Delaware vehicle registration fees start at $40 per year for a standard passenger car, but the real cost at the counter is the 5.25% document fee charged when you first title the vehicle. On a $30,000 car, that document fee alone comes to $1,575. Electric and hybrid owners also owe an annual surcharge that took effect October 1, 2025. The sections below break down what you pay, what you bring, and who pays less.
Fees by Vehicle Type
Delaware sets registration fees by statute based on vehicle class and weight.1Justia. Delaware Code Title 21 Chapter 21 Subchapter IV Section 2151 – Fee Schedule; Time of Payment
- Passenger vehicles: $40 per year.
- Motorcycles: $15 per year.
- Trucks and other motor vehicles 5,000 lbs or under: $40 per year, plus $18 per year for each additional 1,000 pounds over 5,000.2Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles. Division of Motor Vehicles – Fees
- Recreational vehicles and trailers 5,000 lbs or under: $40 per year, plus $6.40 per year for each additional 1,000 pounds over 5,000.
- Trailers 1,000 lbs or under: $15 per year. Between 1,001 and 2,000 pounds, add $5 per each additional 1,000 pounds. Trailers over 2,000 pounds use the standard truck rate.3Delaware Code Online. Delaware Code Title 21 – Registration of Vehicles
The weight math matters for commercial operators. A 10,000-pound truck pays $40 for the first 5,000 pounds plus $18 for each of the next five 1,000-pound increments, totaling $130 per year. Gross load weight includes the chassis, body, equipment, and the maximum load the vehicle is designed to carry.
The Document Fee at Titling
Delaware does not charge a traditional sales tax on vehicle purchases. In its place is a document fee charged when you title a vehicle, and for most buyers it dwarfs the registration fee itself. As of October 1, 2025, the document fee is 5.25% of the purchase price or the NADA book value, whichever is greater.4State of Delaware News. DMV Fees Increase in October 2025 The minimum is $8.2Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles. Division of Motor Vehicles – Fees Mobile homes have a reduced rate of 3.75%.
On a $30,000 vehicle, that works out to $1,575 due at titling. New residents coming from lower-tax states are often caught off guard by this one.
Electric, Hybrid, and Alternative Fuel Surcharges
Beginning October 1, 2025, Delaware adds an annual surcharge on alternative fuel vehicles on top of the standard registration fee. For vehicles under 6,000 pounds, which covers most passenger cars:5Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles. Alternative Fuel Vehicle Registration Fee
- Fully electric or fuel cell: $110 per year
- Plug-in hybrid: $85 per year
- Non-plug-in hybrid: $60 per year
- Hydrogen, natural gas, or propane: $110 per year
- Electric motorcycle: $15 per year
Surcharges climb steeply with weight. A fully electric vehicle over 26,001 pounds pays $900 per year in surcharges alone. Mopeds are exempt from the EV surcharge. Combined with the base $40 registration, the owner of a standard electric passenger car now pays $150 per year.
Vanity and Specialty Plates
