In Ohio, your tags expire on the last day of your birth month in the year printed on your validation sticker. So if you were born on March 15, your registration is good through March 31 of its expiration year, not the 15th. This birthday-based system has been Ohio’s standard since 2004 and covers almost every individually owned passenger vehicle in the state. A handful of situations shift the date, which is worth knowing before you assume your birthday controls the deadline.1Ohio Legislative Service Commission. How to Find Your Exact Expiration Date
Look at the validation sticker on your rear license plate. It shows the month and year your registration ends. Your paper registration card carries the same information. If both are missing, you can look up the date on the Ohio BMV’s online portal at OPLATES.com using your plate number.2Ohio BMV. Vehicle Registration Renewal
When the Birthday Rule Doesn’t Control
Jointly Owned Vehicles
If a vehicle has more than one owner, the expiration tracks the birthday of the person listed first on the title. Ohio also lets owners who share an address pick any one owner’s birthday to govern every vehicle at that address, which is useful if you’d rather have all household vehicles renewing in the same month.1Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Business and Commercial Vehicles
Company-owned vehicles don’t follow anyone’s birthday. Commercial trucks, trailers, and semitrailers get a registration month assigned from the last two digits of the business’s federal tax ID (or Social Security number if there is no tax ID). The registration still expires on the last day of that assigned month.3Cornell Law Institute. No Grace Period After Expiration
Ohio does not offer a formal grace period. The day after your tags lapse, you can be cited. Driving with expired registration is a strict liability minor misdemeanor under Ohio Revised Code 4503.21, meaning it doesn’t matter whether you knew or whether your renewal notice ever arrived. Fines and court costs for an expired-plate ticket typically land around $190 combined, though the exact amount depends on the court.4Ohio Legislative Service Commission. If you let the registration sit expired for more than 30 days before renewing, the BMV adds a $10 late fee to your normal renewal cost.5Ohio BMV. Documents and Fees
When You Can Renew
You can renew up to 90 days before your expiration date, and the BMV mails a renewal notice at least 45 days out. Three methods are available: online at OPLATES.com (you’ll need your plate number and the last four digits of your VIN), by mail to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles at P.O. Box 16521, Columbus, Ohio 43216-6521, or in person at any deputy registrar office. Ohio also offers multi-year registration of two to five years on passenger vehicles if you’d rather pay once and skip several renewal cycles.2Ohio BMV. Vehicle Registration Renewal6Ohio BMV. E-Check Can Block Renewal in Seven Counties
If your vehicle is registered in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, or Summit County, you need a passing E-Check emissions certificate before the BMV will complete your renewal. Your tags still expire on your birth month’s last day, but you can’t finish the paperwork without the certificate, so don’t wait until the final week.7Ohio EPA. E-Check
Not every vehicle in those counties needs testing. As of 2026, gas and diesel vehicles are exempt during their first six model years, non-plug-in hybrids during their first seven, and anything older than 26 model years. For the 2026 cycle, that puts gas and diesel testing at model year 2020 and newer, and non-plug-in hybrids at model year 2019 and newer.7Ohio EPA. E-Check
If You Just Moved to Ohio
New residents have 30 days from establishing residency to transfer an out-of-state title and get Ohio plates. Once you register, the normal rule takes over: your new Ohio tags will expire at the end of your birth month going forward.8Ohio BMV. New Ohio Residents1Ohio Legislative Service Commission.
