The Chambers County, Texas sales tax rate runs from 6.75% in unincorporated areas with no overlapping special districts up to 8.25% in most of the county’s cities. Texas caps the combined state and local rate at 8.25%, and the exact figure you pay depends on where the sale happens and which special purpose districts cover that address.1Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. How the Rate Is Built
Every taxable sale in the county starts with the 6.25% state sales tax, which is the same everywhere in Texas.2State of Texas. Texas Tax Code 151.051 – Sales Tax Imposed Chambers County adds a 0.5% county sales tax on top of that, authorized under a state law that limits the combined local rate at any one address to 2%.3State of Texas. Texas Tax Code 323.101 – Tax Rate
So the floor is 6.75%: state plus county, with nothing else layered on. From there, city taxes and special purpose district taxes can bring the total up to the 8.25% ceiling.
Rates by City
Most Chambers County cities use the full 2% local allotment, which brings their combined rate to the state cap. Cove is the one that comes in lower. The 2026 combined rates published by the Texas Comptroller:4Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Texas Sales and Use Tax Rates
- Anahuac: 8.25%
- Baytown (Chambers County portion): 8.25%
- Beach City: 8.25%
- Cove: 7.75%
- Mont Belvieu: 8.25%
- Old River-Winfree: 8.25%
Baytown straddles the Chambers and Harris county line, so the correct rate depends on which side of the line a business sits. The Chambers County portion of Baytown carries its local city rate plus overlapping levies for fire prevention and crime control districts.5Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. City Sales and Use Tax Cove’s 7.75% reflects a smaller city tax component that does not consume the full 2% local allotment.
Special Purpose Districts Outside City Limits
Unincorporated does not automatically mean 6.75%. Special purpose districts are independent taxing entities that can add their own sales tax to locations inside their boundaries, and several of them overlap parts of Chambers County.
The Chambers County Health Services district imposes a 0.5% sales tax to fund health-related services and covers multiple cities and portions of unincorporated land.5Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Special Purpose District Sales and Use Tax
Because these districts operate independently, a resident in unincorporated Chambers County could end up paying anywhere from 6.75% up to the 8.25% cap depending on which districts touch that address. The reliable way to confirm a specific location is to look it up through the Comptroller’s address-based rate locator.
Which Rate Applies to a Given Sale
Texas does not use one simple rule. Local sales tax generally follows the seller’s place of business for in-person transactions. Walk into a store in Anahuac and the sale is taxed at Anahuac’s 8.25%, no matter where you live.7Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Local Sales and Use Tax Collection – A Guide for Sellers
Online and shipped orders work differently. When a seller receives the order outside a Texas place of business and ships to a Chambers County address, the sale is consummated at the destination, so the buyer’s local rate applies. A “place of business” for this purpose is a location where sales staff receive at least three orders per calendar year; websites, servers, and IP addresses do not count.7Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Large online marketplaces handle this on your behalf. Texas requires marketplace providers to collect and remit both state and local sales tax on sales made through their platforms, so the correct Chambers County rate should already be built into the checkout total.8Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Use Tax on Out-of-State Purchases
Buying from an out-of-state seller who does not collect Texas tax does not make the purchase tax-free. You owe use tax at the same combined rate that would have applied if you had bought the item locally in Chambers County.1Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Sales and Use Tax
This covers taxable goods ordered online from a retailer that fails to collect Texas tax, equipment or vehicles brought into Texas for permanent use, and items pulled from resale inventory for personal or business use. If you already paid sales tax to another state, Texas gives you credit for that amount; if the other state’s rate was lower than your Chambers County rate, you owe the difference. Businesses with a Texas sales tax permit report use tax on their regular return, and individuals without a permit can report it directly to the Comptroller.
Annual Sales Tax Holiday
