If you owned a vehicle, boat, trailer, livestock, or business equipment in Christian County, Missouri on January 1, you owe personal property tax on it for that year. The Christian County personal property tax runs on two deadlines: your assessment list is due to the County Assessor by March 1, and the tax bill from the County Collector must be paid by December 31. Miss either one and the penalties start adding up.
What You Have to List
Missouri law requires every owner of tangible personal property on January 1 to list it for taxation that year.1Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 137.075 – What Property Liable for Taxes In practice, that means passenger cars, trucks, motorcycles, trailers, boats, outboard motors, mobile homes not assessed as real estate, livestock, and poultry. Business owners also list machinery, commercial equipment, office furniture, and business-use vehicles.
Household goods, furniture, clothing, and personal-use items inside your home are exempt.2Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 137.100 – Certain Property Exempt From Taxes Your couch, television, and jewelry stay off the form. The tax goes after titled vehicles, watercraft, livestock, and business assets, not everyday belongings.
How the Bill Is Calculated
Missouri does not tax personal property on its full market value. The assessor applies an assessment percentage to the item’s true value, and local tax rates are then applied to that smaller assessed figure. For most personal property, the assessment rate is 33.33 percent.3Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 137.115 – Real and Personal Property Assessment Percentages A $15,000 car produces an assessed value of about $5,000, and the local levy is calculated on that $5,000.
Several categories receive reduced rates:3Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 137.115 – Real and Personal Property Assessment Percentages
- Livestock and poultry: 12 percent of true value
- Farm machinery: 12 percent of true value
- Grain and unmanufactured crops: one-half of one percent of true value
- Historic motor vehicles and certain older aircraft: 5 percent of true value
A $50,000 tractor assessed at 12 percent carries a $6,000 assessed value instead of the roughly $16,667 it would carry at the standard rate.
Filing the Assessment List by March 1
The Christian County Assessor mails forms to known residents each year. Your completed list must reach the assessor by March 1.4Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 137.280 – Failure to Deliver List, Penalty, Exceptions You can return it by mail to the Christian County Courthouse at 100 W. Church Street, Room 301, Ozark, MO 65721, or file through the assessor’s online portal.5Christian County Assessor. Christian County Assessor – Personal Property
For each vehicle, include the year, make, model, and full Vehicle Identification Number from the title or dashboard. Boats, trailers, and livestock need enough description for the office to assign a correct value. Confirm your mailing address so the bill reaches you in November.
New residents who did not receive a form can pick one up at the assessor’s office or call (417) 582-4320 to request one.5Christian County Assessor. Christian County Assessor – Personal Property Not receiving a form in the mail does not excuse the filing. If you owned taxable property on January 1, you owe the list.
What Happens If You Miss March 1
March 1 is not a cliff. Between March 1 and April 1, the assessor sends a second notice to everyone who was mailed a form but never returned it. If you file before May 1 after that second notice, the late penalty does not apply.4Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 137.280 – Failure to Deliver List, Penalty, Exceptions This grace period is the most overlooked piece of the process.
Once May 1 passes without a filing, the assessor adds a penalty to the tax bill based on the assessed value of the unreported property:4Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 137.280 – Failure to Deliver List, Penalty, Exceptions
- $0 to $1,000 assessed value: $15
- $1,001 to $2,000: $25
- $2,001 to $3,000: $35
- $3,001 to $4,000: $45
- $4,001 to $5,000: $55
- $5,001 to $6,000: $65
- $6,001 to $7,000: $75
- $7,001 to $8,000: $85
- $8,001 to $9,000: $95
- $9,001 and above: $105
The assessor must waive the penalty in specific situations: the taxpayer was in military service outside Missouri, the list was mailed on time but never received (postmark required), the assessor’s office failed to mail a form, or county error caused the missed deadline.4Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 137.280 – Failure to Deliver List, Penalty, Exceptions If any of these fit, call the assessor and explain before the penalty is final.
Paying the Bill by December 31
The Christian County Collector mails tax bills in November, and payment is due by December 31. You can pay through the county’s online portal by credit card or e-check, pay in person at the courthouse, or mail a check. However you pay, the payment must be received or postmarked by December 31.
A common and expensive misunderstanding: your mortgage escrow does not cover this bill. Escrow accounts handle real estate taxes, not personal property taxes. If you assume the lender is paying it, you will owe late penalties when December 31 passes.
Bills unpaid after December 31 become delinquent on January 1. Missouri law lets the collector add statutory interest and penalties monthly, so a balance left for several months grows well beyond its original amount. Prolonged delinquency can produce a tax lien and will block vehicle registration and title transfers. If your November bill never arrives, call the collector’s office for the amount owed. Not getting a bill does not cancel the debt.
The Receipt You Need for License Plates
After you pay, the collector issues a paid personal property tax receipt. Missouri requires it when you renew license plates or register a new vehicle with the Department of Revenue.6Missouri Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle Titling and Registration Keep a copy within reach rather than filed away for the year.
If you are new to Missouri or had no assessable property the prior year, you need a statement of non-assessment (sometimes called a tax waiver) instead. Request it from the Christian County Assessor’s office. The Department of Revenue accepts the waiver in place of a paid receipt when titling or registering a vehicle.6Missouri Department of Revenue. No Proration When You Sell a Vehicle
Missouri personal property tax has no proration. If you owned a vehicle on January 1, you owe the full year’s tax on it even if you sold it in February. If you bought a car on January 2, you owe nothing on it until the following year.1Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 137.075 – What Property Liable for Taxes A November bill for a vehicle you traded in during the spring is legitimate, and you still owe it.
Appealing a Valuation You Think Is Too High
If the assessor overvalued your property, you have the right to appeal in writing to the Christian County Board of Equalization.7Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 137.385 – Appeal to County Board of Equalization Bring evidence: recent sale prices for comparable vehicles, documentation of mechanical problems or damage, or a professional appraisal for unusual property. If the board rules against you, you can take the matter further to the Missouri State Tax Commission, a more formal process involving a hearing.
Rules for Military Personnel
Missouri residents on active duty stationed outside the state still owe personal property tax to their home Missouri county, treated the same as any other resident. The rule reverses for service members stationed in Christian County whose home of record is another state: their personal property is not taxable in Missouri, and the collector can issue a certificate of no tax due so vehicles can be registered locally.8Missouri State Tax Commission. As an Active Member of the Military, Do I Have to Pay Property Taxes? Military spouses receive similar protection under the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act. And if service outside Missouri caused you to miss the March 1 deadline, the assessor must waive the late penalty.4Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Deducting the Tax on Your Federal Return
Christian County personal property tax is deductible on your federal return because it is based on the value of the property and charged annually.9Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 503, Deductible Taxes Claim it on Schedule A of Form 1040 in the year you actually pay. A bill paid in December 2025 goes on your 2025 return.
The deduction falls under the state and local tax (SALT) cap. For 2026, the combined limit for state income taxes, real estate taxes, and personal property taxes is $40,000 for most filers, or $20,000 if married filing separately.9Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 503, Deductible Taxes Higher-income filers face a phaseout that can pull the cap back toward $10,000. The deduction only helps if you itemize and your total itemized deductions exceed the standard deduction.
