Chicago Car Tax: Sticker, Use Tax, and Lease Fees

If you own, lease, or buy a vehicle in Chicago, the city layers several taxes and fees on top of what the state and county already charge. The main Chicago car tax obligations in 2026 are an annual city vehicle sticker starting at $100.17 for a standard passenger car, a 1.5% municipal use tax on vehicle purchases, and a 15% lease transaction tax applied to every monthly payment on a leased vehicle. Residential parking permits and ride-share surcharges can add more depending on how you use your car or get around.

The Annual City Vehicle Sticker

Chicago’s city vehicle sticker, formally a Wheel Tax license under Chicago Municipal Code Chapter 3-56, is required for every vehicle owned by a Chicago resident or garaged at a Chicago address.1Municipal Code of Chicago. The 2026 rates set by the City Clerk’s office depend on weight class and use:2Office of the City Clerk. Vehicle Sticker Type Prices

  • Passenger: $100.17 for vehicles with a curb weight of 4,500 pounds or less and payload capacity under 2,500 pounds.
  • Large Passenger: $159.12 for vehicles over 4,500 pounds with payload capacity under 2,500 pounds.
  • Motorbike: $55.69.3Office of the City Clerk. Chicago City Sticker FAQs
  • Small Truck: $247.50 for trucks, pickups, or vans with a gross weight of 16,000 pounds or less and payload capacity of 2,500 pounds or more.
  • Large Truck: $556.92 for vehicles with gross weight above 16,000 pounds and payload capacity of 2,500 pounds or more.

The classification turns on specs, not body style. A heavy van with enough payload capacity can land in the Small Truck tier even if it looks nothing like a pickup. Check your vehicle registration card for the curb weight and payload figures before assuming where you fall.

Municipal Use Tax When You Buy a Vehicle

Buying a car in Chicago triggers the Chicago Home Rule Municipal Use Tax under Chicago Municipal Code Chapter 3-40. The rate is 1.5% of the purchase price or fair market value as of January 2026, an increase from the prior 1.25%.4City of Chicago. Tax Rate Changes as of January 2026 This 1.5% sits on top of applicable state and county sales taxes.

The tax applies regardless of where you buy. The rule is designed to stop Chicago residents from avoiding local tax by shopping in suburbs with lower rates. If you buy from a dealership inside Chicago, the dealer typically collects and remits the tax for you. Private-party sales work differently: if you buy from a friend or through a classified listing, you have to self-report and pay the municipal use tax directly to the city. That’s the step most buyers miss and only hear about later when the city sends a notice.

Lease Transaction Tax on Monthly Payments

If you lease rather than buy, the Chicago Personal Property Lease Transaction Tax under Chicago Municipal Code Chapter 3-32 applies to every payment.5Municipal Code of Chicago. Chicago Municipal Code Chapter 3-32 – Chicago Personal Property Lease Transaction Tax As of January 1, 2026, the rate is 15% of each lease payment.6City of Chicago. Personal Property Lease Transaction Tax (7550) That is a jump from 11% in 2025 and 9% before that.

The math gets expensive fast. On a $400 monthly lease payment, the tax alone adds $60 per month, or $720 per year. Leasing companies usually collect the tax and bundle it into your monthly bill, so check your lease statement to confirm the current 15% rate is being applied. The new rate applies to payments due on or after January 1, 2026, even on leases that started under the earlier 11% or 9% rates.

Deadlines, Late Fees, and Penalties

City stickers expire on the last day of the month printed on the sticker. The City Clerk sends renewal notices about 45 days before expiration, but not receiving one does not excuse a late renewal.3Office of the City Clerk. Chicago City Sticker FAQs

New residents and buyers of newly acquired vehicles get 30 days to purchase a sticker before late fees apply. Your sticker term starts on the first of the month you moved to the city or acquired the vehicle, no matter when you actually buy. Miss that 30-day window and the city adds a $60 late fee ($30 for senior-discounted stickers) plus prorated back charges for each month you should have had a sticker.

Driving without a valid sticker is a separate offense. Fines run from $200 to $500 per violation, and each day out of compliance counts as its own offense.1Municipal Code of Chicago. Many Chicago neighborhoods restrict street parking to residents during posted hours. If you live in one of these zones, you can add a residential parking designation to your city sticker for $35 per year.7Office of the City Clerk. Residential Zone Parking FAQs The cost is prorated if your sticker expires partway through the year, and the parking permit expires with the sticker.

For visitors, daily guest permits cost $15 per sheet of 15 passes, with a maximum of three sheets (45 passes) per household every 30 days. Each pass covers one vehicle for one day. If you have regular visitors or a home-care aide, budget for these.

Ride-Share Taxes if You Don’t Own a Car

Chicago’s vehicle-related taxes reach you even without a car. The Ground Transportation Tax adds a surcharge to every Uber, Lyft, or other ride-share trip. As of January 6, 2026:8City of Chicago. Ground Transportation Tax (7595)

  • Single rides: $1.13 base per ride, plus $1.50 for pickups or drop-offs in a designated Congestion Zone between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., plus $5.00 for rides touching O’Hare, Midway, Navy Pier, or McCormick Place.
  • Shared rides: $0.53 base per ride, plus $0.60 for Congestion Zone pickups or drop-offs between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. on weekdays, plus the same $5.00 airport and venue surcharge.

A single ride from downtown to O’Hare during peak hours can carry $7.63 in city taxes on top of the fare. Choosing a shared ride cuts the base tax and congestion surcharge roughly in half.
