Colorado Reciprocity: Driver’s License, CCW, and Pro Licenses

Colorado’s reciprocity rules depend entirely on which credential you hold. Some out-of-state licenses transfer with a short DMV visit or a compact privilege; others require a Colorado-specific exam, a waiting period, or an entirely new application; and a few get no recognition at all. Here is what Colorado honors, what it does not, and the step you have to take before your out-of-state credential is good here.

Driver’s License

Colorado recognizes valid driver’s licenses from every other state for visitors. If you establish residency, though, you have 30 days to transfer to a Colorado license.1Colorado Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Welcome to Colorado Colorado defines residency broadly: living in the state continuously for 90 days or more, taking a job, or owning or operating a business here all count.

The transfer itself is straightforward. You visit a DMV office with proof of identity, lawful presence, and Colorado residency. Written and road tests are typically waived if your out-of-state license is valid, but a vision screening is required.

Colorado also participates in the Driver License Compact, which lets member states share driving records.2Colorado Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. 1 CCR 204-30 Rule 2 Driver License Compact Violations racked up in another member state can land on your Colorado record and trigger points. If your license is suspended or revoked elsewhere, Colorado will not issue a new one until that status is cleared.

Commercial drivers face a longer list. Transferring a CDL requires your current license, standard ID documents, a DOT medical card from an FMCSA-certified examiner, proof of Entry-Level Driver Training from an approved school, and a Colorado commercial drive skills test. A hazmat endorsement adds a written exam and a TSA background check.3Colorado Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. CDL General Information

Concealed Carry Permit

Colorado honors concealed handgun permits from other states, but only when several conditions are met at the same time. Under C.R.S. 18-12-213, the issuing state must also recognize Colorado permits, you must be a resident of the issuing state, you must be at least 21, and you must carry both your permit and a driver’s license or state ID from that same state proving residency.4Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) Reciprocity

That residency rule is the one that catches people. A non-resident permit from another state will not be recognized in Colorado, even if that state is on the reciprocity list.

Colorado currently has reciprocity with 34 states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.4Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) Reciprocity The Colorado Bureau of Investigation updates the list, so confirm before you travel.

Even with a recognized permit, Colorado prohibits concealed carry in several places:

  • K-12 school property. You may keep a handgun in your vehicle on school grounds, but it must be secured if the vehicle is unattended.
  • Public buildings with permanent security screening at every entrance, including courthouses.
  • Colleges and universities, where governing boards may ban concealed carry on campus.
  • Licensed child care centers.
  • Polling locations, ballot drop boxes, and central count facilities.
  • Anywhere firearms are prohibited by federal law.

Local governments can also restrict concealed carry in their buildings and specific areas, and those restrictions have legal force when signs are posted at public entrances.5Justia Law. Colorado Code Title 18 Article 12 Part 2 Section 18-12-214 – Authority Granted by Permit, Carrying Restrictions

Professional Licenses

Colorado has no universal professional reciprocity. Each occupation has its own route, and most require at least one Colorado-specific step.

Attorneys

Lawyers can seek Colorado admission without taking the state’s bar exam through Admission on Motion. You need at least three years of active practice within the five years before your application and good standing in your current jurisdiction.6Colorado Supreme Court. On Motion You also need an 85 on the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination and must clear character and fitness review.7National Conference of Bar Examiners. Colorado also accepts transferred Uniform Bar Examination scores. The minimum qualifying scaled score is 270 for exams administered from February 2023 onward, and attorneys who scored 276 or higher on an earlier administration also qualify.8Colorado Supreme Court. Real Estate Brokers

There is no full real estate reciprocity in Colorado, but a partial recognition agreement reduces the education and exam burden for applicants with an active license in any U.S. state or territory.10Colorado Division of Real Estate. Broker License Partial Recognition Agreement and Reciprocity Expect to pass at least the Colorado-specific portion of the licensing exam and complete a fingerprint background check.

Teachers

Out-of-state teachers can apply for a Colorado credential, and the license you get depends on your experience. Three or more years of post-preparation, full-time, fully licensed teaching within the past seven years generally earns you a professional-level license valid for seven years. Less than that gets you an initial three-year license instead.11Colorado Department of Education. Credentialing Guide for Out-of-State Applicants

If you fall short on experience or haven’t demonstrated content mastery for your endorsement area, Colorado can issue a one-year interim authorization while you finish the remaining requirements, usually a content exam. The interim is renewable once.12Colorado Department of Education. Out-of-State Endorsement FAQ Which content exam applies is decided after the state reviews your degree, past test scores, and preparation program. Background checks are required for all applicants.

CPAs

Under the Uniform Accountancy Act updated in late 2025, CPA mobility shifted from a state-based system to an individual-based system. Whether you can practice across state lines without a separate Colorado license now turns on your own education, exam, and experience rather than whether your home state is “substantially equivalent” to Colorado.13NASBA. New CPA Licensure Pathways and CPA Mobility States have to formally adopt the updated model, so timelines vary. Confirm current rules through CPAMobility.org before relying on cross-border practice. Colorado’s Board of Accountancy also offers a nonresident CPE exemption if your principal place of business is in another state and you attest compliance with that state’s continuing education rules.14Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies. Healthcare Compacts

Colorado belongs to several interstate healthcare compacts that let you practice here on your home-state license, without a separate Colorado application. These work differently from the professional licenses above, because the compact itself grants the practice privilege.

Nurses. Colorado joined the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact in 2018. Registered nurses and licensed practical nurses with a multistate license can practice in Colorado if their primary residence is in an NLC member state.15Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies. Colorado Nurse Licensure Compact Advanced Practice Registered Nurses are not covered and still need a Colorado license.

Physical therapists. Colorado is a Physical Therapy Compact member. PTs and PT assistants with a valid home-state license and no active disciplinary action in the past two years can obtain compact privileges in Colorado for roughly $95 in total fees.16Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy. Physical Therapy Compact Members17PT Compact. Process and Requirements No Colorado jurisprudence exam is required.

EMS personnel. Paramedics and EMTs licensed in another REPLICA member state can practice in Colorado under the EMS Compact’s privilege-to-practice framework.18EMS Compact. EMS Compact Home The privilege does not extend to non-member states.

Medical Marijuana Card

Colorado does not recognize medical marijuana cards from any other state. Only Colorado-issued registry cards work at licensed dispensaries. You must establish Colorado residency, get a recommendation from a Colorado-licensed physician, and apply through the Colorado Medical Marijuana Registry. The non-refundable fee is $52 and applies to each application, including renewals.19Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. How to Apply for a Colorado Medical Marijuana Card The certifying physician must maintain a genuine provider-patient relationship, meaning in-person evaluation and ongoing care.

One federal consequence catches many cardholders off guard: marijuana remains a controlled substance under federal law, and federal law prohibits users from possessing firearms. The federal firearms transaction form requires buyers to disclose drug use, and admitting marijuana use blocks the purchase, regardless of what Colorado law allows.

If Colorado Denies or Revokes Your Credential

Colorado can refuse to honor an out-of-state credential, or revoke one it has already granted, when state standards aren’t met or state law is violated. Triggers vary by license: the Colorado Bureau of Investigation can decline a concealed carry permit if the issuing state’s background check falls short of Colorado standards.4Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) Reciprocity The Department of Regulatory Agencies can reject a professional license transfer when the original certification lacks equivalent education or examination. A transferred driver’s license can be suspended for excessive violations, and a real estate license can be revoked for misconduct or missed continuing education.

You generally have the right to challenge these decisions. Driver’s license actions are handled through administrative hearings at the DMV, which run less formally than court proceedings.20Colorado Department of Revenue.
