Chenango County tax maps show the boundaries, acreage, and identification number for every taxable parcel in the county, and you can reach them three ways: walk into the Real Property Tax Services office at 5 Court Street in Norwich and inspect the assessor’s copies for free, order a paper print starting at $2, or subscribe to the county’s online GIS system for $250 a year plus a one-time $25 PIN fee for new users.1Chenango County, NY. What the Maps Show
Each tax map is a scaled drawing of every real property parcel within a city, town, or village. Parcels appear with outlined boundaries, and lots under one acre carry dimension labels pulled from recorded deeds. When deed data is unavailable, the county scales the measurement off the drawing itself and marks it with an “(s)” to flag that it’s an approximation.3New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Beyond the lines themselves, the maps carry acreage figures, parcel identification numbers, and the position of each lot relative to roads and rights-of-way. Classification codes and shading separate residential parcels from commercial or agricultural ones. The acreage and ID data feed directly into the county assessment roll.
One thing the maps do not reliably show: school district lines and some municipal borders. They are built for assessment work, not zoning or land-use planning.3New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. General Guide for Tax Mapping in New York State
Find Your Section-Block-Lot Number First
Every parcel in the county is identified by a Section-Block-Lot (SBL) number. The section places you in a general area, the block narrows to a cluster of lots, and the lot pinpoints your specific parcel. On official paperwork, the same string sometimes appears as the “tax map number” or “property ID number.”4New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Section, Block, Lot (SBL) Format
The quickest place to grab yours is the property description block on your most recent school or county tax bill. It also appears on the local assessment roll kept at the assessor’s office. No bill handy? Call Real Property Tax Services at 607-337-1490 with the address or owner name and they’ll pull the number for you.5Chenango County, NY. Real Property Tax Services Having the SBL in hand before you start searching saves time no matter which access method you use.
Searching Online Through the County GIS
Chenango County’s online mapping tool runs on a subscription platform hosted by Schneider Geospatial. It is not a free public portal. The annual subscription is $250, and new users pay a one-time $25 PIN fee, for a first-year total of $275. Renew before your subscription expires and you stay at the $250 rate.1Chenango County, NY. Online GIS Information
Subscribers can search by owner name, tax map number, or street address. The system overlays parcel lines on aerial photography, so you can switch between a clean map view and a satellite view showing buildings and tree lines. Measurement tools calculate distances and identify abutting properties, and the built-in print function handles letter-size and 11-by-17-inch pages with adjustable scale.1Chenango County, NY. For title companies, surveyors, and real estate agents who pull parcels every week, the subscription pays for itself. For a homeowner checking one lot, it rarely does.
Free and Low-Cost Alternatives
If you just need a look at one parcel, you have cheaper options.
The Real Property Tax Services office at 5 Court Street in Norwich keeps the assessor’s copies of every tax map as a public record. Walk in and inspect them at no charge. State rules require the assessor’s copies to be displayed and available for public inspection.3New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. General Guide for Tax Mapping in New York State
The County Clerk’s office runs a separate eSearch system where guests can view recorded document information — deeds, mortgages, and other filings — online for free. Subscribers to eSearch can view and print the actual recorded documents.6Chenango County, NY. eSearch – Public Records Link It doesn’t replace the GIS mapping tool, but it’s useful for pulling deed references and confirming ownership history.
At the state level, the New York State GIS Clearinghouse at gis.ny.gov offers free parcel data for planning and general reference. The state attaches a plain warning to it: the data is not a substitute for a legal survey and may not reflect recent changes.7NYS GIS Clearinghouse. Parcels

What a Tax Map Will Not Do for You
A tax map tells you roughly where your lines fall and how much land the county believes you own for tax purposes. It does not establish legal boundaries. The New York State GIS Clearinghouse states that parcel data “is for planning and general use purposes only and is not a substitute for a legal parcel survey.”7NYS GIS Clearinghouse. Parcels
Remember that dimensions come from deeds when deeds are available and are scaled off the drawing when they aren’t. A scaled measurement can be off by feet. If you are building a fence, placing a structure near a property line, resolving a neighbor dispute, or buying land with unclear boundaries, hire a licensed land surveyor to physically measure and mark the parcel. The parcel identification number on an approved tax map does count as a legal description on the assessment roll, so the SBL itself is legally valid for tax purposes. The drawn lines are not legally binding as property boundaries.3New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. General Guide for Tax Mapping in New York State
If You Spot an Error
Wrong acreage, a boundary that doesn’t match your deed, or a parcel split that was never recorded on the map — all of these go first to the Chenango County director of Real Property Tax Services. Under state law, the county director handles year-to-year changes to keep the maps current, and the maintenance expense is spread across all taxable property as a county charge.8New York State Senate. Real Property Tax Law 503 – Tax Maps
When the error affects your assessed value, say by showing two acres where you own one and a half, the overcharge recurs every tax cycle until it’s fixed. You can formally challenge the assessment by filing Form RP-524 with your local Board of Assessment Review. In most Chenango County towns the deadline is Grievance Day, the fourth Tuesday in May. Miss it and you lose administrative and court review for the year.9New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Grievance Procedures Bring a recent survey, deed, or other documentation to the hearing. Most map-related corrections resolve at this administrative level if the paperwork is solid.
If you’ve recently bought or subdivided land and the map still shows the old configuration, a call to Real Property Tax Services at 607-337-1490 can get the update moving.5Chenango County, NY. Real Property Tax Services
