The Delta County sales tax rate in Colorado starts at a combined 6.5 percent in unincorporated areas and rises as high as 9.5 percent inside certain city limits. That 6.5 percent floor combines the state tax, the county tax, and two voter-approved special district taxes that apply countywide. Where you add a municipal tax on top depends on which town or city you’re shopping in.
How the 6.5 Percent Base Is Built
Every taxable purchase anywhere in Delta County carries four stacked taxes before any city tax enters the picture:
- Colorado state sales tax: 2.9 percent, collected on retail sales of tangible personal property statewide.1Department of Revenue – Colorado Taxes. Sales Tax Rate Changes
- Delta County tax: 2 percent, funding the General Fund, Road and Bridge, and Human Services.
- Delta County Memorial Hospital District tax: 0.8 percent, approved by voters in May 2022 and in effect since July 2022.2Delta Health. Delta Health Sales Tax Initiative Passes
- Public Safety Improvement District tax: 0.8 percent, allocated among law enforcement agencies in the county.3Delta County. 2024 Audited Financial Statements
Those four together produce the 6.5 percent base. Some older rate lookups quote 4.9 percent for the county, but that number predates the two special district taxes and no longer reflects what you actually pay at the register.
What You Pay Inside Each Town or City
Cities and towns in Delta County add their own sales tax on top of the 6.5 percent base. The combined rate therefore depends on where the sale takes place.
In the City of Delta, the municipal rate is 3 percent, bringing the total combined rate to 9.5 percent.4City of Delta. Sales Tax Information Paonia also adds 3 percent, for the same 9.5 percent combined total. Crawford and Hotchkiss each add 2 percent, producing a combined rate of roughly 8.5 percent in those towns.
The City of Delta is a home rule municipality, which means it collects and administers its own sales and use tax rather than letting the state handle it.4City of Delta. Sales Tax Information For shoppers that distinction is invisible. For a business selling inside city limits it matters, because home rule cities require their own tax filings on top of the state return. Statutory towns like Crawford and Hotchkiss have their local tax collected through the Colorado Department of Revenue alongside the state tax.
Because the rate shifts at municipal boundaries, the same item can carry a different total tax depending on which side of a city line you buy it on. If you need the exact rate for a specific address, the Colorado Department of Revenue publishes a rate lookup tool that returns the combined rate by location.1Department of Revenue – Colorado Taxes. What’s Taxable and What’s Exempt
Most tangible personal property is taxed at the full combined rate wherever you buy it. Electronics, clothing, furniture, and building materials all fall into that category. Colorado does carve out several exemptions that affect what you actually pay on everyday essentials.
Prescription drugs and certain medical items are exempt from state sales tax. The exemption reaches items dispensed with a prescription, including insulin, prosthetic devices, hearing aids, durable medical equipment, and corrective eyeglasses.5Colorado Department of Revenue. Medical and Dental Supplies and Equipment Over-the-counter medications that don’t require a prescription are generally taxable.
Food purchased for home consumption is exempt from the 2.9 percent state sales tax.6Colorado General Assembly. Food for Home Consumption and Retirement Communities Exemptions Home rule cities that run their own tax system are not obligated to follow the state exemption, so grocery items may still carry local tax depending on where you shop. Prepared food and restaurant meals are taxable everywhere.
Delta County also imposes a 2 percent use tax on motor vehicles and building materials bought outside the county and brought in for local use. The use tax prevents residents from avoiding local tax by making large purchases in a lower-tax jurisdiction. You’ll usually encounter it when registering a vehicle or pulling a building permit.
Finding the Rate for a Specific Purchase
If you’re trying to confirm the rate for a particular transaction, the question to answer first is whether the sale happens inside a municipal boundary. Unincorporated county addresses pay the 6.5 percent base. A City of Delta or Paonia address pays 9.5 percent. Crawford or Hotchkiss addresses pay about 8.5 percent. For any address, the state’s rate lookup returns the exact combined figure, including any special districts that touch the location.1Department of Revenue – Colorado Taxes. Sales Tax Rate Changes
