You can get Colorado food stamps if your household income is at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level, and you apply through the state’s Colorado PEAK portal, the MyCOBenefits mobile app, or your county human services office. The program’s formal name is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The Colorado Department of Human Services runs it statewide, but your county office handles your application, interview, and eligibility decision.1Colorado Department of Human Services. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Colorado also waives the federal asset test, so savings and vehicles don’t disqualify you.2Food and Nutrition Service. Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility
Income Limits for the Current SNAP Year
Colorado uses 200% of the Federal Poverty Level as the gross monthly income cutoff. For the SNAP year running October 2025 through September 2026, the limits are roughly:2Food and Nutrition Service. Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility
- 1 person: $2,608 per month
- 2 people: $3,526
- 3 people: $4,442
- 4 people: $5,358
- 5 people: $6,276
- Each additional person: add $916
Falling under the gross cutoff gets you in the door. The county then calculates your net income after subtracting a standard deduction, 20% of earned income, excess shelter costs, dependent care, and out-of-pocket medical costs over $35 per month for elderly or disabled household members. If your net income exceeds 100% of the Federal Poverty Level, you won’t receive a benefit.3Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Eligibility
You also need to be a Colorado resident with proof of lawful presence or qualified immigrant status. A household is everyone who lives together and buys and prepares food together, with one exception: a married couple sharing a home is always one household, even if they cook separately.
Work Rules If You’re an Adult Without Dependents
If you’re between 18 and 54, physically able to work, and have no dependents, you’re classified as an Able-Bodied Adult Without Dependents (ABAWD). You can only receive SNAP for three months in any 36-month period unless you meet a work requirement of at least 80 hours per month.4Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Work Requirements Those hours can come from paid work, unpaid work, volunteering, a qualifying work program such as SNAP Employment and Training, or any combination.
Exemptions apply if you have a documented disability, are pregnant, care for a child or incapacitated household member, or already meet another program’s work requirements.5Legal Information Institute. 10 CCR 2506-1-4.311 – ABAWD Work Requirements If you lose eligibility, you can regain it by completing 80 hours in a later month.
Documents to Gather Before You Apply
Missing paperwork is the most common reason an application stalls. Have these ready:
- Photo ID for at least one adult in the household
- Social Security numbers for everyone applying
- Proof of your Colorado address, such as a lease, utility bill, or recent mail
- Income verification: pay stubs from the last 30 days, employer statements, or award letters for Social Security, disability, child support, or other unearned income
- Expense records: rent or mortgage statements, utilities, childcare costs, and medical bills for elderly or disabled members
Self-employed? Bring your most recent tax return along with current income and expense records for the business. If you don’t have everything, submit the application anyway. The filing date protects your benefit start date, and your county caseworker will tell you what’s still needed.
How to Apply
Three ways to file:
- Online at the Colorado PEAK portal (colorado.gov/PEAK), which also lets you upload documents and track your case
- Through the MyCOBenefits mobile app on iOS or Android1Colorado Department of Human Services. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
- On paper, downloaded from PEAK or picked up at your county human services office, then returned in person, by mail, or by fax6Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing. Application for Public Assistance

SNAP Application Processing Timeliness You generally qualify if your monthly income is below $150 and you have $100 or less in liquid assets, or if your income and liquid assets together are less than your monthly rent plus utilities.
How Much You’ll Get and When
Your benefit equals the maximum allotment for your household size minus 30% of your net income. Someone with zero net income receives the full maximum. For fiscal year 2026 those maximums are:
- 1 person: $298
- 2 people: $546
- 3 people: $785
- 4 people: $994
- 5 people: $1,183
- 6 people: $1,421
- 7 people: $1,571
- 8 people: $1,789
- Each additional person: add $218
Benefits load onto a Colorado EBT card, also called the Quest card, on a staggered monthly schedule based on the last digit of your Social Security number: SSNs ending in 1 get benefits on the 1st, ending in 2 on the 2nd, continuing through 0, which loads on the 10th.9Colorado Department of Human Services. What SNAP Buys
SNAP covers groceries you prepare and eat at home: produce, meat, fish, dairy, bread, cereal, snacks, non-alcoholic drinks, and seeds or plants that grow food.10Food and Nutrition Service. What Can SNAP Buy It does not cover:
- Alcohol or tobacco
- Vitamins, supplements, or medicine (anything with a Supplement Facts label)
- Hot prepared foods sold ready to eat, like rotisserie chicken or deli soup
- Non-food items such as pet food, cleaning supplies, paper products, hygiene items, and cosmetics
These rules are federal and apply at every retailer, including online stores. For online grocery orders, your EBT card covers eligible food only — delivery fees, service charges, and tips need a separate payment method.11Food and Nutrition Service. Stores Accepting SNAP Online
Keeping Your Benefits Active
Once approved, your certification period usually runs 6 to 12 months. During that window you must report certain changes to your county office:
- Starting or losing a job, or any change in income source
- A change of more than $100 in unearned income
- Household members moving in or out
- A change of address or shelter costs
- Substantial lottery or gambling winnings
Report income increases within 10 calendar days after the end of the month the change happened. ABAWDs must also report any drop in work hours below 20 per week.
Near the end of your certification period, the state mails a Periodic Report Form. Return it with updated information by the deadline. Miss it and your case closes, forcing you to reapply even if you still qualify.
If You’re Denied or Your Benefits Are Cut
You have 90 days from the date on the denial or reduction notice to request a fair hearing.12eCFR. 7 CFR 273.15 – Fair Hearings You can also request a hearing anytime during your certification period if you believe your current benefit amount is wrong. To start:
- Ask verbally or in writing at your county human services office
- Submit the SNAP Hearing Request form through the CDHS website (available in English and Spanish)
- Call the SNAP Hearings Unit at 303-866-7285 or toll-free at 833-847-034513Colorado Department of Human Services. SNAP Hearings Unit
Most hearings happen by phone or video, though you can request a face-to-face hearing.
Penalties for Getting Benefits You Shouldn’t
Colorado treats obtaining SNAP through false statements, impersonation, or other deception as theft. Disqualification periods escalate: one year for a first offense, two years for a second, permanent for a third. These penalties apply whether a criminal court convicts you or a county department wins a civil judgment.14Justia. Colorado Code 26-2-305 – Fraudulent Acts – Penalties Selling or trading your EBT card for cash can also trigger federal charges. If you made an honest mistake on your application, call your county office and correct it before it becomes a fraud investigation.
