To meet Connecticut REAL ID requirements, you need to visit a Connecticut DMV office in person with one primary identity document and two proofs of state residency dated within the last 90 days. The upgrade is optional. A standard Connecticut license still covers driving, voting, and everyday identification, but since May 7, 2025, it no longer gets you through TSA screening or into certain federal buildings.1Transportation Security Administration. Who Actually Needs One
Nobody is required to get a REAL ID. The Connecticut DMV has confirmed you can keep renewing a standard license indefinitely.2Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles. Get a REAL ID The question is whether you do the two things that now demand one: board a domestic flight or enter a federal facility like a military installation.1Transportation Security Administration. Nuclear power plants work on a separate timeline. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will not begin enforcing REAL ID requirements for visitor access until May 5, 2027.3Nuclear Regulatory Commission. REAL ID Act Requirements at Nuclear Power Plants
One eligibility limit worth knowing upfront: only U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents can get a full-term Connecticut REAL ID. Drive-only license holders are not eligible.2Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles. Get a REAL ID
Documents You Need to Bring
Everything must be an original or a certified copy. Photocopies are not accepted for any primary document.
- One identity document. A valid U.S. passport, passport card, or certified birth certificate filed with a state vital records office. Hospital-issued birth certificates do not count.4Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles. REAL ID Document Identity Verification Checklist
- Two proofs of Connecticut residency. They must come from two different sources and be dated within 90 days. Utility bills, bank statements, insurance cards, pay stubs, and property tax bills all qualify.4Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles. REAL ID Document Identity Verification Checklist
A Social Security card is no longer required. Under the REAL ID Modernization Act, Connecticut dropped the mandate to show Social Security documentation, though you can still use it as a supporting identity document if you have it.2Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles. Get a REAL ID
If Your Name Has Changed
If your current name doesn’t match what’s on your birth certificate, you need paperwork that bridges every change. Certified marriage certificates, divorce decrees, or court-issued name change documents all work, and they have to form an unbroken chain from your birth name to the name you use now.4Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles. REAL ID Document Identity Verification Checklist Religious marriage certificates are not accepted. The DMV wants certified copies issued by a town or city clerk.5Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles. Update a Driver’s License, Learner’s Permit, or Non-Driver ID
Why Applications Get Rejected
Name mismatches between documents are the most common problem. If your birth certificate says “Katherine” and your utility bill says “Kate,” that gap can stall the process. Either make the names match across your documents or bring the legal paperwork that explains the difference.
Non-Citizen Documentation
Permanent residents can use a valid green card (Form I-551) as their primary identity document under the federal regulations.6eCFR. 6 CFR 37.11 – Application and Documents the Applicant Must Provide People with temporary lawful status, including nonimmigrants, approved asylum applicants, and those with Temporary Protected Status, may qualify for a limited-term REAL ID that expires when their authorized stay ends. An unexpired Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766) can also serve as an identity document.7Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Frequently Asked Questions
For nonimmigrants other than those from Freely Associated States, the standard combination is a valid foreign passport, valid visa, and I-94 form, or an EAD, as evidence of both identity and lawful status.7Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Frequently Asked Questions Call the DMV before your appointment if you’re unsure which documents fit your status. The wrong combination means a wasted trip.
At the DMV
Your first REAL ID requires an in-person visit. The sequence looks like this:
- Schedule an appointment through the Connecticut DMV website. You can visit any DMV hub or branch, or go to a partner location such as a participating AAA office or a Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union branch. Walk-ins work at most offices but mean long waits. Cheshire, Putnam, and Stamford take no walk-ins at all, and no location offers walk-in service on Saturdays.2Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles. Get a REAL ID
- An agent reviews your original documents and takes a new photograph.
- Pay the fee. If you’re upgrading outside your normal renewal cycle, the DMV charges a $30 duplicate fee. If your license happens to be up for renewal, there is no extra cost for adding REAL ID verification.2Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles. Get a REAL ID
- You walk out with a temporary paper document. Your permanent REAL ID, marked with a gold star in the upper right corner, arrives by mail within 20 business days.2Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles. Get a REAL ID
Confirm your mailing address at the counter. A card sent to an old address becomes a replacement request and more waiting.
Don’t Try to Fly on the Paper Temporary
TSA explicitly does not accept temporary driver’s licenses.8Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint If you have a flight within the 20-business-day mailing window and your old license has expired, the paper document the DMV hands you will not get you through security. There is no expedited option for the physical card. Finish the DMV visit well before any trip, or carry a U.S. passport as backup.
If You’d Rather Skip the Upgrade
Several forms of identification still clear TSA checkpoints and federal buildings without a REAL ID:
- U.S. passport or passport card. The card fits in a wallet and costs less than the book.
- Department of Defense military ID, including dependent IDs.
- DHS trusted traveler cards: Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, and FAST.
- Permanent resident card.
- Valid foreign passport.
- Photo identification issued by a federally recognized Tribal Nation, including Enhanced Tribal Cards.
TSA has also begun accepting certain digital identification during pilot programs, including Apple Digital ID, Clear ID, and Google ID pass, though availability depends on your state and the specific airport.8Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint
Children Under 18
TSA does not require identification from travelers under 18, so a child flying with a parent or guardian doesn’t need any ID of their own.8Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint Connecticut will still issue a REAL ID non-driver card for a minor if you want one. A parent or legal guardian at the same address can supply the two residency documents in their own name, but the child still needs their own primary identity document, such as a birth certificate.4Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles.
