CZ P-01 in California: Roster Status, SKU 01199, and DROS

The CZ P-01 has been one of the few compact, alloy-framed 9mm pistols a California resident could buy new off a dealer’s shelf, but its future on the state’s roster is uncertain: the Department of Justice listing for the California-compliant model (SKU 01199) carried an expiration date of January 1, 2025, and the manufacturer had to renew the certification to keep it available for retail sale.1California Department of Justice – Office of the Attorney General. CZ 75 P-01 01199 Before you go shopping, pull up the current Roster of Certified Handguns on the DOJ site and confirm the model is still there. If it is, the path below is a standard new-handgun purchase. If it isn’t, your only option is a private party transfer from someone who already owns one in California.

Is the CZ P-01 Still on the Roster?

California prohibits licensed dealers from selling any new handgun that isn’t on the Roster of Certified Handguns.2California Department of Justice – Office of the Attorney General. Handguns Certified for Sale Each certification has an expiration date, and the manufacturer has to file a renewal and pay an annual maintenance fee to keep the listing active. If the renewal isn’t filed, the listing drops off automatically at midnight on the expiration date. The DOJ sends a reminder 60 days out, but the responsibility is entirely on the manufacturer.3New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. Roster of Certified Handgun Listing Renewal Procedures

Check the DOJ’s certified handgun search directly before you make a trip to a dealer. If the SKU is listed, you can buy it new. If it isn’t, skip to the private party transfer section below.

The California-Compliant Model: SKU 01199

The version certified for California retail sale is SKU 01199. It ships with two 10-round magazines to match the state’s capacity cap, a black polycoat finish, and a decocker in place of a manual safety. The decocker lets you lower the hammer on a loaded chamber without pulling the trigger — that’s the factory configuration on the standard P-01 as well. The only meaningful difference from the version sold in most other states is the magazine capacity. Dealers can’t swap in higher-capacity magazines, change parts, or add accessories that alter the certified configuration, because the gun has to match the model that passed DOJ testing.

What You Need Before You Walk In

Firearm Safety Certificate

No dealer will start a sale without a valid Firearm Safety Certificate. It’s a 30-question multiple-choice and true/false test covering safe handling, storage rules, and basic firearms law. You need 23 correct to pass. The fee is $25, DOJ-certified instructors administer it (usually at gun shops), and the certificate is good for five years.4California Department of Justice – Office of the Attorney General. Firearm Safety Certificate Program FAQs You can take it the same day you buy if the dealer offers it, but arriving with a current certificate shortens the visit.

Identification

Bring a valid, non-expired California driver’s license or California ID card issued by the DMV.5State of California – Department of Justice – Office of the Attorney General. Frequently Asked Questions

If your license is marked “Federal Limits Apply” rather than REAL ID compliant, the dealer may require a supplemental document showing you’re legally present in the United States. A valid U.S. passport or passport card, certified U.S. birth certificate, Certificate of Naturalization, or valid Permanent Resident Card will satisfy that requirement, among other acceptable documents.7California Department of Justice. Consumer Alert Regarding Federal Limits Apply Driver Licenses Bring one if it applies to you.

Proof of Residency

For a handgun purchase, California wants a second document proving you live at the address on your ID. Acceptable options:

  • A utility bill dated within the last three months showing your name and residential address. Physical-service accounts count (water, gas, electric, cable); mobile phone bills do not.
  • A signed, dated residential lease or rental agreement in your name.
  • A property deed or certificate of title showing you own your current residence.
  • A current, non-expired government-issued license or permit (a fishing or hunting license works) that shows your name and address.8California Department of Justice. Evidence of Residency Documentation Regulations

The document has to show your name and a residential address matching either your ID or the address you declare on the Dealer’s Record of Sale form. Bring the physical paper or a printed copy; a photo on your phone generally won’t satisfy the dealer.

DROS, Fees, and the Waiting Period

Once the dealer has verified your FSC, ID, and residency proof, they submit your information to the DOJ electronically through the Dealer’s Record of Sale system. That triggers your background check against criminal history, restraining order, and mental health databases. The total state fee bundled into the DROS transaction is $37.19 — a $31.19 DROS fee, a $1.00 Firearms Safety Act fee, and a $5.00 Safety and Enforcement fee.5State of California – Department of Justice – Office of the Attorney General. Frequently Asked Questions

Penal Code 26815 forbids the dealer from delivering any firearm within 10 days of the DROS submission.9California Legislative Information. California Code PEN 26815 – Delivery of Firearms If the application needs correction, the 10-day clock restarts from the correction date.

You then have a limited pickup window. Under Penal Code 26835, if you don’t take possession within 30 days of the DROS submission, the dealer must cancel the transaction, and you’d have to start over and pay the fees again.6State of California – Department of Justice – Office of the Attorney General. Frequently Asked Questions So the window opens on day 11 and closes on day 30. Mark your calendar.

At Pickup: The Safe Handling Demonstration and Lock

California won’t let you leave with the pistol until you prove you can handle it safely. Under Penal Code sections 26850 through 26860, the dealer watches you perform a safe handling demonstration on the actual firearm you’re buying. For a semiautomatic like the P-01, that means loading a dummy round into a magazine, chambering it, verifying the chamber, clearing the round, and applying the safety device, all while keeping proper muzzle and trigger discipline.10New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. Safe Handling Demonstration Steps for Handguns with Alternative Designs The dealer provides inert dummy rounds. If you fail, the gun stays behind the counter.

Every firearm also has to leave the shop with a DOJ-approved safety device, typically a cable or trigger lock. The dealer will sell you one, or you can bring your own approved device purchased in the last 30 days with the receipt. If you already own a qualifying gun safe, you can sign an affidavit under penalty of perjury to that effect and skip the lock purchase.11State of California – Department of Justice – Office of the Attorney General. The One-in-30 Rule

Penal Code 27535 limits you to one firearm purchase application per 30-day period, and it applies to all firearms, not just handguns. The clock starts when the DROS is submitted, not when you pick up.12California Legislative Information. California Code Penal Code 27535 – Limitation on Firearm Applications One exemption worth knowing: if you hold both a federal Collector of Curios and Relics license (FFL Type 03) and a current California Certificate of Eligibility, the limit doesn’t apply to you.

The statute itself has a built-in sunset. It becomes inoperative on April 1, 2026, and is formally repealed on January 1, 2027.12California Legislative Information. California Code Penal Code 27535 – Limitation on Firearm Applications If you’re reading this after April 1, 2026, the restriction no longer applies unless the legislature has passed a replacement.

What It Actually Costs

Sticker price is only part of it. California stacks several mandatory charges on top of the retail price. On a CZ P-01 priced around $630 (dealer pricing varies), expect roughly:

  • DROS and bundled state fees: $37.19.5State of California – Department of Justice – Office of the Attorney General. Frequently Asked Questions
  • Firearm Safety Certificate: $25 if you don’t already hold a current one.4California Department of Justice – Office of the Attorney General. Firearm Safety Certificate Program FAQs
  • California firearms excise tax: 11% of retail, imposed under Revenue and Taxation Code section 36011.13California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. California Firearm Excise Tax Law – Section 36011
  • State and local sales tax: generally 7.25% to 10.75% depending on county.
  • Firearm safety device: typically $10 to $20 for a cable lock, unless you use the gun safe affidavit.

On a $630 pistol, the 11% excise tax alone adds about $69. Add sales tax, DROS, and the FSC fee, and the out-the-door number lands somewhere between $740 and $800 depending on your county. The excise tax took effect July 1, 2024, and applies to every firearm and ammunition sale in the state.

If It’s Off the Roster: Private Party Transfer

If the CZ P-01 has dropped from the roster, or if you want a variant that was never on it (different sights, a different finish), the private party transfer route is open. Penal Code 32110 exempts private party transfers from the roster requirement, so an off-roster handgun can legally change hands between two California residents as long as the transfer runs through a licensed dealer.14California Legislative Information. California Code Penal Code 32110

Both buyer and seller meet at the dealer, who runs the transaction through DROS with the same background check and the same 10-day wait. You still need a valid FSC, proper ID, and proof of residency, and the fees still apply. Expect to pay a California premium: a P-01 that retails around $630 new elsewhere can run $900 or more through a private party transfer here, because the supply is limited to what’s already in-state.

One Modification to Avoid

Once the pistol is yours, you have broad latitude on grips, sights, and internal trigger work. One modification will reclassify your pistol as an assault weapon under California law: a threaded barrel. Penal Code 30515 treats any semiautomatic pistol with a detachable magazine and a threaded barrel as an assault weapon.15California Legislative Information. California Code PEN 30515 – Assault Weapons The P-01 uses a detachable magazine, so a threaded barrel crosses the line. Possession of an unregistered assault weapon is a felony. Don’t do it.
