Do You Need an ID to Get a Fishing License in California?

To buy a California sport fishing license, you need one government-issued ID: a state driver’s license or ID card, a passport, a military ID, a birth certificate, a foreign government photo ID, or a permanent resident card. If you’ve bought a California fishing or hunting license before, your Get Outdoors (GO) ID number works in place of any of those.1California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Acceptable Forms of ID

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) will issue a sport fishing license on any one of the following:1California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Identification Requirement

  • State driver’s license or ID card
  • Passport
  • Military ID
  • Birth certificate
  • Foreign government-issued photo ID
  • Permanent resident card (Green Card)
  • An existing GO ID number

Notice the list isn’t limited to photo ID. A birth certificate is accepted even though it carries no photo, which matters if you don’t drive and don’t have a passport. A foreign government photo ID is also accepted, so you don’t need a US document to buy a license.

The GO ID Shortcut

Your GO ID is the fastest way to identify yourself at the counter or online. The CDFW stores customer records in its Automated License Data System, and the GO ID pulls up your existing profile so you aren’t re-entering everything.3California Department of Fish and Wildlife. What You’ll Give Along With the ID

Showing ID is only part of the intake. You’ll also provide your name, mailing address, date of birth, height, weight, and eye color. The address you give matters more than it might seem, because it’s what determines whether you pay the resident or non-resident fee.

How Your ID Establishes Residency

California defines a resident as someone who has lived continuously in the state for at least six months immediately before applying. Active-duty military personnel and Job Corps enrollees count as residents regardless of how long they’ve been in California.4California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Other documents with a current California address can also work.

If you recently moved and haven’t hit the six-month mark, you’ll pay the non-resident rate until you can show continuous residency. The gap is large: in 2026, a resident annual license is $64.54 and a non-resident annual is $174.14.5California Department of Fish and Wildlife. 2026 Sport Fishing Items and Fees Choosing which ID to present isn’t just a formality when one shows a California address and another doesn’t.

Where You’ll Show the ID

You can present your ID three ways. Online, through the CDFW’s license portal, you enter your ID number along with your personal information and pay by debit or credit card; after checkout you can print a temporary license while the physical card comes by mail.6California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Online License Sales and Services In person, bring the physical document to any authorized license agent (tackle shops, sporting goods stores) or a CDFW License Sales Office. By phone, the CDFW’s authorized sales agent can also take your purchase.

Reduced-Fee Licenses Need Extra Documentation

If you’re applying for a reduced-fee license as a disabled veteran, standard ID isn’t enough on its own: you’ll also need to submit a copy of your VA Benefit Summary Letter showing an honorable discharge and a service-connected disability rating of 50% or higher. Once the CDFW updates your customer record, you can buy the reduced-fee license anywhere licenses are sold. Low-income residents 65 or older who receive SSI or CAPI benefits qualify for a reduced-fee license too, but that one is sold only at CDFW License Sales Offices, where you’ll need to bring proof of your SSI or CAPI enrollment.4California Department of Fish and Wildlife. If You’re Buying for Someone Under 16

Children under 16 don’t need a license to fish in California, so there’s no ID to produce for them.2California Legislative Information. California Fish and Game Code 7145 All other fishing regulations still apply, including any required species-specific report cards.
