, operators are required to close your accounts, cancel open bets, return your remaining balance, and stop sending promotions. You can apply online, in person at MGCB offices, or by email to the MGCB’s Division of Public Licensing.
