CT DMV Renewal: License, Registration, and REAL ID

A Connecticut DMV renewal can be done online, in person at a DMV or partner office, or by mail, but the right channel depends on what you’re renewing and whether anything on your record is blocking you. A standard non-commercial driver’s license runs $72 for six years or $96 for eight years, and a passenger vehicle registration is $120 for three years plus surcharges. Before any of that matters, you need a clean account: unpaid municipal taxes, parking fines, or a missed emissions test will stop the renewal cold.

Clear Any Holds First

The DMV will not process a renewal while certain obligations sit open. The most common block is unpaid municipal property tax on a motor vehicle. When a local tax collector reports a delinquent vehicle tax to the DMV, the commissioner will not issue a registration for that vehicle or register any other vehicle in your name until the tax is paid.1Justia. Connecticut Code 14-33 – Renewal of Registration Denied for Failure to Pay Motor Vehicle Property Tax or Fines for Parking Violations Unpaid parking fines reported by a municipality trigger the same freeze.

Emissions compliance is the other frequent snag. Connecticut requires emissions testing every two years at privately owned inspection stations. Miss your testing window by more than 30 days and a $20 late fee is added when you finally bring the vehicle in.2Connecticut eRegulations. Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies 14-164c-2a – The State Inspection Requirements Vehicles four model years old or newer are exempt from testing, though a $40 emissions exemption fee is built into the registration cost.3CT.gov. Outstanding tolls and child support obligations can also freeze a renewal. If any hold appears on your record, you’ll need a release from the agency that placed it before the DMV will move forward.

Renewing Your Driver’s License

You can start a license renewal as early as 180 days before the expiration date on your card.4CT.gov. Online

The DMV’s online portal is the fastest route. You’ll need the renewal identification number from your mailed notice, your Social Security number, and a credit card. Payment processes immediately.

Not everyone qualifies. The DMV will not let you renew online if any of the following apply:4CT.gov. How to Renew Driver’s License

  • You skipped the photo at your last renewal (renewed by mail or online previously).
  • You need a REAL ID for the first time.
  • You hold a commercial driver’s license.
  • You’re a non-U.S. citizen.
  • Your license is suspended or drive-only.
  • Your license has been expired two or more years.
  • You hold an S, V, A, or F endorsement.

If any of these apply, the online system will send you to schedule an in-person appointment instead.

In Person

In-person renewals require an appointment through the DMV’s online reservation system. Services are available at DMV hub offices and at partner locations including AAA and Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union, though partners may charge a convenience fee of up to $8 per transaction.3CT.gov. DMV Fees Bring your renewal notice and payment. This is also the path when you’re due for a new photo, which the DMV requires at least every other cycle.

By Mail

Active-duty military personnel and residents temporarily living outside Connecticut can renew by mail using Form B-350, available on the DMV website, together with the applicable fee.4CT.gov. How to Renew Driver’s License You can’t renew by mail if your last renewal was also processed by mail or online, because a new photo is required.

Renewing Your Vehicle Registration

Connecticut registers passenger vehicles on a three-year cycle. The base fee for a standard passenger car, SUV, or van is $120.6Justia. Connecticut General Statutes 14-49 – Fees for Registration On top of that, you’ll pay a $24 Passport to the Parks surcharge, which covers free parking at Connecticut state parks and beaches for the registration period, plus a $15 Clean Air Act fee and a $10 administrative fee.7CT.gov. Online and In Person

The DMV’s online registration renewal walks you through verifying your vehicle details and submitting payment. You’ll need the renewal notice the DMV sent, which carries the confirmation number and fee breakdown. Once the transaction goes through, the system generates a temporary registration certificate you can use immediately.

For in-person service, DMV branch offices handle registration renewals by appointment. AAA and other partner locations also process registration renewals, subject to the same convenience fee.

REAL ID Requires an In-Person Visit

Since May 7, 2025, a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or ID has been required to board domestic commercial flights and enter secure federal facilities, including military bases.9Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Frequently Asked Questions A compliant Connecticut license shows a small star in the upper right corner. A license without the star still works for driving but won’t get you through airport security without an alternative like a valid U.S. passport.10Transportation Security Administration. Countdown Is on for Connecticut Residents to Obtain a REAL ID

You cannot upgrade to a REAL ID online. The first time you get one, you must appear at a DMV branch in person with original documents proving your identity, your Social Security number, and Connecticut residency (two documents from different sources dated within 90 days).11CT.gov. REAL ID Document Identity Verification Checklist Once you have a REAL ID, later renewals that don’t need a new photo can be handled online like any other renewal.

What Arrives After You Submit

Connecticut uses central issuance for licenses and ID cards, so your permanent card is printed at a central facility and mailed to you. The DMV says your license will arrive within 30 days.4CT.gov. How to Renew Driver’s License During that window, your printed confirmation receipt or the stamped renewal application serves as a valid temporary license for law enforcement purposes. Confirm your mailing address before submitting; a returned card only adds delay.

Registration materials generally arrive sooner since no card needs to be printed. Until the certificate and decal show up, your online confirmation receipt or stamped renewal notice works as proof of current registration.

What It Costs to Let Your Credentials Lapse

Driving on an expired license is more than a paperwork problem. Connecticut allows a 60-day grace period after expiration: during that window, operating without a renewed license is an infraction carrying a fine.5Justia. Connecticut Code 14-41 – Expiration and Renewal of Operators Licenses and Identity Cards After 60 days, you’re treated the same as someone who never had a license, which is a more serious charge under a separate statute. Once a license has been expired two years or more, renewal is off the table entirely; you’ll start the licensing process over from scratch.4CT.gov. How to Renew Driver’s License

For registration, driving or parking an unregistered vehicle on a public road is an infraction. If the registration expired within the past 30 days, you’ll be fined for failure to renew. Beyond 30 days, you face the full penalty for operating an unregistered vehicle. A Connecticut resident caught driving with out-of-state plates on a vehicle they own faces a $250 fine, though that fine is suspended for first-time violators who show proof of registration before sentencing.12Justia.
