Chicago Driver’s Test: Documents, Road Test, and Fees

At a Chicago driver’s test, you’ll complete a document check, a vision screening, a 35-question written exam, and a behind-the-wheel road test at an Illinois Secretary of State facility. Every Chicago-area facility requires an appointment, so booking comes first. The specifics on documents, your vehicle, and vision requirements wash out more applicants than the driving itself, so most of your preparation happens before you ever get behind the wheel.

Book Your Appointment Before You Go

Walk-ins don’t get tested in Chicago. Every Secretary of State facility in the city and suburbs requires an appointment for driver’s license services, including the in-car road test.1Illinois Secretary of State. Skip the Line Book through the Skip-the-Line system on the Secretary of State’s website or by calling the facility directly. The Chicago Flagship Center at 125 W. Monroe St. handles first-time license issuance, written tests, and vision screenings.2Illinois Secretary of State. Find a DMV Service – Chicago Flagship Center Not every office handles every transaction, so use the facility finder to confirm the location near you offers road tests before you book.

Arrive on time and check in at reception with your confirmation. Staff route you through document review first, then the vision screening, then the written exam, and finally the road test.

Documents to Bring

What you need depends on whether you’re applying for a REAL ID (gold star, required since May 2025 to board domestic flights or enter secure federal buildings) or a standard Illinois license, which still works for driving but carries a “Federal Limits Apply” notation.3Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID

For a REAL ID, bring one document from each of three groups: identity and citizenship (birth certificate, U.S. passport, or naturalization certificate), proof of your Social Security number, and two documents proving Illinois residency.4Illinois Secretary of State. REAL ID Document Checklist Residency proofs include a bank statement dated within 90 days, a utility bill, a lease, or official government mail showing your name and current address. A standard license has lighter documentation requirements.

Your application also requires your legal name, date of birth, address, and Social Security number. Applicants without a Social Security number because of immigration status can still get a standard license by providing documentation of their presence in the country or proof of Illinois residency exceeding one year, along with a passport or consular ID from their home country.5Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Code 625 ILCS 5/6-106 – Application for License or Instruction Permit

You’ll fill out a health questionnaire at the facility covering loss-of-consciousness conditions, physical or mental conditions that could affect driving, and substance use that impairs you behind the wheel.6Legal Information Institute (Cornell Law School). Illinois Admin Code tit 92, pt 1030, app A – Questions Asked of a Drivers License Applicant A “yes” to any of those triggers a requirement for a physician’s statement before the state issues a license, so if you know you’ll need to answer yes, obtain that statement in advance.

Vehicle and Insurance You Supply

Illinois does not provide a car for the road test. You bring one, and it has to pass a basic equipment check before the examiner will get in. The vehicle must have current registration, valid insurance, and working safety equipment: headlights, brake lights, and turn signals. If anything fails inspection, the test doesn’t start.

Illinois requires minimum liability insurance of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $20,000 for property damage.7Illinois Department of Insurance. Auto Insurance Shopping Guide Bring proof of insurance to the facility. Standard rental cars often cause problems because their insurance documentation or safety equipment doesn’t meet testing requirements. Some Chicago driving schools offer road-test-ready vehicles with dual controls and proper documentation if you have no suitable car, though they charge a premium.

Vision Screening

You need at least 20/40 visual acuity with both eyes open, with or without corrective lenses, and a binocular peripheral field of at least 140 degrees.8Legal Information Institute (Cornell Law School). Illinois Admin Code tit 92, 1030.70 – Drivers License Testing/Vision Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them. Passing with corrective lenses puts a restriction on your license requiring you to wear them while driving.

If your vision falls short of 20/40, the state may issue a restricted license depending on how close you are, or may require an eye doctor’s report before proceeding. Updating your prescription before the appointment is cheaper than failing the screening and rescheduling.

Written Knowledge Test

The written exam has 35 questions: 15 on traffic sign identification and 20 on traffic laws and safe driving practices, in multiple-choice or true-false format.9Illinois Secretary of State. Illinois Rules of the Road Workbook The free Rules of the Road workbook covers everything on the test and is available online or at any Secretary of State facility.

Topics include right-of-way rules, pavement markings, speed limits in different zones, and the meaning of various signs.10Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Code 625 ILCS 5/6-109 – Examination of Applicants Sign identification is where most people stumble, especially the less common regulatory and warning signs. Study shapes and colors, not just wording. A yellow diamond means something different from a yellow pentagon, and the test assumes you know that.

The Road Test

The road test puts you in real traffic with an examiner evaluating how you handle it. You’ll need to demonstrate parallel parking, backing up in a straight line, and three-point turns. Parallel parking eliminates the most applicants. Depending on the facility, you’ll park on the road or between cones in the lot, and you need to end up within 18 inches of the curb without hitting anything.

Beyond the set maneuvers, the examiner watches whether you signal before lane changes and turns, whether you check blind spots by actually turning your head, whether you stop completely behind the limit line, and whether you keep an appropriate speed. Failing to look over your shoulder when merging is one of the most common deductions. A rearview camera is fine as a supplement, but it can’t be your primary tool for backing up during the test.

The examiner gives verbal directions throughout, so follow them precisely. If you miss a turn, don’t make an illegal U-turn; the examiner can adjust the route. Automatic failures are a traffic violation, any action that forces the examiner to intervene for safety, or anything that endangers other drivers. At that point the test ends immediately.

If You Fail

Fail the written or road test, and you can try again the same day during normal business hours.11Legal Information Institute (Cornell Law School). Illinois Admin Code tit 92, 1030.86 – Multiple Attempts – Written and/or Road Tests One exception: if the examiner determines you were a danger to public safety during your first road test attempt, no same-day retry. And no third road test attempt on the same day regardless.

Fail the road test six times, and you can’t take a seventh attempt until you submit a favorable medical report from a physician.11Legal Information Institute (Cornell Law School). Illinois Admin Code tit 92, 1030.86 – Multiple Attempts – Written and/or Road Tests If you’ve already filed a favorable medical report within the previous 90 days, you’re exempt from filing a new one.

  • Standard 4-year license: $30
  • 8-year license: $60
  • Ages 18 to 20: $5
  • Ages 69 to 80: $5
  • Ages 81 to 86: $2
  • Age 87 and older: free

Facilities accept credit cards, checks, cashier’s checks, and money orders, with a service fee on credit card transactions.13Illinois Secretary of State. Payment Information Not all locations take cash, so confirm with yours.

When you pass, your old instruction permit is invalidated and you receive a temporary paper license on the spot, valid for 90 days as both a driving credential and ID. The permanent card arrives by mail within 15 business days through the state’s Central Issuance process.14Illinois Secretary of State. Drivers License and State ID Card Information

Extra Steps for Teen Applicants

Applicants under 18 face several additional requirements. You can get an instruction permit at 15, but only if you’re enrolled in or within 30 days of starting an approved driver education course.15Illinois Secretary of State. Instruction Permit Requirements The permit is valid for two years and must be held for at least nine months before you can test for a license.

During the permit period, a teen can only drive with a parent, legal guardian, or supervising adult who is at least 21, holds a valid license, and has at least one year of driving experience. A parent or guardian must certify at least 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice, including 10 hours at night. Permit holders under 18 also face a nighttime driving curfew that prohibits driving after 11:00 p.m. on weekends.

Adults 18 and older follow a simpler path: get an instruction permit, practice with a licensed driver aged 21 or older in the passenger seat, and schedule the road test when ready. Adult permits are valid for 12 months, with no mandatory holding period before testing.

Testing Accommodations

If a medical condition or disability affects how you take the written or road test, request accommodations by completing the Testing Accommodation Request Form and submitting documentation that verifies your condition.16Illinois Secretary of State. Testing Accommodation Request Form For Chicago locations, email the completed form to the designated accommodations coordinator before your appointment. Each test you need accommodations for requires its own form, so a request for the written exam and a request for the road test are separate submissions.
