Why the State Leans So Heavily Democratic
Massachusetts has gone Democratic in every presidential election since 1928 except four: for Dwight Eisenhower in 1952 and 1956, and for Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984.8270toWin. Massachusetts Presidential Voting History In 1972, it was the only state in the country to vote for George McGovern over Richard Nixon.
The pattern tracks closely with the state’s demographic profile. A composite ranking built on education levels, racial diversity, and urbanization, three variables that together explained roughly 80% of state-level voting in recent presidential elections, places Massachusetts among the most Democratic-friendly states in the country.14University of Virginia Center for Politics. Ranking the States Demographically The state has one of the highest shares of college-educated residents in the nation, a heavily urbanized population centered on Boston, and a dense concentration of universities.
Party registration tells a related story. As of February 2025, only about 423,000 of the state’s five million registered voters were enrolled as Republicans, roughly 8.4% of the electorate. About 1,299,000 were enrolled Democrats, and about 3,254,000, nearly 65%, were unenrolled.15Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Registered Voter Enrollment
What Happened to the Electoral Votes

That provision only takes effect once participating states control at least 270 electoral votes, and the compact stood at 222 as of 2026, still short of the trigger.17National Conference of State Legislatures.
