Colorado Springs Car Sales Tax: Rate, Registration, and Fees

A car purchased by a Colorado Springs resident is taxed at a combined 8.20% of the net price.1City of Colorado Springs. General Sales Tax Information On a $25,000 vehicle with no trade-in, that’s $2,050. The Colorado Springs car sales tax is only part of what you’ll owe at the county clerk’s window, though. Registration fees and an annual ownership tax come with the territory, and both catch new buyers by surprise.

How the 8.20% Breaks Down

Four separate taxing bodies take a share of every vehicle sale inside the city:

If your dealer invoice shows a different total, those four lines are what to check it against.

Your Address Decides Your Rate

Colorado taxes vehicles based on where the buyer lives and garages the car, not where the dealership sits.6Colorado Department of Revenue. Sale and Use Tax Topics: Motor Vehicles A Colorado Springs resident pays the full 8.20% whether they buy from a lot in town or in another county.

The flip side helps some buyers. If you live in unincorporated El Paso County outside city limits, you skip the 3.07% city tax entirely, leaving roughly 5.13% for the state, county, and PPRTA portions. When a dealer inside the city sells to a buyer whose home address is outside the city, the dealer should not collect the Colorado Springs municipal tax. You would instead owe use tax to whatever jurisdiction covers your home address, paid at registration.6Colorado Department of Revenue. Sale and Use Tax Topics: Motor Vehicles

What the Tax Applies To

The 8.20% is applied to the net purchase price after any trade-in credit from the dealer. Buy a $30,000 car and trade in your old one for $10,000, and you pay tax on $20,000. That’s $1,640 rather than $2,460. Form DR 0024, which every dealer completes, has separate lines for gross sales price, trade-in amount, and net sales price, so the deduction is built into the standard paperwork.7Colorado Department of Revenue. Manufacturer rebates work differently, and this trips people up. A $3,000 manufacturer rebate does not reduce your taxable price. Colorado treats these rebates as incentives from the manufacturer rather than a reduction in what you paid the dealer, so you still owe tax on the pre-rebate figure. A dealer cash incentive applied directly to the purchase price generally does reduce the taxable amount because it lowers what the buyer actually pays. On a $35,000 vehicle with a $3,000 manufacturer rebate, you pay tax on $35,000, not $32,000.

Dealer documentation fees are another cost to watch. Colorado has no legal cap on these fees, and they commonly run $600 to $700 in the current market. Whether the doc fee gets rolled into your taxable purchase price depends on how it’s characterized on the sales documents, so ask the dealer to break out the numbers before signing.

You Have 60 Days to Register and Pay

Colorado law gives you 60 days after buying a vehicle to register it and pay all applicable sales or use tax.8Justia Law. Colorado Code 42-3-103 – Registration Required; Exemptions; Rules The county clerk cannot issue a title or registration until taxes are paid, so the two happen at the same window.6Colorado Department of Revenue. Miss the deadline and you owe a $25 late fee for each month or partial month past the 60 days, capped at $100. You also owe prorated back registration taxes and fees from the date you were required to register through the date you actually show up.9FindLaw. Colorado Code 42-3-112 – Late Fees A buyer who waits six months doesn’t just pay $100 in late fees; they also owe several months of ownership tax and registration fees they would have owed anyway. Driving an unregistered vehicle is also a traffic infraction, and a second offense within five years is a class 1 misdemeanor.8Justia Law. Where to Pay and What to Bring

For Colorado Springs residents, the El Paso County Clerk and Recorder’s Motor Vehicle Department handles tax collection, titling, and registration. You can visit any branch location with your documents, and they accept cash, checks, and major credit and debit cards.10El Paso County Clerk and Recorder. Payment Options Card transactions carry an administrative fee under C.R.S. 29-11.5-103, which on a $30,000 vehicle can run into the hundreds, so paying by check or cash is often the cheaper route. Colorado’s myDMV online portal supports first-time registration too, with documents mailed to your home.11Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Vehicle Registration – General Information Complex situations, such as out-of-state titles or lien complications, are generally easier to resolve in person.

If you bought from a dealer, the key paperwork is Form DR 0024, the Standard Sales Tax Receipt for Vehicle Sales. The dealer completes it and submits it to the county clerk where the vehicle will be registered; without it, the clerk cannot process your title or registration.12Department of Revenue – Taxation. If you bought from a private party, you bring the paperwork yourself. You need the title properly signed by all listed owners and a bill of sale that identifies the vehicle by year, make, and VIN, shows the date and time of sale, and carries both signatures.13Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Buyer’s and Seller’s Responsibilities Sales tax is paid at the clerk’s counter, since a private seller typically has no obligation to collect it on your behalf.

Buying a Car Out of State

A vehicle purchased in another state isn’t subject to Colorado sales tax on the sale itself. You instead owe Colorado use tax at the same combined rate when you register the vehicle here. If you already paid sales tax to the other state, Colorado credits that amount against the use tax due; you only pay the difference if Colorado’s rate is higher.6Colorado Department of Revenue. Sale and Use Tax Topics: Motor Vehicles

Because Colorado Springs is a home-rule city, it administers its own sales and use tax separately from the state. The Department of Revenue’s general motor vehicle guidance explicitly excludes home-rule cities, so questions about how the city portion applies to an out-of-state purchase should go directly to the Colorado Springs Sales Tax Division. Colorado’s emissions program covers the Denver metro area and much of the northern Front Range; El Paso County is generally outside the mandatory testing zone, but confirm current requirements with the county clerk before assuming your vehicle is exempt.14Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. The Annual Ownership Tax You’ll Keep Paying

Sales tax is a one-time charge, but Colorado also levies an annual specific ownership tax that replaces what most states call personal property tax on vehicles. The tax is based on the vehicle’s original taxable value, which for most passenger cars is 85% of the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. The percentage applied to that value declines on a fixed schedule as the vehicle ages.15Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Taxes and Fees

For a standard passenger vehicle (Tax Class C), the rates are:

  • First year: 2.10% of taxable value
  • Second year: 1.50%
  • Third year: 1.20%
  • Fourth year: 0.90%
  • Years five through nine: 0.45%
  • Tenth year and beyond: a flat $3.00

On a vehicle with a $35,000 MSRP, the taxable value is $29,750. First-year ownership tax runs about $625. By the fifth year, it drops to roughly $134. The original taxable value stays the same for the life of the vehicle; only the percentage changes.15Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Taxes and Fees The charge is rolled into your annual registration renewal, so it’s easy to forget about until the bill arrives.

Extra Fees if You’re Buying Electric

Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles owe additional registration fees on top of the standard sales tax and ownership tax. For the 2026–2027 fiscal year, a fully electric vehicle pays a $26 annual fee and a plug-in hybrid pays $13. Both also owe a separate $60.05 annual road-usage fee that the Department of Revenue may adjust for inflation.16Alternative Fuels Data Center. Electric Vehicle (EV) Fee These fees exist because electric vehicles don’t contribute to road funding through gasoline taxes.

A road-usage equalization fee also applies at registration. For passenger electric vehicles under 10,000 pounds, it adds a smaller flat charge on top of the annual fees above. Registering a new EV in Colorado Springs costs noticeably more in annual fees than registering a comparable gas-powered vehicle, though the gap narrows after the first few years as ownership tax declines.
