Colorado Drivers Ed Requirements: Hours, Permit, and License

Colorado’s driver’s ed requirements depend on your age. If you are 15, 16, or 17, you must finish a 30-hour driver education course approved by the Colorado Department of Revenue before you can get an instruction permit. If you are 18, 19, or 20, you can take the same 30-hour course or a shorter 4-hour prequalification driver awareness program. At 21 and older, no classroom course is required at all.1Justia Law. Colorado Code Title 42 – Section 42-2-106

This has been the rule statewide since April 1, 2026, when Colorado replaced its older tiered system. Teens between 15 and a half and 16 used to be able to substitute a shorter awareness class, and those 16 and older could skip driver education entirely. Neither shortcut exists anymore.1Justia Law. Course Hours by Age

The requirements under Colorado Revised Statutes § 42-2-106 break down this way:

  • Ages 15 through 17: a 30-hour driver education course approved by the Colorado Department of Revenue. It can be completed online or in person.
  • Ages 18 through 20: either the 30-hour course or a 4-hour prequalification driver awareness program, also department-approved.
  • Age 21 and older: no classroom education required before applying for a permit.

Online courses are convenient, but choose one that is on the Department of Revenue’s approved list. A certificate from a non-approved provider will not be accepted at the DMV.

When the Course Must Be Completed

Your 30-hour course has to have been completed within six months before you apply for your permit.1Justia Law. Colorado Code Title 42 – Section 42-2-106 Finish the course and then wait too long to visit the DMV, and you will have to take it again. This trips up families who get an eager head start on the classroom work months before the teen is actually ready to go in for a permit.

Behind-the-Wheel Training

The 30-hour course is classroom-style education. Separately, if you are younger than 16 years and 6 months old when you apply for your license, you must also complete six hours of in-car training with an approved third-party driving school.2Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Colorado Permits and First-Time Driver License Apply at 16 and a half or later, and the professional in-car training requirement is waived.

Rural families have an alternative. If your home is more than 30 miles from an approved full-time driving school, a parent, legal guardian, or alternate permit supervisor can provide 12 hours of behind-the-wheel training in place of the school. Those 12 hours are counted on top of the standard supervised driving requirement, so your total logged time becomes 62 hours instead of 50.2Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Supervised Driving Hours You Must Log

Every minor must log at least 50 hours of supervised driving before becoming eligible for a license, and at least 10 of those hours must be at night.3Colorado Department of Transportation. FAQs and Resources The supervising driver must hold a valid license, be at least 21 years old, and sit in the front passenger seat.2Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Colorado Permits and First-Time Driver License

Hours are tracked on the Drive Time Log Sheet, form DR 2324. The supervising adult fills in the date, total drive time, any night-driving time, and their initials after each session.4Colorado Department of Revenue. Drive Time Log Sheet DR 2324 Start the log the day the permit is issued. Reconstructing a year of driving from memory later is painful and often inaccurate.

What to Bring to the DMV for the Permit

Driver education is only one piece of the permit application. When you visit the DMV, you also need:

  • Proof of identity and lawful presence, such as a birth certificate or valid passport.5Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Required Identification Documents to Get Your Permit, Driver License, or Identification Card
  • Your Social Security number, which the DMV verifies electronically.
  • Two proofs of Colorado residency, each showing your full name and current physical address, dated within the past year, and no P.O. boxes.6Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Adult Permit
  • Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship, form DR 2460, signed by a parent or legal guardian in front of a DMV employee or notarized in advance.7Colorado Department of Revenue. Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship
  • Proof of driver education: your certificate for the 30-hour course, or the 4-hour awareness program if you are 18 to 20 and chose that option.

Missing one item means a second trip. Check everything the night before.

Knowledge Test and Permit Fees

Colorado offers the written knowledge test in two formats. The @Home version runs on any desktop or laptop with a webcam, takes random identity photos during the test, and gives you 60 minutes to finish. If you are under 19, an adult older than 19 must serve as proxy and will receive your results by email. Each attempt costs $6.50, and you can retake it up to twice per day.8Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Home Driving Knowledge Tests

To test in person, schedule an appointment through the Colorado DMV website or the myDMV.Colorado.gov portal.9Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Colorado requires a minimum visual acuity of 20/40 in at least one eye.10Department of Revenue – Colorado DMV. FAQ – Driver License Bring glasses or contacts if you wear them.

The permit itself costs $19.00 for a REAL ID-compliant version or $21.50 for a standard non-REAL ID credential.11Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. State DMV Fees You walk out with a temporary paper permit and can start practice driving the same day. The permanent card arrives by mail roughly two weeks later.

From Permit to License

Teens must hold the instruction permit for a full 12 months before applying for a driver’s license.3Colorado Department of Transportation. FAQs and Resources Even if the 50 supervised hours are logged by month three, the application cannot happen until month 12. The permit stays valid for three years, so there is time to spare if more practice is needed.1Justia Law. Colorado Code Title 42 – Section 42-2-106

You must be at least 16 years old to take the road test.2Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Colorado Permits and First-Time Driver License The test is administered by approved third-party driving schools rather than the DMV, so scheduling and payment happen through the school. The test usually runs 20 to 30 minutes and covers starting, stopping, turning, lane changes, obeying signs and signals, and parking. The vehicle you bring must have working lights, signals, mirrors, seat belts, and tires. Bring the permit, your completed drive time log (showing at least 50 hours including 10 at night), and proof of behind-the-wheel training if it applies to you.

Restrictions That Apply After You Get the License

A license issued under age 18 carries built-in restrictions that are not part of driver education but will shape the first year of driving. For the first six months, no passengers under 21 are allowed unless they are immediate family. From six months to one year, one non-family passenger under 21 is permitted. No more than one passenger may sit in the front seat at any time, and rear-seat passengers cannot exceed the number of seat belts available.12Colorado General Assembly. Passenger and Curfew Laws for Minor Drivers13Justia Law. Colorado Code Title 42 – Section 42-2-105.5

During that same first year, driving between midnight and 5:00 a.m. is prohibited unless a parent or legal guardian is in the car, you are traveling to or from work or school (with a signed statement from the employer or school), you are responding to a medical emergency, or you are an emancipated minor.2Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle.
