Running the Check
To pull your status, the portal asks for four things: your driver’s license number, your last name, your date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number or alien registration number.2West Virginia Department of Transportation. West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles – Driving Record Every field has to match DMV records exactly. A misspelled name or a transposed digit returns a failed search rather than a partial match.
If you don’t have your license card in front of you, the number often appears on old insurance documents or vehicle registration paperwork. There is no fee for the status check itself.
What comes back is a status, not a history. You’ll see whether your license stands as valid or whether some hold is in place. Violations, points, and past convictions are not part of this screen; those live on the full driving record, which is a separate paid request.
What the Status Result Means
Your license will come back under one of four labels, and each one carries different consequences if you drive.
- Valid. Full driving privileges, no active sanctions.
- Suspended. Privileges are temporarily removed, either for a set period or until you meet specific conditions. Driving during a suspension is illegal and makes the underlying problem worse.
- Revoked. Privileges have been terminated by administrative or court order. Revocation is more serious than suspension, with longer waiting periods and stricter reinstatement requirements. - Cancelled. The DMV has voided the license as if it were never properly issued. Under state law, cancellation applies when the holder wasn’t entitled to the license, provided false or incorrect information, committed fraud on the application, or never paid the required fee. If your result is anything other than valid, stop driving until you sort it out. The penalties for driving while suspended or revoked escalate quickly, especially when the original reason was a DUI.
Why a License Comes Back Not Valid
West Virginia Code 17B-3-6 gives the DMV broad authority to suspend or revoke a license without a preliminary hearing based on the driving record. That includes offenses requiring mandatory revocation, reckless driving that causes injury or property damage, a pattern of serious traffic violations, habitual negligent driving, or an out-of-state offense that would trigger suspension here.5West Virginia Legislature. Some of the specific triggers people don’t expect:
Points. West Virginia uses a point system for moving violations. Twelve points brings a 30-day suspension, and the penalty grows with the total, up to a 120-day suspension at 20 or more points. A warning letter goes out at six points.6West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles. Point System
DUI. A DUI conviction triggers mandatory revocation. First offense is six months, or one year if the BAC was 0.15% or higher. A second is ten years, a third is life.3West Virginia Legislature. Insurance lapse. Letting liability coverage drop on a registered vehicle brings a 30-day suspension for a first offense, though you can avoid it by paying a $200 penalty and providing proof of current coverage. A second offense within five years brings a mandatory 90-day suspension, plus suspension of the vehicle’s registration.8West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles. Consumer Insurance Information
Missed court date. If you skip a court appearance on a motor vehicle violation or a criminal charge, the court notifies the DMV and your license gets suspended. Circuit, magistrate, and municipal courts can all trigger this.9West Virginia Legislature. West Virginia Code 17B-3-3a – Suspending License for Failure to Respond or Appear in Court This is the one that catches people who forgot about an old ticket and only find out during a traffic stop.
Child support arrears. The Bureau for Child Support Enforcement can move against a driver’s license once arrears equal six months or more of payments, after other enforcement methods have been tried. The same applies to unpaid court-ordered medical support. Both standard and commercial licenses can be targeted.10West Virginia Legislature. What It Costs to Drive on an Invalid License
Driving on a suspended or revoked license adds new charges on top of whatever problem you already had. For a general (non-DUI) suspension or revocation, a first or second offense is a misdemeanor with a fine between $100 and $500. A third or subsequent offense is a misdemeanor with 30 to 90 days in jail and a fine of $150 to $500.
For driving while revoked because of a DUI or a test refusal, the numbers jump. A first offense is a misdemeanor with 30 days to six months in jail and a fine of $100 to $500. A second is a misdemeanor with six months to one year in jail and a fine of $1,000 to $3,000. A third or subsequent offense is a felony with one to three years in state prison and a fine of $3,000 to $5,000.

Status Check vs. Full Driving Record
The free status check tells you your current standing. It does not show violation history, point totals, convictions, or past sanctions. For that, you need a full driving record, which is a paid request.
The record costs $7.50 if you give your name and driver’s license number, or $8.50 if the DMV has to look you up by date of birth and Social Security number. You can request it through the same self-service portal with a credit or debit card, or by mail to the WV DMV Driving Records Section, PO Box 17020, Charleston, WV 25317, or by email to DMVDrivingRecordFax@wv.gov. Mail and email requests need a completed DMV-101-PS1 form, a copy of your valid driver’s license or state photo ID, and the fee. If Your Status Isn’t Valid
Reinstatement depends on what caused the loss. In general, you wait out the suspension or revocation period, resolve the underlying problem (pay the fines, settle the judgment, produce proof of insurance, clear the court date), and pay a reinstatement fee to the DMV. Fees vary by offense. The self-service portal accepts reinstatement payment by credit card, and the DMV gets instant notice of payment.14West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles. Drivers facing a DUI-related revocation may be able to get limited driving privileges through West Virginia’s Alcohol and Drug Test and Lock (Interlock) Program instead of sitting out the full revocation.
