If you sell tangible goods in Colorado, you need a Colorado sales tax license from the Department of Revenue before your first sale. The license registers your business with the state, authorizes you to collect the 2.9% state sales tax plus any applicable local taxes, and lets you buy inventory for resale without paying tax on it. You apply online through MyBiz Colorado, pay a small prorated fee plus a one-time $50 deposit, and in most cases receive an account number the same day.1Colorado Department of Revenue – Taxation. What catches people is everything around the state license: whether a marketplace already covers you, whether you also need a separate license from a home-rule city, and the filing cycle that starts the moment you’re registered.
Do You Actually Need One
Any business that sells, rents, or leases tangible personal property at retail in Colorado needs a license. Services generally aren’t subject to Colorado sales tax, so a service-only business usually doesn’t.1Colorado Department of Revenue – Taxation. How to Apply for a Colorado Sales Tax License
Physical presence in Colorado (an office, warehouse, employees, or inventory stored here) triggers the requirement. So does economic nexus for out-of-state sellers: once your retail sales into Colorado exceed $100,000 in the current or prior calendar year, you must register and begin collecting.2Colorado Department of Revenue. If You Only Sell on a Marketplace
Amazon, Etsy, eBay, and similar platforms are classified as marketplace facilitators, and Colorado requires them to collect and remit all applicable state and state-administered local sales taxes on sales made through their platform. If every sale you make runs through one of these marketplaces, you likely don’t need your own Colorado sales tax license at all.3Colorado Department of Revenue. Sales and Use Tax Topics: Marketplaces
The moment you add your own website, a physical shop, or a booth at a craft fair, you become a multichannel seller. Then you need a license, you collect tax on the non-marketplace sales, and you file returns for those sales yourself.3Colorado Department of Revenue. Sales and Use Tax Topics: Marketplaces
What It Costs
Colorado licenses run on a two-year cycle, expiring December 31 of each odd-numbered year. The fee is prorated depending on when during the cycle you apply:4Department of Revenue – Taxation. Standard Retail License – Section: License Fees
- January–June of an even year (2026): $16
- July–December of an even year (2026): $12
- January–June of an odd year (2027): $8
- July–December of an odd year (2027): $4
New accounts also pay a one-time $50 deposit with the application. It’s refunded automatically once your business has collected and remitted $50 in state sales tax, so don’t try to deduct it on a return. The deposit applies only to your first business location. A new business applying in early 2026 would therefore pay $66 for a single location: $16 fee and $50 deposit.4Department of Revenue – Taxation. Standard Retail License – Section: License Fees
Special Event License
Sellers who only work farmers’ markets, festivals, or craft shows can use a lighter option. A single-event license costs $8. A multiple-event license costs $16 for the two-year cycle, with the same proration schedule as the standard license. If you already hold a standard retail license, special event licenses are free.5Colorado Department of Revenue. Special Event License
How to Apply
Have this ready before you start:
- Business legal name and any trade name (DBA)
- Physical and mailing addresses
- Employer Identification Number (EIN), or Social Security Number for sole proprietors
- Entity type (sole proprietorship, LLC, corporation, partnership)
- Start date of business operations
- Description of what you plan to sell
Submit the application online through the Department of Revenue’s MyBiz Colorado portal. The system walks you through each field and may prompt you to upload supporting documents. Online applicants typically receive a sales tax account number the same day, along with temporary license details that let you begin collecting tax immediately.1Colorado Department of Revenue – Taxation. Paper applications are still accepted. Expect two to three weeks for your physical license to arrive by mail. Once you have it, Colorado law requires you to post the license in a conspicuous place at your business location.6Justia. Colorado Code 39-26-103 – Licenses – Fee – Revocation – Definition
Buying Inventory Tax-Free
A sales tax license also authorizes you to buy inventory for resale without paying sales tax to your suppliers. Give the supplier a resale certificate that includes your sales tax license number, a description of the items, and a statement that the goods are for resale. The supplier sells to you tax-free, and your customer pays the sales tax when you make the retail sale. Keep every certificate on file; the Department of Revenue can ask to see them during an audit.
The Home-Rule City Problem
Your state license covers state tax and tax for any county, city, or special district that lets the state collect on its behalf. Those are called statutory jurisdictions. Home-rule cities administer and collect their own sales tax independently, and if you do business in one, you typically need a separate license from that city.7Colorado Department of Revenue. Local Government Sales Tax
Some home-rule cities participate in the state’s Sales and Use Tax System (SUTS), which lets you register and file through a single state-run portal. Others don’t, and you have to apply directly with the city. Check the SUTS participating jurisdictions list first; for cities not on it, go to the city’s finance department for forms and fees.8Colorado Department of Revenue. SUTS Participating Jurisdictions Some cities require a separate license for each location within their limits, so budget for additional fees if you operate from multiple addresses in the same city.
This is where new Colorado business owners get hurt. Getting the state license feels like the finish line, but if you skip the local registration you owe more tax per transaction than you’ve been collecting, and you’re personally liable for the difference.
Filing Once You’re Licensed
How often you file depends on how much sales tax you collect each month:9Colorado Department of Revenue. Sales Tax Filing Information – Section: Filing Requirements and Frequency
- $600 or more per month: file monthly, due by the 20th of the following month.
- Under $600 per month: file quarterly, due by the 20th of the month after the quarter ends (April 20, July 20, October 20, January 20).
- $15 or less per month: file annually, due January 20.
If the 20th falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. File a return every period, even when you made zero sales and collected no tax. Skipping a zero-dollar return is one of the easiest ways to trigger penalties.9Colorado Department of Revenue. Sales Tax Filing Information – Section: Filing Requirements and Frequency
The Service Fee Is Gone in 2026
Until the end of 2025, retailers could keep a small service fee from the state sales tax they collected. That ended January 1, 2026. You may no longer retain the state sales tax service fee, and must remit every dollar of state sales tax you collect.10Department of Revenue – Taxation. Service Fee Some local jurisdictions may still offer their own vendor discounts, so check with each municipality where you file.
Renewal
All Colorado sales tax licenses expire on December 31 of odd-numbered years. The renewal fee is $16 per physical location. The Department of Revenue sends renewal notices based on the information it has on file, but the responsibility for renewing on time is yours. A license that isn’t renewed, or that contains outdated information, is not valid, which means you’d technically be operating without a license until you fix it.11Colorado Department of Revenue. Sales Tax Points of Compliance Brochure The next renewal deadline is December 31, 2027. Set your own reminder; don’t count on the mailed notice.
What Happens If You Skip Any of This
Making retail sales without a valid sales tax license is a class 3 misdemeanor in Colorado. On top of potential criminal exposure, the Department of Revenue can impose a civil penalty of $50 per day you operate without a license, up to $1,000. The department can also revoke your license after notice and a hearing.6Justia. Colorado Code 39-26-103 – Licenses – Fee – Revocation – Definition
Late filing or payment carries a penalty of the greater of $15 or 10% of the unpaid tax, plus 0.5% for each month the balance remains outstanding, capped at 18%. For 2026, interest accrues at 8% if you pay before or within 30 days of receiving a deficiency notice, and at 11% if you don’t.12Department of Revenue – Taxation. Tax Topics: Penalties and Interest Late payment also disqualifies you from any remaining local vendor discounts. Filing on time, even when you owe nothing, is always cheaper than dealing with the penalties later.
