Front-of-Card Design and Material

The card itself is built from 100% polycarbonate sheets fused under heat and pressure into a solid block whose layers cannot be separated.2Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles. Iconic Colorado It feels noticeably stiffer than older PVC cards and makes a distinct sound when tapped on a hard surface. That rigidity makes the card extremely difficult to delaminate or alter without destroying it.
Security Features on a Genuine Card
Colorado layers several anti-counterfeiting measures on top of the polycarbonate substrate. Knowing what to look for is the difference between accepting a good fake and catching one.
Laser-Engraved Personalization
All demographic information, including the photograph, is laser-engraved directly into the card body rather than printed on the surface. Carbon layers embedded within the polycarbonate react to the laser and release carbon toward the top and bottom of the card, so the personalization sits inside the material.2Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles. This is probably the single most useful feature for spotting fakes: surface-printed counterfeits show ink sitting on top of the card rather than embedded in it.
UV Markings, Raised Print, and Ghost Photo
Both visible and ultraviolet inks are applied in a single pass using Pantone colors selected specifically for this credential.2Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles. Specific cardholder information is also printed in raised form that you can feel by running a finger across the card, and a semitransparent duplicate of the photograph appears elsewhere on the card.1Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. REAL ID Gold Star
A gold star in the upper-right corner marks a Colorado license that meets federal REAL ID standards. As of May 7, 2025, federal agencies require a REAL ID-compliant license or an alternative such as a passport to board domestic commercial flights and enter certain federal facilities.3Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. How To Read the Data Fields
Colorado follows the design standard published by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, which assigns numbered data elements to each field so officials in any state can locate details quickly. The numeral “1” marks the surname; “2” marks the given name.4American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators. The driver’s license number is a nine-digit code formatted as XX-XXX-XXXX, displayed prominently on the front and used for record lookups in the state’s DRIVES database.1Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. The Iconic Credential
Restriction and Endorsement Codes
Coded letters and numbers on the front indicate specific driving conditions or privileges. A corrective-lenses restriction means the holder can be cited for driving without glasses or contacts. A motorcycle endorsement signals the holder passed the separate motorcycle skills evaluation. Violating a license restriction is a class A traffic infraction under Colorado law, carrying a fine between $15 and $100.
Organ Donor Heart
A small heart symbol indicates the holder has registered as an organ donor. The designation is added to the state donor registry and is legally binding under the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act; once you say “yes” at the DMV, the decision cannot be overridden by family after your death. Preferences can be updated at renewal or through the registry directly.
What an Under-21 Card Looks Like
Colorado issues licenses in a vertical (portrait) orientation for anyone under 21, giving retailers, bartenders, and law enforcement an instant visual cue without having to calculate the holder’s age from the birth date.1Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. A minor driver’s license is valid for three years or expires 20 days after the holder’s 21st birthday, whichever comes first.5Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Standard Licenses and IDs After that, the holder becomes eligible for the standard horizontal card.
How Long the Card Stays Valid
Standard adult credentials are valid for three years from the date of issuance.5Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Standard Licenses and IDs Any sample card you’re looking at should show an expiration date within that window of its issue date. A card whose dates fall outside that pattern is worth a second look.
