The Connecticut unemployment phone number is (800) 956-3294, the toll-free line for the Department of Labor’s Consumer Contact Center. Agents answer Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the center is closed on weekends and state holidays. This is the number to call to file a new claim, check a payment, fix a ReEmployCT login, or sort out any other unemployment issue.1Connecticut Department of Labor. All Consumer Contact Center Numbers
The Department of Labor publishes three voice numbers and a TTY option. All three voice lines route to the same contact center and handle the same inquiries, so pick whichever is cheapest or most convenient for your phone plan.
- (800) 956-3294 — toll-free line
- (860) 967-0493 — local line for the 860 area code (Hartford and most of central and eastern Connecticut)
- (203) 941-6868 — local line for the 203 area code (Bridgeport, New Haven, and southwestern Connecticut)
- TTY: 711 or (800) 842-9710 for hearing-impaired callers

How to Reach a Live Person Without Waiting on Hold
When call volume is high, the phone system offers a callback scheduler that holds your place in line. You hang up, keep your phone nearby, and an agent calls you back during a given window. The return call often comes from a blocked or state-affiliated number, so answer calls you’d normally screen while you’re waiting.1Connecticut Department of Labor. Early in the day tends to be the easiest time to get through. Mondays and the day after a state holiday are the hardest, because weekly certifications and backed-up questions pile into the first open hours.
The Department of Labor website also runs a chatbot labeled “Ask DOL” for quick questions. It can answer simple how-to queries, but it won’t replace a live agent for anything involving your specific claim, your identity, or a payment problem.1Connecticut Department of Labor. Have This Ready Before You Dial
Agents will verify your identity and pull up your file before they can help you, so calling with everything in hand usually saves a second call.
- Social Security number. Required on all correspondence and used to pull your account.
- Date of birth and current mailing address. Used to verify identity and confirm where DOL mail is going.
- Employment history for the past 18 months. Every employer’s name and mailing address, plus your start and end dates. Old pay stubs and W-2 forms are the easiest place to find this.
- Reason you left each job. Laid off, fired, or quit — this matters for eligibility. If your employer gave you a Form UC-61 (sometimes called a “pink slip”), have it ready. Employers are required to provide this form whenever a worker becomes unemployed for any reason.2Connecticut State Library. Unemployment Notice, Form UC-61
- Alien Registration Number if you are not a U.S. citizen, along with proof of legal work authorization during your base period.
- A valid email address if you don’t yet have a ReEmployCT account.
- DD-214 (Member 4) if you recently separated from military service.
If you’re missing something, call anyway. The Department of Labor advises filing immediately, even if your employer hasn’t given you the pink slip yet. Waiting can cost you a week of benefits you can’t recover later.
What the Contact Center Can Help With
The Consumer Contact Center is the single point of contact for unemployment questions. Common reasons people call:
- Filing a new unemployment claim or reopening an existing one
- Fixing a ReEmployCT account lockout or password problem
- Checking the status of a payment or a pending claim
- Updating a mailing address or bank account for direct deposit
- Switching between direct deposit and the debit card payment option3Connecticut Department of Labor. How Can I Receive My Unemployment Benefit Payments
- Questions about weekly certifications and the work search requirement
- Questions about a denial letter or how to file an appeal
If you got locked out of ReEmployCT, the DOL has also posted step-by-step unlock instructions on the Consumer Contact Center page, and the callback scheduler works for lockout calls too.1Connecticut Department of Labor. Unemployment Benefits and Claim Services
What the Phone Line Can’t Do
Some things aren’t resolved over the phone. If your claim has been denied, the Consumer Contact Center can explain the letter and point you to the appeal, but you still have to file the appeal in writing within 21 calendar days of the mailing date on the denial. That deadline is strict.4Connecticut Department of Labor. How Do I Appeal an Unemployment Benefits Decision
Agents also can’t file your weekly certification for you. Certifications run Sunday through Saturday and have to be submitted through ReEmployCT by the end of each claim week; the phone line is for problems with the system, not a substitute for it.5Connecticut Department of Labor. Online Alternative
Nearly everything the phone line handles can also be done through ReEmployCT, Connecticut’s online unemployment system. The portal runs around the clock outside of occasional maintenance windows. Through your account you can file weekly certifications, update your mailing address or bank information, view all correspondence from the Department of Labor, and check the status of your claim.5Connecticut Department of Labor. For simple account tasks the portal is usually faster than calling. The phone line matters most when something isn’t working, when you can’t log in, or when you need to explain a situation that doesn’t fit into a form.
In-Person Help
If you’d rather talk to someone face-to-face, Connecticut’s American Job Centers offer free in-person and virtual services at full-service locations in Bridgeport, Hartford, Montville, New Haven, and Waterbury. The centers focus on job search support — resume help, interview preparation, job referrals, and skills training — rather than claim processing, but staff can point you toward the right unemployment resource and the workshops and employer contacts you make through a center count toward your weekly work search activities.6Connecticut Department of Labor.
