Every dog living in Chicago that is four months or older needs a Chicago dog license from the City Clerk’s Office. Fees start at $5 a year for a spayed or neutered dog, and you have 30 days from your move-in date to register if you are new to the city.1American Legal Publishing. Who Needs One and By When
Chicago Municipal Code 7-12-140 covers every dog owner inside city limits. There are no exceptions for breed or size. The deadline is whichever comes first: your dog’s four-month birthday, or 30 days after you move to Chicago with a dog you already own.1American Legal Publishing. Municipal Code of Chicago 7-12-140 – License Required
A license runs for one year or three years, but it expires early if your dog’s rabies vaccination expires first. Keeping that vaccine current is what keeps the license valid for its full term.
What It Costs
Rates under Municipal Code 7-12-170 depend on whether your dog is sterilized and which term you pick:2American Legal Publishing. Municipal Code of Chicago 7-12-170 – License Fees
- Sterilized dog, one year: $5
- Sterilized dog, three years: $15
- Non-sterilized dog, one year: $50
- Non-sterilized dog, three years: $150
To get the sterilized rate, you need proof of spaying or neutering from your vet.
Senior Rates
If you are 65 or older, the fees drop sharply:2American Legal Publishing. Municipal Code of Chicago 7-12-170 – License Fees
- Sterilized dog, one year: $2.50
- Sterilized dog, three years: $7.50
- Non-sterilized dog, one year: $5
- Non-sterilized dog, three years: $15
A three-year term only pays off if your dog is on a three-year rabies vaccine, since the license cannot outlast the shot.3Office of the City Clerk. Dog Registration
What to Have Ready Before You Apply
The one document you cannot skip is a current rabies vaccination certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian. The city will not issue a license without it.1American Legal Publishing. Municipal Code of Chicago 7-12-140 – License Required A rabies shot at a Chicago-area vet typically runs $10 to $40.
The application form asks for:4American Legal Publishing. Municipal Code of Chicago 7-12-150 – License Application Forms
- Your name, home address, and phone number
- Your dog’s breed, color, age, and sex
- The name and address of the vet who gave the rabies shot
If you want the sterilized rate, keep your vet’s proof of the procedure handy too. Match the details on your form to what appears on the rabies certificate.

By Mail
Mail a completed application and a check to the City Clerk’s Office, 121 North LaSalle Street, Room 107, Chicago, IL 60602. Downloadable PDF forms are on the City Clerk’s website. Expect longer processing than online or in person.
Wearing the Tag
Once the emblem arrives, the code gives you two options whenever your dog is out on a public street or sidewalk: keep the tag visible on the collar or harness, or be ready to produce it for any authorized city official who asks.1American Legal Publishing. Municipal Code of Chicago 7-12-140 – License Required Keeping it on the collar is simpler, and it doubles as a recovery tool: anyone who finds a loose dog can call 312-744-DOGS, read off the emblem number, and the Clerk’s office can match it to your contact information.
Fines If You Skip It
An unlicensed dog carries a fine of $30 to $200 per violation, and each day without a license counts as a separate offense.1American Legal Publishing. Municipal Code of Chicago 7-12-140 – License Required A single minimum fine is six times the $5 annual fee for a sterilized dog, so if your license has lapsed, renewing is cheaper than waiting for a citation.
