Colorado Energy Tax Rebates, Credits, and Incentives

Colorado’s energy tax rebates, credits, and incentives fall into four main state programs: a Heat Pump Tax Credit applied as an upfront discount by your contractor, the Colorado Home Energy Rebate Program for income-qualified households, the Innovative Motor Vehicle Credit for electric vehicles, and a 10% credit for residential battery storage. Most of these are handled at the point of sale rather than on your tax return, and the dollar amounts for several of them dropped sharply starting in 2026.

Heat Pump Tax Credit

This is the program most homeowners run into first, and it does not work the way a tax credit normally does. You never claim it yourself. A state-registered contractor claims the credit and passes part of it to you as a discount on your installation invoice.1Colorado Energy Office. Colorado Heat Pump Tax Credits

For equipment installed on or after January 1, 2026, the credit totals are:

  • Air-source heat pump: $1,000 total, with a minimum customer discount of $333
  • Ground-source, water-source, or combined-source heat pump: $2,000 total, with a minimum customer discount of $667
  • Heat pump water heater: $250 total, with a minimum customer discount of $83

Those numbers are much smaller than they were in 2024 and 2025, when air-source systems carried a $1,500 credit, ground-source systems $3,000, and heat pump water heaters $500.1Colorado Energy Office. Colorado Heat Pump Tax Credits Contractors may keep up to two-thirds of the credit value but must pass at least 33.33% to you. Some pass along more to stay competitive, so quotes are worth comparing.

Air-source systems have to be AHRI-matched and designed to meet at least 80% of your home’s annual heating load.1Colorado Energy Office. Colorado Heat Pump Tax Credits The single most important thing to check: your installer has to appear on the Colorado Energy Office’s registered contractor list. If they aren’t registered, the discount doesn’t happen, and there is no way to claim it later on your return. The Energy Office keeps a searchable list on its website.

Colorado Home Energy Rebate Program

Separately from the heat pump credit, the Colorado Energy Office administers a federally funded rebate program with two tracks: Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR) for individual appliances, and Home Efficiency Rebates (HER) for whole-home improvements.2Colorado Energy Office. Colorado Home Energy Rebate Program Unlike the heat pump credit, these rebates depend on your household income.

HEAR household maximums are:

  • Cold climate heat pump for space heating and cooling: up to $8,000
  • Standard heat pump for space heating and cooling: up to $3,000
  • Heat pump water heater: up to $1,750
  • Electric panel upgrade: up to $4,000
  • Insulation, air sealing, and ventilation: up to $1,600

How much of those maximums you actually receive turns on your income. Households below 80% of the area median income (AMI) for their county qualify for 100% of project costs up to the caps. Households between 80% and 150% AMI receive 50% of project costs up to the caps. Above 150% AMI, you don’t qualify for HEAR or HER at all.2Colorado Energy Office. Like the heat pump credit, the rebate is routed through a registered contractor. The contractor handles the application through an online portal and submits a project proposal before work begins. You get a home assessment, pick qualifying upgrades, and sign the proposal before anything is installed.2Colorado Energy Office. Colorado Home Energy Rebate Program

Electric Vehicle Credit

The Innovative Motor Vehicle Credit also shrank for 2026. The base credit is $750 for the purchase or lease of a qualifying new EV with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $80,000 or less.4Colorado Department of Revenue. Income Tax Topics – Innovative Motor Vehicle Credit An extra $2,500 is available for new EVs with an MSRP of $35,000 or less, bringing the maximum state credit on a lower-priced vehicle to $3,250.5Colorado Energy Office. Electric Vehicle Tax Credits The credit was $5,000 as recently as 2024.

Leases must run at least two years to qualify.5Colorado Energy Office. Electric Vehicle Tax Credits Many dealers will accept assignment of the credit, which converts it from a tax-time credit into a price cut at the dealership.

If you don’t assign it, you claim the credit on your Colorado Individual Income Tax Return (Form DR 0104) using Form DR 0617. The form asks for the make, model, model year, VIN, and MSRP, and you attach a copy of the purchase invoice or lease agreement along with proof of permanent Colorado registration.6Colorado Department of Revenue. Innovative Motor Vehicle and Innovative Truck Credit for a Vehicle You Purchased or Leased The credit is applied against your total tax liability, and any excess is refunded. File a separate DR 0617 for each qualifying vehicle.

Residential Battery Storage Credit

A home battery storage system qualifies for a state credit equal to 10% of the purchase price, applied at the point of sale. The seller discounts the invoice by 10% and then applies to the state for reimbursement. The system has to be a commercially available, customer-sited unit capable of retaining, storing, and delivering energy.7Colorado Department of Revenue. Building owners complete Form DR 1307 to certify that the conditions for the credit are met. Tenants who install a qualifying system themselves can also claim it with written approval from the landlord.7Colorado Department of Revenue. Renters and Multifamily Buildings

The rebate program isn’t limited to owner-occupied single-family homes. HEAR rebates for small multifamily buildings opened in 2026, and HER rebates for large multifamily buildings opened the same year. For a large multifamily building to qualify, at least 50% of households in it must meet the income limits. A building serving mostly low-income tenants (below 80% AMI) that achieves 35% or more energy savings can receive up to $8,000 per unit or 80% of project costs, whichever is less.2Colorado Energy Office. Colorado Home Energy Rebate Program

Renters who want to pursue a rebate on their own rather than waiting for the landlord to act need written permission from the property owner first. The registered contractor still files the application, but landlord consent is a prerequisite.

Combining State and Federal Credits

These Colorado programs can potentially stack with federal clean energy credits for the same equipment, but the math takes care. The IRS treats public utility subsidies for installing clean energy property as reducing the qualified expenses you use to calculate federal credits, whether the subsidy comes to you or to your contractor.8Internal Revenue Service. Residential Clean Energy Credit How Colorado’s specific state credits are categorized for that purpose is worth running past a tax professional. Check the current status of the federal Residential Clean Energy Credit and the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit on the IRS website before counting on them for 2026, since both are subject to congressional changes.

How to Claim Each Incentive

Most of these programs don’t involve your tax return at all. Here is where each one actually gets processed:

  • Heat pump tax credit: your registered contractor claims it with the state and applies your discount at installation. You file nothing.1Colorado Energy Office. Colorado Heat Pump Tax Credits
  • Home Energy Rebate Program: your registered contractor submits the application and discounts your project.2Colorado Energy Office. Colorado Home Energy Rebate Program
  • Battery storage credit: the seller applies the 10% discount at purchase.
  • EV credit: claim it on Form DR 0104 using Form DR 0617, or assign it to the dealer for a point-of-sale cut.5Colorado Energy Office. Electric Vehicle Tax Credits

Documentation Worth Keeping

Even when the paperwork is handled for you, keep records in case the Department of Revenue asks later. For heat pump jobs, verify your contractor’s registration on the Energy Office list before signing, and get an invoice showing the AHRI certification for air-source systems and the credit amount applied. For an EV, keep the purchase invoice or lease agreement, the registration, and your copy of Form DR 0617 showing the vehicle’s VIN and MSRP.6Colorado Department of Revenue. Innovative Motor Vehicle and Innovative Truck Credit for a Vehicle You Purchased or Leased For a battery system, hold onto the itemized invoice with model numbers and rated capacity along with Form DR 1307.7Colorado Department of Revenue.
