A California fix-it ticket, officially a notice to correct a violation, lets you clear a minor equipment or paperwork citation for a $25 transaction fee instead of paying the full bail amount, which runs roughly $192 to $233 depending on the offense.1California Courts. Uniform Bail and Penalty Schedules You fix the problem, get an authorized person to sign a Certificate of Correction, and deliver the signed form plus the $25 to the court by your appearance date. Miss any piece of that and the citation converts to a standard infraction with the full fine attached.
How to Tell If Your Ticket Qualifies
Your citation itself tells you. Correctable violations are marked on the form, usually with a checkbox. Vehicle Code Section 40610 covers registration, driver’s license, all-terrain vehicle safety certificate, and mechanical equipment violations, and when none of the disqualifying conditions apply, the officer is actually required to issue the correctable notice rather than a standard ticket.2California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 40610
Common examples include broken taillights, headlights, or turn signals; missing or improperly mounted license plates; exhaust and muffler problems; expired registration; failure to carry your driver’s license; and failure to show proof of insurance. An officer can refuse to make a violation correctable if there’s evidence of fraud or persistent neglect, if the defect creates an immediate safety hazard, or if you won’t agree to fix it promptly. Motorcycle exhaust violations under Section 27151(a) are specifically excluded and can’t be handled this way.2California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 40610
Two documentation violations carry a quirk worth knowing. For a failure-to-carry-license citation under Section 12951, you have to show the court you held a valid license at the time of the stop, not just that you got one afterward, and on a third or later offense the court can refuse dismissal even with a valid license.3California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 12951 Proof of insurance under Section 16028 works the same way: you must demonstrate coverage was in force on the citation date, not that you bought a policy after the stop.4California Legislative Information. How Long You Have to Fix It
The officer writes the deadline on the citation. It can’t exceed 30 days from the date of the ticket, except for all-terrain vehicle safety certificates, which get up to 90 days.2California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 40610 Your court appearance date falls inside that window, and your paperwork has to reach the court by that date.
Getting the Correction Signed Off
Fixing the problem is only part of the job. The court won’t accept your word for it; you need an authorized person to sign the Certificate of Correction, which is printed on the back of most citations or available as a separate court form.5Superior Court of California, County of Santa Barbara. Certificate of Correction SC-8020
Who can sign depends on what’s being corrected:
- General equipment violations can be verified by any peace officer, including CHP, local police, or sheriff’s deputies.5Superior Court of California, County of Santa Barbara. Certificate of Correction SC-8020
- Brakes, lamps, smog devices, and mufflers must be certified by an inspection station licensed for that specific type of violation, not just any officer.
- Registration can be verified by a DMV representative or by a peace officer.
- Driver’s license and insurance are generally verified by the court clerk when you present the documents.
Local police stations will usually inspect a repair without an appointment, but don’t leave it to the last afternoon. Showing up near closing time on the day your proof is due means a single hiccup blows your deadline.
Submitting Proof and Paying the $25 Fee
File the signed Certificate of Correction with the court listed on your citation, along with $25 per violation.4California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 40611 When valid proof is submitted, no additional bail is collected beyond that fee.1California Courts. Uniform Bail and Penalty Schedules
Methods vary by court. Most accept proof in person at the traffic clerk’s window or by mail. The Los Angeles Superior Court does not accept correctable violation submissions online or by phone.6Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles. How Do I Submit a Proof of Corrections – Traffic Division A few jurisdictions, including San Francisco through the SFMTA, do offer online submission for certain vehicle code violations. Check your specific court’s website before assuming online is an option.
If you mail your proof, the court has to receive it by the appearance date. A postmark isn’t enough. Send a check or money order for the $25 fee made out to the court.
What Missing the Deadline Costs
If your signed proof and payment don’t reach the court on time, the citation is treated as a standard infraction and the full bail amount applies. A registration violation runs about $192. A driver’s license offense is closer to $233.1California Courts. Uniform Bail and Penalty Schedules On top of that, Penal Code Section 1214.1 allows the court to add a civil assessment of up to $100 for failing to appear or failing to pay.7California Legislative Information. California Penal Code 1214.1 A broken taillight that should have cost $25 can end up north of $300.
The license consequences are separate. California no longer suspends licenses solely for unpaid tickets, but a willful failure to appear is treated differently. The court can notify the DMV, which sends a pending suspension notice. Fail to clear the failure-to-appear within 60 days and your license is suspended until you do.
If You Live Out of State
You can still use the correction process. The Driver License Compact, which governs how states share traffic violation information, does not cover non-moving violations like equipment citations, so a fix-it ticket resolved through the California process should not be reported to your home state’s DMV.8CSG National Center for Interstate Compacts. Driver License Compact
The hard part is getting a sign-off from hundreds of miles away. You still need the repair verified, the signed proof delivered to the California court, and the $25 paid before your appearance date. If you can’t find a local officer willing to verify the repair, call the court well before the deadline rather than hoping for leniency after.
If You Hold a Commercial Driver’s License
Federal law generally forbids states from masking or diverting traffic convictions off a CDL holder’s record, but 49 CFR Section 384.226 specifically carves out vehicle defect violations.9eCFR. 49 CFR 384.226 – Prohibition on Masking Convictions You can use the fix-it process for equipment violations without conflicting with the federal rule. The exemption does not reach moving violations, so a correctable citation tied to a moving offense may still be subject to the federal masking restriction.
Effect on Your Record and Insurance
A correctable violation that you properly fix and dismiss does not add points to your California driving record, and because no points attach and the violation is dismissed, it should not affect your auto insurance rates. If you let it convert to a standard infraction instead, most equipment violations still carry zero points when paid as a full fine, but the conviction itself goes on your record and you pay several times what dismissal would have cost.
One Thing to Watch Before 2027
Section 40610 contains a sunset clause repealing it on January 1, 2027.2California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 40610 The Legislature has extended it before, but if you’re dealing with a citation in late 2026, confirm the statute is still in force before counting on the correction process.
