Class Action Attorneys in Los Angeles: Firms, Fees, and Deadlines

Class action attorneys in Los Angeles fall into two camps: plaintiff-side firms that bring cases on behalf of workers, consumers, and investors, and defense-side firms that represent the companies being sued. The strongest names in the region specialize by subject matter — securities fraud, wage-and-hour, data privacy, institutional abuse, or employment defense — and almost all of them work on contingency for plaintiffs, meaning class members pay nothing out of pocket and the lawyers are paid from any recovery, usually as a percentage of the settlement fund.

Plaintiff-Side Firms Known for Class Actions

The plaintiff bar in Los Angeles is deep, and the right firm depends on the type of claim.

Securities Fraud

Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP is the dominant name in securities class actions on the West Coast. The firm is headquartered in San Diego with roughly 200 lawyers across ten offices, and it ranked first in the ISS Securities Class Action Services 2025 report, recovering more than $916 million for investors that year and $8.4 billion over the 2021 through 2025 period.1Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP. Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP Recent results include a $434 million settlement against Under Armour, a $179 million settlement against Acadia Healthcare (final approval granted May 2026), a $126.3 million mid-trial settlement against Alta Mesa Resources, and a $100 million settlement against Wells Fargo over board oversight failures. The firm is currently leading a class action against Disney alleging the company misled investors about Disney+ subscriber growth; U.S. District Judge Consuelo B. Marshall reinstated CEO Bob Iger as a defendant in August 2025, and the case is heading toward trial.2Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP. Securities Group of the Year: Robbins Geller

Defense-Side Firms for Employers and Companies

Companies named in Los Angeles class actions have their own specialists.

CDF Labor Law LLP is one of the more focused class action defense operations in California, working exclusively on employment matters. The firm reports having defended more than 250 employment class actions and is one of the few California firms to have tried seven wage-and-hour class actions before judges or juries. Its defense of U.S. Bank in Duran v. U.S. Bank National Association ran over a decade: CDF successfully appealed a trial judgment that relied on statistical sampling, won class decertification at the California Supreme Court in 2014, then defeated a second certification attempt in 2018 by attacking the plaintiffs’ survey methodology.9CDF Labor Law LLP. Burkhalter Kessler Clement & George LLP (BKCG) handles employment defense including PAGA claims, discrimination, and wage-and-hour class actions, with trial experience at both the Stanley Mosk and Spring Street courthouses. In Ralphs v. Williams, the firm secured a defense verdict at trial against a plaintiff seeking over $42 million for alleged racial discrimination and harassment.10BKCG Law. Defense strategies at these firms share common threads: challenging class certification by highlighting individualized issues within the class, enforcing arbitration agreements that contain class action waivers, using early discovery and dispositive motions to narrow claims, and conducting workplace investigations to obtain declarations from putative class members.9CDF Labor Law LLP. How Class Action Attorney Fees Work

Class action lawyers almost always work on contingency. There is no hourly bill to the client, and the lawyers only get paid if they recover money. In California, the state Supreme Court settled a long-running debate in Laffitte v. Robert Half International Inc. (2016), holding that trial courts may calculate attorney fees as a percentage of the total settlement fund rather than being limited to the lodestar method, which multiplies hours worked by a reasonable hourly rate. Courts have discretion to use either method and may perform a lodestar “cross-check” on a percentage-based fee to test reasonableness, but they are not required to.11Sheppard Mullin. California Supreme Court Approves Attorney Fee Awards Calculated Based Upon Percentage Class Action Common Fund

The Laffitte settlement itself is a useful benchmark. The deal was $19 million and the fee was capped at one-third of the recovery. The trial court approved $6.33 million in fees, which reflected a lodestar multiplier of roughly 2.0 to 2.1, a figure the Supreme Court found reasonable given the case’s complexity and the risk that class counsel would recover nothing.12SCOCAblog. Laffitte v. Robert Half International Inc. A one-third fee is a common ceiling in California class action practice.

Federal courts in the Ninth Circuit have been pushing back on fee awards they consider excessive. Appellate panels have vacated awards where the multiplier was deemed too high or where fees dwarfed the amount actually distributed to class members.13Class Actions Brief. Courts Scrutinize High Attorneys’ Fees Awards in Class Action Settlements That scrutiny matters to class members because the fee comes out of the common fund, and a smaller fee leaves more for the class.

What It Costs You to Be Part of a Class Action

Nothing, in almost all cases. Attorney fees come out of the recovery, not out of class members’ pockets.14TZ Legal. Class Actions 101 You do not sign a retainer. You do not pay a filing fee. Most class actions are “opt-out” cases, meaning eligible members are included automatically without needing to sign up.15ClassAction.org. How to Join a Class Action Once a settlement is reached, you typically get a notice by mail or email explaining what happened, how much you might receive, and how to file a claim. Filing usually means completing a simple form by a stated deadline.

Some wage-and-hour class actions under federal law are structured as “opt-in,” which requires workers to affirmatively choose to participate. If you do nothing and stay in an opt-out case, you are bound by the outcome and cannot later file your own individual lawsuit on the same claims. If you want to preserve the right to sue individually, you must formally opt out during the designated window.15ClassAction.org. How to Join a Class Action

Settlements have to be approved by the court. California Rules of Court, Rule 3.769 requires preliminary approval, then notice to class members, then a final fairness hearing where the court independently evaluates whether the deal is fair before entering judgment.16California Courts. Rule 3.769 According to the Judicial Council of California, 89 percent of certified class actions end in settlement.17Shouse Law Group. Class Action Lawsuit

Matching the Attorney to the Claim

Not every firm handles every kind of case. Knowing which bucket your claim falls into will narrow the search quickly.

Wage-and-Hour and Misclassification

These are the most common employment class actions in Los Angeles. Allegations typically involve misclassifying workers as exempt or as independent contractors, failing to pay overtime, denying meal and rest breaks, shaving time off the clock, and issuing inaccurate pay statements.18Wilson Turner Kosmo. Class Actions California’s overtime rules are stricter than federal law: time-and-a-half kicks in after eight hours in a single day, not just after 40 hours in a week, and double time starts after 12 hours.17Shouse Law Group. Class Action Lawsuit Statutory penalties under Labor Code § 226.3 run $250 per employee per pay period, which multiplies fast across a class.19Ogletree Deakins. Avoiding California Wage Hour Class Action Suits

Independent contractor disputes are evaluated under California’s ABC test: a worker is presumed to be an employee unless the hiring entity can prove the worker is free from the company’s control, performs work outside the company’s usual business, and is independently established in that trade.20MSD Lawyers. PAGA Claims

California’s Private Attorneys General Act is a parallel track to employment class actions. A single employee can sue on behalf of the state to collect civil penalties for Labor Code violations, acting as a stand-in for the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency. No class certification is required, and PAGA claims cannot be forced into individual arbitration the way class claims can.21Legal Professionals Inc. Class Action vs. PAGA: What’s the Difference? After the 2024 reforms, the employee share of recovered penalties is 35 percent (up from 25 percent), with the remainder going to the state.22Sheppard Mullin. Consumer Protection and Data Privacy

Consumer class actions in Los Angeles cover false advertising, deceptive labeling, Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) violations, and claims under Business & Professions Code § 17200 (the Unfair Competition Law) and the Consumer Legal Remedies Act.18Wilson Turner Kosmo. Class Actions A Lex Machina report released in April 2026 found that federal class action filings spiked in 2025 after nearly a decade of stability, driven largely by data breach, digital commerce, and online accessibility cases, with the Central District of California among the most active venues.23Law360. Consumer Cases Drive Class Action Spike, Report Says

The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) gives consumers a private right of action when their unencrypted personal information is exposed due to a business’s failure to maintain reasonable security, with statutory damages of $100 to $750 per person per incident and no proof of actual harm required.24Skadden. Securities Fraud

Securities class actions typically allege that publicly traded companies misled investors through false or misleading statements, causing stock price drops when the truth came out. The Central District of California sees a steady flow of these cases given the number of publicly traded companies headquartered or doing significant business in Southern California. Robbins Geller is the clear market leader, but these cases are led by a relatively small group of specialized plaintiff firms rather than general employment or consumer shops.

Deadlines That Determine When You Need to Call

Statutes of limitations control how long you have to bring a claim, and missing a deadline usually ends the case before it starts. California’s deadlines vary by claim type:

The discovery rule can delay the start of the clock when the harm was not immediately apparent, and the continuing violations doctrine can extend deadlines for ongoing conduct like repeated harassment or wage theft.27Rez Law. Statute of Limitations for Employment Law Claims COVID-19 emergency rules also tolled certain limitations periods between April 6, 2020, and October 1, 2020.28California Courts Self-Help. Most plaintiff-side class action firms in Los Angeles offer free initial consultations. Because the attorneys are paid only if the case produces a recovery, there is no financial risk to reaching out early. The real risk is waiting past a deadline you did not know was running.
