The Colorado motorcycle written exam is a 25-question, multiple-choice test given on a touchscreen computer at a state driver’s license office, and you need at least 20 correct answers — an 80% score — to earn a motorcycle instruction permit. Every question is pulled from the Colorado Motorcycle Operator’s Handbook, so that free PDF, published by the Colorado State Patrol, is the only study material you actually need.
What’s on the Test
Questions concentrate on the situations where riders face the most risk: intersections, lane positioning that keeps you visible to drivers, and reactions to hazards like gravel or wet pavement. Expect questions on scanning ahead, following distance, and what to do when something goes wrong with the bike mid-ride. Group riding protocols come up regularly.
Equipment law shows up too, and the rules are specific. Riders and passengers must wear eye protection made of safety glass or plastic unless the helmet already includes a face shield or visor meeting that standard. Any motorcycle carrying a passenger must have footrests for that passenger. Violating these requirements is a class A traffic infraction.1Colorado Public Law. Colorado Code 42-4-232 – Minimum Safety Standards for Motorcycles, Autocycles, and Low-Power Scooters Helmet rules are age-based: anyone under 18 must wear a DOT-approved helmet whether operating or riding as a passenger, while adults 18 and over are not required by Colorado to wear one. Know these as written. They are easy points on the exam.
Work through the handbook cover to cover rather than skimming. The questions are drawn directly from its wording, and the practice quizzes at the end of each chapter are a good gauge of whether you’re ready.
Who Can Take the Exam
You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a Colorado motorcycle instruction permit. Starting April 1, 2026, every applicant under 21 must first complete a motorcycle safety instruction program approved by the Colorado State Patrol before the state will issue the permit.2Justia. Colorado Code 42-2-106 – Instruction Permits and Temporary Licenses If you’re 21 or older, no prior coursework is required.
Applicants under 18 need a parent or guardian to sign an Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship before the permit is issued.
Documents to Bring
Colorado follows federal Real ID standards, so you’ll need:
- An original birth certificate or valid passport
- Your Social Security card
- Two separate documents proving Colorado residency (utility bills, bank statements, and lease agreements all qualify)
The application is form DR 2300A, which covers all driver license and permit transactions. You can fill it out online beforehand or at the office.
Booking the Appointment and Paying the Fee
Written tests require an appointment at a state driver’s license office. Schedule through the Colorado DMV’s online appointment portal and select “Written Tests” as the service type.3Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Appointment Scheduling Information Page Walk-ins generally aren’t accepted. Slots at busier Front Range offices can fill weeks out, so check several locations if your timing is tight.
The instruction permit fee is $19.00, paid at the office the day you test.4Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. State DMV Fees You’ll see your score as soon as you finish. Fail, and you can retake it, though you may need a new appointment and could be asked to wait before trying again.
What the Permit Lets You Do
A motorcycle instruction permit lets you ride on public roads only under the immediate supervision of an adult who is at least 21 and holds a valid Colorado driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement.2Justia. Colorado Code 42-2-106 – Instruction Permits and Temporary Licenses That supervisor doesn’t ride on the bike with you, but they must stay close enough to observe and guide your riding.
Riders under 18 must hold the instruction permit for a full 12 months before upgrading to the full “M” endorsement, and they must still be at least 16 at the time of upgrade.
Skipping the Written Exam Entirely
Colorado’s Motorcycle Operator Safety Training (MOST) program, run through the Colorado State Patrol, is an alternative path to the endorsement. Finishing an approved MOST course earns you a license waiver card that replaces both the written exam and the DMV skills test. Bring the waiver card to your DMV appointment and the endorsement is added to your license on the spot.5Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. I’m a Motorcycle Driver
The MOST course deserves a hard look if you’re under 21, since the April 2026 rule will require you to complete an approved safety program just to get a permit. Taking a MOST course handles the permit requirement, the written exam, and the skills test in one step. Classes include classroom instruction and on-motorcycle range exercises, and some providers supply the motorcycle, so you don’t need to own one yet.
If you plan to take the written exam, download the Colorado Motorcycle Operator’s Handbook, give yourself enough time to read it closely, and book your appointment as soon as you have a date in mind.
