Do You Need to Renew Your CCW in Ohio? Rules, Fees, Process

You do not need to renew your CCW in Ohio to keep carrying concealed. Since June 13, 2022, Ohio has been a permitless carry state, so any adult 21 or older who can legally possess a firearm may carry it concealed without a license.1Ohio Legislature. Senate Bill 215 – 134th General Assembly Renewing your Concealed Handgun License (CHL) is optional. For most license holders, it is still worth doing, because the license unlocks protections that permitless carry alone does not.

Reasons to Renew Even Though Ohio Is Permitless Carry

Three practical benefits survive the move to permitless carry, and each one matters in a situation you may not see coming.

The federal school zone law. Federal law bars possessing a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school unless you hold a state-issued license that required a law enforcement background check before it was issued. A CHL satisfies that requirement. Carrying without a license near a school can expose you to a federal felony even though Ohio’s own school-zone statute carves out an exception for CHL holders.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 USC 922 – Unlawful Acts

Reciprocity when you travel. Many states honor Ohio’s CHL through agreements kept by the Ohio Attorney General. Without a license, you have no document for another state to recognize, and carrying concealed across the state line can be a crime.3Office of the Ohio Attorney General. Concealed Carry Reciprocity Agreements Check the current list before any trip, since states add and drop agreements. In a reciprocity state, you follow that state’s carry rules, not Ohio’s.

Faster firearm purchases. A valid CHL can shorten the federal background check at a dealer, because you have already cleared an in-depth screening.

If you never leave Ohio and never pass near a school, you can carry legally without renewing. For most people, the cost and time of renewal buy real coverage.

When Your License Expires and How Long You Have

Who Still Qualifies

Renewal applicants must meet the same eligibility rules as new applicants, with one meaningful break: no new competency certificate is required. The statute explicitly waives the training requirement for renewals.4Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Code 2923.125 – Application and Licensing Process You still must be:

  • A legal U.S. resident who has lived in Ohio for at least 45 days.
  • At least 21 years old.
  • Free of disqualifying convictions, including felonies, drug trafficking offenses, misdemeanor crimes of violence, and negligent assault.
  • Not subject to any civil or temporary protection order from any state.
  • Not under a judicial finding of mental incompetence or an involuntary commitment.

Active duty service members in the military, Peace Corps, or foreign service are exempt from the licensing requirement during service and for six months afterward, provided they held a valid CHL when their service began. Spouses and dependents who relocated for the assignment get the same exemption.4Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Code 2923.125 – Application and Licensing Process

How to Renew

You apply in person at the sheriff’s office in your county of residence or an adjacent county. Most offices require an appointment and rarely accept walk-ins.7Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. Concealed Carry Permit

Bring the following to your appointment:

  • A completed renewal application on a current form from the sheriff or the Ohio Attorney General’s website. Photocopies of old applications are not accepted.6Office of the Ohio Attorney General. Concealed Carry Laws and License Application
  • Your current or expired CHL.
  • A valid Ohio driver’s license or state ID. If your address does not match, bring proof of residency such as a utility bill or bank statement.
  • Your certification on the application that you have reread the firearms safety pamphlet published by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission.4Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Code 2923.125 – Application and Licensing Process
  • A 2-by-2-inch passport-style color photo, if your sheriff’s office requires one in advance. Some offices take the photo on site for an added fee, typically around $15.

Answer every question on the application honestly. False statements are a separate offense.

Fees

The renewal fee is nonrefundable and depends on your length of Ohio residency:

  • $50 if you have lived in Ohio for five years or more.
  • $60 if you have lived in Ohio for less than five years.
  • Waived for active or reserve members of the U.S. armed forces and for anyone retired from or honorably discharged from military service.8Delaware County Sheriff’s Office. Concealed Carry Fees and Signs

Payment options vary. Cash and money orders are accepted almost everywhere; some offices take cards but may add a processing fee. Call the sheriff’s office before you go.

Background Check and Processing Window

At the appointment, the sheriff’s office takes your electronic fingerprints through the WebCheck system and submits them to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and, where applicable, the FBI. A check through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System is also run.9Lake County, Ohio. Concealed Carry Registration, Fingerprinting, Background Checks

The sheriff has up to 45 days to process a renewal.9Lake County, Ohio. Concealed Carry Registration, Fingerprinting, Background Checks Many offices finish sooner, but plan for the full window if you are close to your expiration date. If you filed during the 30-day grace period, your old license still covers you until the new one arrives.

If Your Renewal Is Denied

A denial must come with written notice stating the specific reason. The usual causes are criminal record hits the applicant did not expect: old charges, out-of-state convictions, or records that were supposed to be sealed but still show up.

You can appeal the denial in the court of common pleas in the county where you applied. If the problem is an inaccurate BCI record, you can also dispute the record directly with BCI and correct it before reapplying.4Ohio Legislative Service Commission.
