In unincorporated Cobb County, alcohol sales hours depend on what you’re buying and where you drink it. Packaged beer and wine run on the widest schedule, packaged liquor on a tighter one, and bars and restaurants follow their own clock. Sunday is more restricted across the board, and the cities inside the county (Marietta, Smyrna, Kennesaw, Acworth) set their own hours that can look nothing like the county’s.
Packaged Beer and Wine
Convenience stores, supermarkets, and other off-premises retailers in unincorporated Cobb County can sell beer and wine from 6:00 AM to 2:00 AM Monday through Friday. Saturday hours are shorter: 6:00 AM to midnight.1Cobb County Georgia. Alcohol, Health Spa, Door-to-Door, Pawn, Precious Metal Dealer Permits
The 2:00 AM weekday cutoff bleeds into the next calendar day. A purchase at 1:30 AM Wednesday is legal because it falls inside the Tuesday sales window. That carryover matters if you’re used to the stricter liquor-store clock.
Packaged Liquor
Licensed liquor stores selling distilled spirits run on a narrower schedule: 8:00 AM to 11:45 PM, Monday through Saturday.1Cobb County Georgia. Alcohol, Health Spa, Door-to-Door, Pawn, Precious Metal Dealer Permits This is set by state rule: liquor retailers cannot open before 8:00 AM or sell after 11:45 PM any day, though staff may be in the store from 6:00 AM for setup.2Georgia Secretary of State. GAC Subject 560-2-3 Retailer/Retail Consumption Dealer
So if you need beer or wine at 7:00 AM on a Tuesday, the grocery store can sell to you. A bottle of whiskey has to wait until 8:00. And a late-night six-pack at 1:00 AM is fine on a weekday, but the liquor store closed over an hour earlier.
Bars and Restaurants
On-premises service at bars, restaurants, and taverns in unincorporated Cobb County runs on these hours:1Cobb County Georgia. Alcohol, Health Spa, Door-to-Door, Pawn, Precious Metal Dealer Permits
- Monday through Friday: 6:00 AM to 2:00 AM
- Saturday: 8:00 AM to 2:55 AM
Saturday is the oddity. Service starts two hours later than weekdays, and the closing time of 2:55 AM is an unusually specific stop that technically falls early Sunday morning.
Sunday Hours
Sunday is the most restricted day of the week, and the rules split between taking a package home and ordering a drink out.
Package Sales
All packaged alcohol in unincorporated Cobb County, whether beer, wine, or liquor, can be sold on Sundays from 12:30 PM to 11:30 PM.1Cobb County Georgia. Alcohol, Health Spa, Door-to-Door, Pawn, Precious Metal Dealer Permits Most retailers’ registers block alcohol transactions before 12:30 PM automatically. Sunday package sales were authorized under Georgia Code ยง 3-3-7, which lets local governments permit them after a voter referendum, and Cobb County voters approved it.3Justia. On-Premises Service and the Brunch Bill
Restaurants and bars with a Sunday sales license can serve from 11:00 AM to midnight on Sundays.1Cobb County Georgia. Alcohol, Health Spa, Door-to-Door, Pawn, Precious Metal Dealer Permits The 11:00 AM start comes from Georgia’s “Brunch Bill,” which took effect in 2018 and lets local governments authorize earlier Sunday service by referendum. To qualify, an establishment must earn at least 50 percent of total annual gross sales from prepared food, or at least 50 percent of gross income from overnight room rentals.3Justia. Georgia Code 3-3-7 – Local Authorization and Regulation of Sales of Alcoholic Beverages on Sunday
A bar that doesn’t meet the food threshold cannot serve on Sunday morning. The 50 percent figure is measured per location, so a chain cannot average a slow spot against a food-heavy flagship to qualify it.
Election Day and Christmas
Georgia no longer bans alcohol sales on election days. Sales are legal in jurisdictions that allow alcohol unless the local government has specifically prohibited them by ordinance. One rule still applies statewide: selling alcohol within 250 feet of a polling place on a primary or election day is a misdemeanor.4Justia. Georgia Code 3-3-20 – Sale of Alcoholic Beverages on Sundays and Election Days
Christmas Day is different. Georgia law lets counties and cities prohibit alcohol sales on December 25 by ordinance.4Justia. Georgia Code 3-3-20 – Sale of Alcoholic Beverages on Sundays and Election Days Marietta, for one, bans package liquor sales on Christmas Day outright. Check your specific jurisdiction before counting on a December 25 run.
City Limits Change the Rules
All the hours above apply only to unincorporated Cobb County. The incorporated cities set their own schedules and the differences are real. Marietta allows on-premises service from 6:00 AM to 2:55 AM Monday through Saturday, which means Saturday service starts two hours earlier than it does in the unincorporated county. Marietta’s Sunday beer and wine package sales also start at 11:00 AM instead of 12:30 PM.5Municode. Marietta Code of Ordinances – Chapter 8-8 Alcoholic Beverages
Smyrna, Kennesaw, and Acworth each have their own ordinances with their own distinct hours. A store on one side of a city line can operate under completely different rules than a competitor across the street. If you want to know the cutoff where you actually live or do business, call the city clerk rather than relying on the county schedule.
