City of Milwaukee Parking Rules: Night Permits, Winter Bans, and Tows

Milwaukee parking rules prohibit overnight street parking between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday unless you have a night parking permit or temporary permission, and from December through March the city adds alternate-side rules on top. Sunday mornings are the one break. Fines start at $35 for a meter and climb quickly from there, and a vehicle with five unpaid citations more than 60 days old can now be towed whether it is parked legally or not.

Overnight Parking and Night Permits

No vehicle may park on a Milwaukee street between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., Monday through Saturday, without a night parking permit or a temporary night parking permission. Sunday overnight is open: no permit required between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. that one morning of the week.1City of Milwaukee. Parking Regulations

If you park on the street regularly, buy a permit. Prices run from $1 for a single night up to $55 for a full year, with monthly ($10), trimester ($20), and weekly ($5) options in between.2City of Milwaukee. Night Parking Permit Permits are electronic. There is no sticker to display, because enforcement officers scan license plates, so the plate you enter at purchase has to match the vehicle exactly.

For occasional situations, like a visitor staying over or an unusual late night, you can request up to three free temporary night parking permissions in any 30-day period through the city’s online portal.3City of Milwaukee. Temporary Night Parking Permission That cap is firm. Three nights in 30 days is not a substitute for a permit if you need the street every week.

Permits can be purchased online or in person at several city locations, including City Hall and Milwaukee Police District stations.4City of Milwaukee. Night Parking Permits

A state-issued disabled parking hangtag does not cover you overnight. You need a separate Special Disabled Night Permit, which is free, lasts a year, and requires your vehicle registration, driver’s license, a copy of the hangtag, and the hangtag’s DMV registration.4City of Milwaukee. Night Parking Permits Permanent disabled plates are different; with those, no night permit is required.

Winter Alternate-Side Parking

From December 1 through March 1, overnight parking shifts to an alternate-side system, and the permit alone is not enough.1City of Milwaukee. Parking Regulations You have to be on the correct side of the street for the calendar date:

  • Even-numbered dates: park on the side with even-numbered house addresses.
  • Odd-numbered dates: park on the side with odd-numbered house addresses.

The detail that trips people up is timing. The switch happens before midnight, not in the morning. If it is January 14 (even), you should be on the even side right now, and before midnight you need to move to the odd side for January 15.1City of Milwaukee. Parking Regulations Waiting until you leave for work is how most winter tickets are written.

Outside the December 1 to March 1 window, permit holders can park on either side overnight.

Winter violations escalate fast:1City of Milwaukee. Parking Regulations

  • First violation: $50
  • Second violation: $100
  • Third and beyond: $150, and the vehicle becomes eligible for towing

Snow Emergencies

A snow emergency is a separate trigger, declared by the Commissioner of Public Works when snowfall in a 24-hour period creates a serious hazard. Once declared, it stays in effect for up to 72 hours or until plowing is complete.1City of Milwaukee. Parking Regulations During the emergency, parking is prohibited on through highways and designated bus routes so plows can get through.

Daytime Parking, Meters, and Distance Rules

At metered spots, time limits vary by location, and you must leave when your time is up. Moving one space over on the same block to restart the clock does not work; the city prohibits re-parking in the same block after a meter expires. A meter violation is a $35 base fine regardless of whether the posted limit was 15 minutes or several hours.5City of Milwaukee. Parking Citation Types

Wisconsin state law sets the distance rules Milwaukee enforces:6Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Wisconsin Statutes Chapter 346 Rules of the Road

  • At least 10 feet from a fire hydrant.
  • At least 15 feet from the nearest edge of a crosswalk.
  • At least 4 feet clear of driveways and alley entrances.

Parking within 15 feet of a crosswalk is a $40 ticket. So is parking in an intersection, in a safety zone, double parking, or facing the wrong direction on a street.5City of Milwaukee. Parking Citation Types These are flat fines; they do not grow over time the way meter violations can, but they land higher than most people expect.

What Tickets Cost and What Happens If You Ignore Them

Parking fines run from $30 to $100, with most common violations between $35 and $40. A few, like an unregistered vehicle, carry a $100 base fine.5City of Milwaukee. Parking Citation Types

Payment is due within 14 days. After that, many violations add a $5 surcharge. At 28 days, additional increases kick in for certain violations. At 58 days, the city can place a hold on your Wisconsin vehicle registration, blocking plate renewal until the ticket is cleared. At 80 days, the debt goes to a collection contractor, and the state may intercept your Wisconsin income tax refund to cover it.7City of Milwaukee. Parking Citations

You can pay online, by phone at (414) 344-0840, at a 24-hour kiosk inside any Police District station, in person at a Violations Bureau, or by mail. Card payments carry a $2.00 transaction fee.7City of Milwaukee. Parking Citations If your unpaid tickets total $100 or more, you can request a payment plan at the same phone number, though anyone who has previously defaulted on a plan is not eligible for a new one. To challenge a ticket rather than pay it, call (414) 344-0840 to schedule an appearance with the Parking Citation Review Manager at the city tow lot.8Milwaukee Municipal Court. Parking Tickets

The Habitual Violator Rule

As of January 1, 2026, a vehicle with five or more citations that are 60 days past due can be towed from any public street, highway, or city-owned parking facility, even when it is parked legally at the moment.7City of Milwaukee. Parking Citations Recovery requires paying all towing and storage fees plus either clearing every outstanding citation or scheduling a municipal court appearance. A payment plan set up before the 60-day mark is the clean way to stay out of this.

If Your Car Is Towed

Towing costs $150, with storage adding $25 per calendar day.9City of Milwaukee. Tow Lot The lot is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., closed Sunday. A Friday night tow can mean two extra days of storage before you can retrieve the vehicle.

To get your car back, bring a valid driver’s license, proof of liability insurance showing the carrier, insured person, and vehicle details including VIN, and payment in full for towing and storage.9City of Milwaukee. Tow Lot If you don’t have a driver’s license, bring a valid state-issued photo ID along with someone licensed who can drive the car off the lot.

If someone else is picking up the vehicle, they need their own driver’s license, a notarized letter from you authorizing the retrieval and identifying the vehicle by color, make, model, VIN, plate number, and tow number, plus a copy of your ID.9City of Milwaukee. Tow Lot The notarization is strict. A handwritten note will not get the car released. If the tow was under the habitual violator ordinance, all qualifying past-due citations must also be paid or a court date scheduled before release.
