Colorado Pioneer plates are open to any Colorado vehicle owner for a one-time fee of $50, paid on top of standard registration costs and taxes. The plate is authorized as a group special license plate under Colorado Revised Statutes section 42-3-207. It once required proof of century-old family roots in the state, but that ancestry rule was eliminated in 2009.
Who Qualifies Today
The current rule is simple. The Colorado DMV lists the qualification as any person who desires to register their vehicle with the plate.1Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Group Special License Plates There is no genealogy test, no documentation of Colorado heritage, and no waiting list.
For decades it worked differently. Applicants had to show that they or a direct blood relative lived in Colorado at least one hundred years before the application date, and families submitted birth certificates, census records, property deeds, and cattle brand registrations to build a qualifying file. The state dropped that requirement in 2009, turning the Pioneer plate into a specialty plate anyone can buy.
Which Vehicles Are Eligible
Pioneer plates are available for passenger cars, trucks with an empty weight of 16,000 pounds or less, noncommercial vehicles, recreational vehicles, and motor homes. Vehicles registered under the International Registration Plan for interstate commercial carriers are not eligible. What They Cost
The plate carries a one-time fee of $50 for issuance or replacement, paid in addition to standard registration fees and taxes.1Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Your vehicle remains subject to the same annual registration fees and specific ownership tax owed on every registered vehicle in the state, with the ownership tax calculated from the vehicle’s value.
Personalization is extra. Adding custom characters costs $60 on top of the $50 plate fee at issuance, plus $25 each year at renewal to keep the personalized characters.2Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. How to Order
Pioneer plates are ordered through your local county motor vehicle office. Not every specialty plate can be processed online, and plates that require physical documentation or specialized handling may need to be ordered in person or by mail. After the order is placed and payment received, plates are typically printed within three business days, then delivered by USPS in another two to six weeks. Replacing a Lost or Damaged Plate
Replacement costs the same $50 one-time fee. Start the process through the myDMV portal at mydmv.colorado.gov under the Vehicle Services tab by selecting “Replace license plate.” If the replacement cannot be processed online, visit your county motor vehicle office in person.2Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle.
