Yes, motorcycles do pay tolls in California, but only on toll roads and toll bridges, where they are classified as two-axle vehicles and charged the same rate as a car. On most express lanes (the HOV-style toll lanes running alongside regular freeway traffic), motorcycles ride free. The catch is that “free” sometimes still requires a transponder, and getting the setup wrong can leave you with a violation notice instead of a free trip.
Toll Roads and Bridges: Full Price
There is no motorcycle discount on dedicated toll roads or toll bridges. The Orange County Toll Roads (State Routes 73, 133, 241, and 261) charge motorcycles the same rates as any other two-axle vehicle, with the amount varying by time of day and whether you have a FasTrak account.1The Toll Roads. Rate Card: Two-axle Vehicles and Motorcycles
The seven state-owned Bay Area bridges (Antioch, Benicia-Martinez, Carquinez, Dumbarton, San Francisco-Oakland Bay, Richmond-San Rafael, and San Mateo-Hayward) charge two-axle vehicles $8.50 as of January 1, 2026.2Metropolitan Transportation Commission. 2026 Toll Increase and High-Occupancy Vehicle HOV Policy Updates The Golden Gate Bridge charges motorcycles $9.75 with FasTrak or $10.00 through a license plate account or one-time payment.3Golden Gate Bridge. In San Diego, the SR 125 South Bay Expressway is a toll road rather than an express lane, so every vehicle pays regardless of occupancy or type.4SANDAG. SANDAG FasTrak Information
Express Lanes: Usually Free, Sometimes With Strings
California law lets solo motorcyclists use high-occupancy vehicle lanes without meeting the passenger requirement,5California Legislative Information. California Code VEH 21655.5 – High-Occupancy Vehicle Lanes and that privilege extends to most high-occupancy toll (HOT) lanes, where motorcycles travel toll-free.6California Highway Patrol. Bay Area Express Lanes
On the SR 237, I-80, I-880, US 101, and US 101/SR 85 Express Lanes, motorcycles travel free but must carry a FasTrak Flex transponder set to the “3+” position.7FasTrak. Carpooling Without that setting, the system reads you as a solo driver in a car and charges the full toll.
405 Express Lanes
The 405 Express Lanes let motorcycles ride free at all times, but a transponder is mandatory to enter.8405 Express Lanes. Will Motorcycles Be Allowed to Drive for Free on the 405 Express Lanes
Los Angeles Metro ExpressLanes
The I-10 and I-110 Metro ExpressLanes are free for motorcycles and rely on license plate recognition, so riders with standard-issue California motorcycle plates can enter without a transponder. If you run a personalized or specialty plate, verify your toll status, because the plate-reading system may not always recognize non-standard formats.
San Diego Express Lanes
The I-15 Express Lanes are free for motorcycles, with no FasTrak account required. Just remember that SR 125 nearby is a toll road, not an express lane, and still charges every vehicle.4SANDAG. SANDAG FasTrak Information
How to Pay
California’s toll facilities are entirely electronic. No cash booths exist at any of them, so decide your payment method before you ride.
A FasTrak account is the cheapest option. You load a prepaid balance, and tolls deduct automatically as you pass through. FasTrak users pay less than license-plate or invoice payers at most facilities. Riders who use express lanes should specifically get a FasTrak Flex transponder, which has a three-position switch for indicating occupants; setting it correctly is what tells the system your motorcycle qualifies for free travel.
If you don’t have a FasTrak account, you can make a one-time payment online within five days before or five days after using a toll facility.9The Toll Roads. Ways to Pay Tolls Miss that window and you’ll get a toll invoice at a higher rate, or a violation notice with penalties on top. Riders passing through on a trip often forget this and discover the problem weeks later.
Some agencies also offer a license plate account that photographs your plate and bills you without any transponder, usually at a slightly higher rate than FasTrak.
Mounting a Transponder on a Bike
Standard FasTrak transponders can sit in a jacket pocket, tank bag, or any secure spot. The system reads them through clothing and fabric.10The Toll Roads. I Drive a Motorcycle Do I Have to Pay a Toll Can I Use a Transponder Some agencies offer a motorcycle-specific sticker transponder that affixes permanently to the headlamp. The sticker must sit at least two inches from any metal surface, and the adhesive is one-use; once applied, repositioning it breaks the internal antenna.11The Toll Roads. How to Install – Motorcycle Whichever type you use, register your motorcycle’s license plate to your FasTrak account so the system can match the vehicle if the transponder fails to read.
Veteran Exemption Boundary
California exempts certain veterans from tolls on the Golden Gate Bridge and the seven state-owned Bay Area bridges when the vehicle is registered to the veteran and displays a Congressional Medal of Honor, Disabled Veteran, Legion of Valor, Pearl Harbor Survivor, Ex-Prisoner of War, or Purple Heart plate.12Bay Area FasTrak. If You Don’t Pay
Riding through a toll point without paying triggers a notice of toll evasion violation mailed to the registered owner. The penalty structure depends on the facility.
- Toll bridges: The initial penalty tops out at $25. Pay the toll within 15 days of the notice and you owe only the original toll with no penalty. A delinquent notice can add up to another $25, bringing the maximum to $50 per violation.14California Legislative Information. California Code VEH 40258 – Procedure on Toll Evasion Violations
- Toll roads and express lanes: The initial penalty can reach $60, with cumulative penalties capped at $100 per violation.14California Legislative Information. California Code VEH 40258 – Procedure on Toll Evasion Violations
If you’ve never had a violation with that particular toll agency, you can get the penalty waived entirely by contacting customer service within 21 days, opening an account, and paying the original toll.15California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 40258 This first-violation waiver is worth knowing about if you misread a lane or forgot a one-time payment deadline.
Ignore the notices entirely and the unpaid amount gets reported to the California DMV, which places a hold on your motorcycle’s registration. Renewal is blocked until every outstanding toll and penalty is cleared,16California Department of Motor Vehicles. Vehicle Industry Registration Procedures Manual 10.110 Parking and Toll Violations on Record and the hold also prevents transferring ownership.17California Department of Motor Vehicles. Contesting a Violation
Motorcycle plates are smaller and sit at a different angle than car plates, and toll cameras misread them more often than you’d expect. If a violation notice looks wrong, you have 21 days from the date it was mailed to contest it in writing. Complete the “Contest of Notice” section on the notice and include a written explanation.18The Toll Roads. How Can I Dispute a Violation
The agency investigates and mails you the results. If you disagree, you have 15 days from that mailing to deposit the penalty amount and request a formal administrative review, which the agency must hold within 90 days. If that still doesn’t resolve things, you can appeal to the local court.18The Toll Roads. How Can I Dispute a Violation Don’t let a disputed notice sit. The contest window is short, and once it closes your options shrink fast.
