Click It or Ticket in Texas is the state’s annual two-week seat belt enforcement blitz, and in 2026 it runs from May 18 through May 31. During that window, state troopers and local officers run saturation patrols aimed specifically at unbuckled drivers and passengers, with the surrounding media campaign starting as early as May 4 and continuing through June 11.1Traffic Safety Marketing. Click It or Ticket Base fines start at $25, but once court costs are added the total you actually pay is usually several times that number.
What to Expect During the 2026 Enforcement Window
Click It or Ticket is a nationwide initiative coordinated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and Texas runs one of the most aggressive versions in the country. Expect patrols on highways, farm-to-market roads, and city streets at all hours, including overnight shifts aimed at late-night drivers, who tend to buckle up less often. Officers treat seat belt compliance as a top enforcement priority during this stretch alongside speed and impaired driving.
Why an Officer Can Pull You Over Just for a Seat Belt
Texas is a primary enforcement state. An officer can stop you solely because someone in your vehicle appears unbelted, with no separate traffic violation required. That is true year-round, but during the campaign it is the main thing patrol officers are watching for. A quick glance through your windshield at a red light is enough to start a stop.
Who Has to Be Buckled
Anyone 15 or older in a passenger vehicle must wear a seat belt if their seat is equipped with one.2Texas Statutes. Texas Transportation Code 545.413 – Safety Belts; Offense Front seat, back seat, middle seat — the location does not matter. This applies to cars, trucks, SUVs, and passenger vans designed for 15 or fewer people.
Passengers 15 and older who ride unbuckled get their own citation; the ticket goes to them, not the driver. The driver, however, is separately on the hook if they allow a child between 8 and 16 to ride unbelted. A belted driver with an unbuckled 12-year-old in the back can still be ticketed.
Children under eight must ride in a child safety seat unless they are already taller than four feet nine inches, and the seat has to be installed and used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.3Texas Statutes. Texas Transportation Code 545.412 – Child Passenger Safety Seat Systems; Offense
One detail that catches people: buckling is not enough on its own. The lap belt has to sit low and snug across your hips, and the shoulder strap has to cross the center of your chest and rest on your shoulder — not tucked under your arm or behind your back. Officers can cite you for improper positioning the same as for no belt at all.
What a Ticket Actually Costs
Base fines in Texas depend on who was unbelted:
- Adult or teen (15+) riding unbelted: $25 to $502Texas Statutes. Texas Transportation Code 545.413 – Safety Belts; Offense
- Driver allowing a child 8 to 16 to ride unbelted: $100 to $200
- Driver with a child under 8 not in a proper safety seat: $25 to $2503Texas Statutes. Texas Transportation Code 545.412 – Child Passenger Safety Seat Systems; Offense
Those base fines are misleading on their own. Court costs, administrative fees, and processing charges stack on top and often exceed the fine itself. In Travis County, the total cost of an adult seat belt ticket is $186, and the total for a driver who allowed a minor to ride unbelted reaches $286.4Travis County. Traffic Ticket Fines, Court Costs, DSC Information Totals vary by county because each one sets its own court fees, but expect the final bill to be several times the base fine wherever you are cited.
How to Get a Click It or Ticket Citation Dismissed
Texas offers two realistic paths to avoid paying the full amount.
For a standard adult seat belt violation, you may be eligible to take a state-approved seat belt safety course, similar in concept to defensive driving but focused on restraint laws. Court approval is typically required, and you generally cannot have been cited for another offense during the same stop. Eligibility is up to the court listed on your citation, and individual judges have some discretion.
For a child safety seat violation under Section 545.412, there is a specific statutory defense. If you did not have a child safety seat in the vehicle at the time, were not cited for any other offense, and your vehicle was not in a crash, the charge can be dismissed by showing the court that you later obtained the correct safety seat.5State of Texas. Points, Insurance, and Ignoring the Ticket
A Texas seat belt ticket does not add points to your driving record. It is classified as a non-moving violation, the lowest severity category for traffic offenses, and a single citation on its own is unlikely to raise your insurance premiums. Repeat tickets create a pattern some insurers notice when reviewing an overall record.
The real risk is doing nothing. Ignoring a seat belt citation can lead to a warrant and additional fees that quickly dwarf the original ticket. Handle it promptly through payment, a safety course, or a court appearance.
Medical and Job-Based Exemptions
A narrow set of situations provide a legal defense. The most useful one: a written statement from a licensed physician saying you should not wear a seat belt for medical reasons. You can present that statement to the court within 10 days of the citation.2Texas Statutes. Texas Transportation Code 545.413 – Safety Belts; Offense Telling the officer about a condition during the stop without documentation will not prevent the ticket.
Other recognized defenses cover people whose jobs require constantly getting in and out of a vehicle while performing their duties:
- U.S. Postal Service carriers actively servicing mailboxes from a vehicle
- Newspaper delivery workers making frequent stops
- Utility company employees reading meters or doing similar frequent-stop work
- Solid waste vehicle operators and passengers whose duties require frequent entry and exit
- Operators of farm-registered commercial vehicles under 48,000 pounds gross weight
These defenses are narrow. You have to actually be performing the described duty at the time, not simply employed in that field.
