Deborah Benefiel Charged in Indianapolis Road Rage Shooting

Deborah Benefiel, a 23-year-old Indianapolis woman, is charged with murder and criminal recklessness in the October 17, 2025 road rage shooting that killed 21-year-old Kentrell Settles on the city’s northwest side. Police say Settles honked at Benefiel after she failed to move when a traffic light turned green, and she followed his car and fired a single shot through the rear window, striking him in the chest. She was arrested the same day and is being held without bond in the Marion County Jail.¹

What Happened at 38th and Georgetown

Shortly before 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 17, 2025, Settles and his girlfriend were stopped behind Benefiel’s green Ford SUV at a red light near West 38th Street and Georgetown Road. When the light turned green, Benefiel did not move. Settles honked, drove around her, and continued on.¹

Benefiel then followed him. Settles’ girlfriend told investigators that Benefiel was “yelling, screaming, and throwing her hands around” inside her SUV during the pursuit. As Settles tried to turn into Georgetown Plaza, Benefiel fired one round into his 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. The bullet entered through the rear passenger-side window and tore through his lung and heart, according to court documents.²

Settles’ girlfriend climbed into his lap and drove the car to the 3600 block of Donald Avenue, where Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers found him bleeding in the driver’s seat.³ He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead at 2:43 p.m.¹

How Police Identified Benefiel

Detectives tracked the green Ford SUV using automatic license plate readers and area surveillance video. The vehicle stood out for its bumper stickers, including what investigators described as a “cartoon dumpster fire” decal. Undercover officers later watched Benefiel peel those stickers off her SUV and throw them away.²

Witnesses picked Benefiel out of a photo lineup as the shooter. Officers executed a search warrant at her apartment on East Washington Street and recovered a .40-caliber Glock handgun from a purse inside. Benefiel confirmed the gun was in the apartment.¹ Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears noted it was Benefiel’s first arrest and her first criminal charge of any kind.⁴

The Charges and What She Faces

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office charged Benefiel with murder and criminal recklessness, a Level 5 felony.⁵ A murder conviction under Indiana law carries a potential sentence of 45 to 65 years in prison.⁴

At her initial court appearance, a judge ordered her held without bond. Her next court hearing was scheduled for November 4, 2025.⁶

Who Kentrell Settles Was

Kentrell M. Settles, known to friends and family as “Trell,” was born on January 15, 2004. Funeral services were held on November 5, 2025, at Lavenia & Summers Home for Funerals in Indianapolis.⁷

His father, Kenneth Murff, spoke publicly about the loss. “He’s loved by so many people and so many people are going to miss him and a precious life was taken for no reason,” Murff told Fox 59. “He didn’t do anything wrong and for it to still happen, it troubles you as a father. To make a rash decision like that doesn’t make sense and it ruins more than your life, it ruins other people’s lives.”⁸

Road Rage Shootings in Indiana

The killing fits a wider pattern. Indiana ranks third in the nation for fatal crashes involving road rage, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data, and road rage was a factor in 7.3% of the state’s fatal crashes between 2017 and 2021, accounting for 486 deaths. Reported incidents more than doubled over that period, rising from 51 in 2017 to 126 in 2021.⁹

Indiana State Police reported 56 shootings on roadways in 2023, along with more than 300 incidents in which a driver displayed or pointed a gun at another motorist.⁹ Officers interviewed for a separate analysis of gun violence in Indianapolis pointed to the state’s permitless carry laws as a contributing factor, saying that when more drivers are armed, minor conflicts are more likely to escalate into shootings.¹⁰
